STEWARDSHIP
What is Christian Stewardship?
Christian Stewardship is about becoming good
caretakers of all that God has given us. God has
given each of us special and unique gifts. And
through Holy Scripture He teaches us all that we
have is a loan. He lends everything to us, and
reminds us that one day He will ask us to give a
detailed accounting of what we have done with
the gifts He has given us.
…caring for the needs of others.
THE FAITHFUL FOUND A CHURCH AT THE BAYSHORE
From the vision of our founders in the early 1970s whose faith was strong and vibrant, we have a thriving com-
munity here in the Bayshore area of Central New Jersey. Fifty families worked, saved, and contributed to build
our Church. We broke ground in 1986 and completed the first phase of our Building Program on December 18,
1988 with Door Opening ceremonies and the first Divine Liturgy by His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos and
Reverend Father George H. Dounelis in our new Church. Our Church was consecrated in 2007.
Today, over 400 families humbly pray and serve our growing parish and fellow parishioners, along with the
Monmouth County community, in our expanded complex with a community center/gymnasium and classrooms
for Sunday School, Greek Language School, and more. This all began in 1973 with the founding of the
Bayshore American Hellenic Association, a dedicated group of people organized to share their common beliefs,
values, language, and customs. With 88 signatures to apply to the Archdiocese to begin a Church, His Emi-
nence Archbishop Iakovos issued a temporary charter and ratified the Interim Parish Council on July 16, 1976.
Our Stewardship Program began in 2001 and is a fair-share program. Please complete a form and be among
those who are Stewards of Kimisis!

Tom Protentis, President
2015 Parish Council of Kimisis Tis Theotokou
Dear Stewards of Kimisis,
Welcome back! A new church year has begun and our various organizations are now in full swing. I
would like to take a moment to thank all of you that tirelessly give of your time and talents to help our
various organizations grow and thrive. Stewardship has three components, the first we are all aware of,
treasure, but time and talent are equally as important. Without time and talent we have no ministries or
organizations available to our stewards; no GOYA, no Greek School, no Philoptochos, no scouting pro-
grams. It is related to time and talent that I write this letter. We are coming up on our year-end General
Assembly meeting. This is the most important meeting of the year because it is at this meeting that we
discuss and approve our annual budget for 2016 and also nominate stewards to run for the Parish Coun-
cil, Election Committee and Audit Committee. No one needs any special talents to serve on any of these
committees, just a desire to help our beloved church and to see her continue to grow. We are all just care
-takers of the work begun almost 40 years ago by a group of people with the foresight to create an ortho-
dox gem at the Jersey Shore. Let’s continue their wonderful work in order to make sure that our chil-
dren’s children have a place to call their spiritual home. Is it hard work? At times yes, but it is fulfilling
work that will leave you with an amazing feeling that is hard to duplicate because it is done out of love,
not for yourself, but for others.
If anyone has an interest in serving our community as a Parish Council member, an Audit Committee
Member or an Election Committee member please let Fr. George, any member of the Parish Council or
Zaharoula know.
Thank you and warmest regards,
Tom Protentis

One form of Stewardship is assisting with Sunday Liturgical Services. As we look forward to beginning our Ecclesi-
astical Year, our choir has been practicing new Byzantine music. It is beautiful and the voices of our sopranos, altos,
tenors, and bass singers have new harmonies. However, more voices will make the music
sound all the more beautiful.
Join the Choir
If you can sing in tune, read Greek or English phonetics, and can commit to one night a
week for practice and Sunday arrivals by 9:45am, you will find great joy and fulfillment in joining the Kimisis Choir.
Please contact Marie Devino, Choir Director, for more information by email ([email protected]). Reminders and
cancellations are sent by text message, so please provide your cell phone number when contacting Marie. Marie's cell
is (848) 218-8568.
Enjoy our Choir
It's very important that we have another five to ten members in the Choir. It is up to the community to decide if we
are going to continue to have a Choir. If we do not have the necessary commitment of a core group of 10-15 volun-
teers, then we will need to seek other alternatives.
Choir members meet for practice on Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm in the Church Choir Loft. Please contact Ma-
rie 848-218-8568, if you are interested in serving Kimisis in this way.

Thank you to all who have signed up for Sun-
day School this year. We are lucky to have
some new teachers join our staff and we are
thrilled. We would also like to thank everyone
who participated in our first fundraiser that
helps us do events and buy supplies for our
classes.
Your support is greatly appreciated.

As our new ecclesiastic year is well under way, on behalf of the
executive board, we would like to welcome all our members and
hope you join us at our upcoming events. Our first very successful
Meet n Greet was held on October 4th. We met many new faces and
reconnected with many of our present and past sisters. We all had a
wonderful time chatting over food and mimosas. We had a total of
26 new members join! WELCOME! Our sisterhood has something
to offer women of all ages. Whether you are a working woman,
working at home woman with children, or retired, our organization
offers a way that each of you can participate.
There will be interesting meetings with guest speakers held the third
Thursday of each month. Join us in November when our own pa-
rishioner, Ruth Patras will be the guest speaker. The December
meeting will be held at a restaurant (TBD) to celebrate the holiday
season. If you cannot attend evening meetings, perhaps you would
like to join one of our many rewarding committees. Fundraising
committees i.e. Fashion Show, Family Bingo, Apokreatiko Glendi
are a few. A good way to meet, socialize and make lasting friend-
ships with other women while raising money for our philanthropic
endeavors.
Committee of members to visit the ill, infirmed, home bound and Senior Homes.
Stories for children with Cancer Committee.
Help collect food for our Food Pantry, in conjunction with our Girl Scouts for the Food Banks of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
Drive Committee: Members to help drive someone to and from meetings, Church etc. (this is flexible, with an understanding that volunteers are not always available).
Helping Hands Committee: volunteers to take someone to a doctor’s visit or prepare a meal for someone after surgery etc. (as with Drive Committee is flexible to volunteer availability)
Knitting and Crocheting baby blankets for 40 day blessings.
College Connection: keeping our youth informed and connected to our Kimisis Community.
These are some of our committees. You can see there is something for everyone! Give an hour, give more if you can. Your time is valu-able and limited. We appreciate as much or as little as you can spare. The satisfaction and value is priceless! In closing, the most asked question: “WHAT IS PHILOPTO-CHOS?” Philoptochos is an army of women whose collective drive, dedication and heart help those who need it most. Philoptochos is compassion; it is love; it is strength. Philoptochos is YOU. Be part of a philanthropic movement. Join today and make a differ-
ence. Learn, grow and create bonds that last a lifetime! Bring your
ideas and suggestions, we are always looking for more ways to ac-
complish our goals.

Kimisis Art Program (KAP)
Can you imagine walking through an art mu-
seum and not seeing any trees? No mountains or streams, sunrises or sunsets? No birds or horses? No boats on rough waves or relaxing landscapes? It’s impossible, because nature is everywhere in art – from the literal to the ab-stract inspiration provided by the textures, colors and sounds of the natural world.
This year’s curriculum is “ART IN NATURE”, where students ages 9 thru 16 will explore art and create art based on ob-serving nature. Some of the planned projects include acrylic painting inspired by Geor-gia O’Keefe, working with pressed flowers, colored pencil drawings of birds and butterflies, 3-D nature collages, learning about Claude Monet, just to name a few.
Our June Trip will be to Chanticleer Gardens. The garden is a study of textures and forms, where foliage trumps flowers, the gardeners lead the design, and even the drinking fountains are sculptural. It is a garden of pleasure and learn-ing.
It is my pleasure to instruct your children in the classic method of drawing and painting. I hope to integrate a fun-filled approach to learning creative arts. There is an artist in all of us just waiting to bloom! Anyone interested in obtaining additional information, please contact: Susan Englisis at 732 614-5588 or email: [email protected].
Be sure to check out our Facebook Page where you can find wonderful infor-mation about art and some “at home” projects! https://www.facebook.com/groups/131364249322/

THE PAJAMA PROGRAM Last year KAP participated in THE PAJAMA PROGRAM, founded in 2001, that provided over 3,000,000 new pajamas and new books to children in need nationwide. I am happy and proud to say that we joined them in col-lecting 100 PJ’s and books in 2014. By distributing new pajamas and new books to children in need, we are able to help provide children with a com-forting, nurturing bedtime and literacy support. Our Pajama Drive Kick - Off is:
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH Pajamas and books need to be new and unused, and the pajamas should be a complete set (top and bottom) or nightgown with a book. We will col-lect for: All ages, infant - 18 yrs. old. There will be several drop-off boxes located at the Church. You can contact Susan Englisis (KAP Program Direc-tor) for other arrangements if needed.
Delivering Warm Sleepwear & Nurturing Books To Children In Need
The kids made art inspired by: Louise Nevelson who was an American sculptor known for her monumental, monochro-matic, wooden wall pieces and outdoor sculptures. Born in Czarist Russia, she emigrated with her family to the United States in the early 20th century.

The first month of the new school year has
certainly flown by, and we are happy to re-port an excellent start! Agiasmos was held by Archimandrite George Nikas on 9/15 & 9/17, welcoming new and old students to the Greek School family. We have a growing number of students this year and we are looking forward to a year full of learning and excitement! Edu-cation, friendships, and experiences are just some of the many reasons Greek School is so valuable to our community.
Our staff attended a seminar organized by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America on 10/3 at the St. Demetrious School of Astoria, NYC. Guest speakers from Cyprus and Athens covered the difficulties of learning Greek as a second language and shared tips with teach-ers to overcome these problems.
Our school has an amazing staff and delightful students. I feel extremely fortunate to be part of this team. We have many dedicated and involved parents, and I encourage all of you to get involved with our PTO! Don’t miss our “OXI” Day celebration and St. Demetrious on 10/25 after church services. We are prepar-ing for an excitingly beautiful program. Thanks!!!

KIMISIS JOURNAL Fall 2015 Volume 1, Issue 2 13
This past summer, the Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese of America selected our very own Director, Amalia Vapheas, to attend an international training program for American Greek School teachers, or-ganized by the Cyprus Ministry of Edu-cation. Amalia was one of 10 highly com-petitive individuals chosen for the pro-gram across the U.S., the decision ulti-mately being made by Dr. Efthymiopou-lo Ph.D., the National Director of Greek Education in the USA.
Training seminars were held in class-rooms of the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus in Lefkosia, with lessons combin-ing the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching Greek as a foreign language, along with emphasis on history and cul-ture. The program was filled with visits to archeological and historical sites (Tamassos Curium, Paphos, Tomb Make-donitissa Imprisoned Graves, Deryneia), as well as tours of museums and monas-teries of Cyprus (Monastery of Machai-ras, Kykkos Monastery, Monastery of Agios Neophytos, Leventis Museum).
Several Cypriot state officials received the teachers; of these included the Presi-dent of Cyprus, the Minister of Educa-tion and Culture, the Rector of the Uni-versity,& the Head of the Church. All of them expressed their support for our program and stressed the importance of these teachers’ training to convey the Greek language and maintain Greek cul-ture in the United States. Amalia is ex-tremely excited to take all the valuable lessons she learned from her training and experiences in efforts to make our Greek School better than it’s ever been!!

Greek Orthodox Youth of America
What a great start to the new GOYA school
year we had with our first ice cream social meet
& greet, a successful car wash and our first
lock- in with over 97% attendance of our GOYA
members.
We attended the Holy Cross Celebration in As-
bury Park, and celebrated with our divers as you
can see in our photos. Thank you Andrew Alloy,
Pauline Protentis, Noni Theocharides, and Greg-
ory Haralampoudis.
We were also wonderfully represented at the Mr.
& Miss GOYA by Alexis Sideris and Steven Si-
mon (who was 4th runner up).
What does GOYA mean? Greek Orthodox Youth
of America is the direct translation, but it means
even more. It’s a place where the youth gather
to build new friendships, share stories, issues
that affect them, play sports and create lifelong
relationships that are priceless.
Our Calendar is full for 2015 and more great
things to come in 2016. Our Volleyball and Bas-
ketball season started on Oct. 18th with our girls
winning their first game.

HOPE & JOY HOPE (Holy Orthodox Primary Education ) JOY ( Junior Orthodox Youth )
The children enjoyed running through the corn maze and climbing the haystack pyramid while tackling the puzzle made out of haystacks. They picked their very own pumpkin following the hayride them enjoyed a fresh baked donut with a cup of Apple Cider. This was a great way to reunite while we hope for many more fun memorable events. We had a wonderful turnout on a gorgeous day. Please encourage your friends/parishioners to come out and join our wonderful group. This is a great way for the children to grow within our beautiful church community, making attending church a more comfortable and joyous regimen for our young ones. We welcome families that may be a little reluctant to register to join us during any ONE of our events in hopes they will enjoy it as much as we do, then decide it is a great way to make new friends for both their children and adults. Our goal is to introduce our children to our lovely community as they form bonds that will last for years to come, especial-ly once they join GOYA. JOY/HOPE also rein-stated religious activities that are often ac-companied by Father George. We would like to thank Father George for join-ing us at Dearborn Farms. We hope you will join us on Sunday, November 22nd for our Thanksgiving event. We will talk about what we are all thankful for while making a craft, playing some games and eating some Thanksgiving treats. We will begin immediately following liturgy in the all purpose room. We are looking forward to this exciting event! Vasilia Loucopoulos Kristy Loucopoulos Rose Sikaras

Angel Wish Tree –
displayed November 20
The Angel Wish Tree will
be displayed in the
community center corri-
dor on November 20th. On the 22nd,
parishioners can begin to select an
angel ornament that will hold the
wish of a child in need this Christmas.
Pick an Angel ornament; shop for the
item indicated on the reverse of the
Angel and return it to the tree un-
wrapped by December 10th. Troop
337 will wrap the gift and deliver it to
a child in need here in our Bayshore
area. This is the 3rd year that your
generosity has helped make many

SCOUTING AT KIMISIS
Popcorn Blitz
We welcome everyone back this year and welcome all the new boys and fami-lies. Our Cub Scout Troop meets every other Wednesday in the all purpose room at Kimisis and is headed by Mr. Englisis and Mr. Robbins. We welcome any parent who is interested in joining as a leader to help our Troop grow.
The Boy Scout Troop also meets every other Wednesday with extra meetings throughout the year for special events including camping trips. Leaders in-clude: Jim Marinos, Matt Bistrimovich, George Harlampoudis, Bill Callis, and past leaders who join us at various events. Our first fundraiser was a success this year thanks to the efforts of so many scouts, leaders and parents.
