Everett Public Schools kindergarten program

The state of Washington funds full-day kindergarten at all elementary schools within the district. The instructional day is 6 hours 15 minutes and provides time for extended learning experiences. All Everett kindergarten programs participate in WaKIDS: Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills. WaKIDS is a process for welcoming students and their families to kindergarten, and for assessing children’s strengths and development. During the first three days of the school year, each family--children and parents/guardians--participates in a Family Connection conference with the teacher. This conference provides time for the teacher to get to know the student and family as they begin the kindergarten year. Everett Ready is a transition program held for one week in August to help kindergarten students become familiar with their new school, their teachers, and classmates. All enrolled students are welcome and encouraged to attend this morning program from August 17-21. Start and end times will vary by school. Transportation is provided. In addition to the student program, a family meeting will be scheduled at each school while students are engaged in Everett Ready. This meeting is designed to provide families an opportunity to learn about the school and get to know other families in their community.

Other kindergarten opportunities: The Lighthouse Cooperative is a K-5 choice school located at Jefferson Elementary, built on parent involvement in the classrooms. For more information visit their website at www.lighthousecoop.org or e-mail them at [email protected]. Port Gardner Parent Partnership is a choice school that provides support for home school families and is located adjacent to Sequoia High School. For more information, call 425-385-5150 or visit their website at www.everettsd.org/portgardner.

Choosing a different school: If you are interested in having your child attend kindergarten at a school that is outside of your designated neighborhood (residence) school attendance area, please view the School Transfer information on the district website at http://www.everettsd.org/schooltransfers or call 425-385-4070. Intradistrict transfer requests for the 2020-21 school year will be accepted between January 6 and June 1, which is the open enrollment period. Notification of intradistrict transfer approval or denial may not come until the end of August, just before school begins. Parent must provide transportation for kindergarten programs outside of their designated school area. Please note: Due to high enrollment, many elementary schools are closed to school transfers. Check the district school transfer website for the most current list of schools that are accepting transfer request submissions. Kindergarten intradistrict school transfer forms should be completed and submitted directly to the school you are requesting to attend.

At your neighborhood (residence) school, you must:

Register for kindergarten

At the school you are requesting to attend, you must:

Kindergarten program and WaKIDS information

What is kindergarten?

Kindergarten is the first year of your child’s public-school

life. It is an integral part of the primary program and the

beginning of a child’s formal education. Activities

provided in kindergarten are carefully designed and

appropriate for 5 year olds. Children learn best through

active participation and are provided opportunities to

learn through discovery, interaction, creativity, problem-

solving, conversation, and play.

The state-funded full-day kindergarten program in

Everett Public Schools includes a rich and varied

curriculum that:

· Helps students develop initial skills in the academic

areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.

· Helps students develop language and communication

skills.

· Provides experiences in science, social studies, arts,

physical activities, and music.

· Includes a basic introduction and brief experience

with a world language other than English.

· Helps students acquire large and small motor skills.

· Helps students develop social and emotional skills

including successfully participating in learning

activities as an individual and as part of a group.

What is WaKIDS?

Our state full-day kindergarten programs participate in a

program called Washington Kindergarten Inventory of

Developing Skills (WaKIDS). WaKIDS is part of a

transition process that helps to ensure a successful start

to your child’s school experience. WaKIDS has three

components:

· Family Connection – During the first three days,

teachers will meet with each kindergarten family to get to

know them and learn about the student’s interests,

strengths and needs. Our goal is to welcome your family

to school, establish a relationship at the beginning of the

school year, and create a smooth entry for your child.

Watch for more information from your child’s school

about schedules and details as the start of school

approaches.

· WaKIDS whole child assessment – This is not a

traditional assessment or “test” that a student might

take. At the beginning of the year, teachers observe and

record data about what each child knows in six areas of

development and learning: social-emotional, physical,

cognitive, language, literacy and mathematics. Knowing

more about your child’s skills and strengths as they enter

kindergarten helps teachers and parents work together

to support student growth.

· Early learning collaboration – Our schools are

working to build relationships with early learning

professionals in our community. This partnership

promotes a shared understanding of kindergarten

readiness and supports a smoother transition into school

for our children and families.

Getting started

1. Register your child for Everett Ready so they can attend this important transition program in August. 2. Get to know your child’s teacher by attending your Family Connection meeting scheduled during one of the “first three days” and continue the partnership throughout the school year. 3. Subscribe to receive newsletters and other announcements from your child’s school and the school district. 4. If your child has been in preschool or childcare, consider sharing information you received from your early learning provider with your child’s kindergarten teacher. 5. Be patient if adjustments to school are difficult at first. Each child is an individual and all children differ in their physical and mental development.

Q&A: When is Everett Ready? Everett Ready will be held in the morning from August 17-21, 2020. When will school start in the fall? The first day of kindergarten is September 14, 2020. When is my Family Connection appointment? Family Connection meetings are held during the first three days of the school calendar (September 9, 10, or 11, 2020). Your Family Connection meeting will be scheduled on one of these three days. Your school will be contacting you regarding your family’s appointment. Where can I get more information about WaKIDS? Student Health History and Medication Authorization Information

March 2020 Dear Kindergarten Parent: Welcome to kindergarten in Everett Public Schools. The health and safety of your child is of highest priority to us. For this reason, we have a team of experienced and skilled registered nurses (RNs) who oversee health services in the schools. We also have health room assistants (HRAs) in each school, who function under the supervision of the registered nurse, to attend to the daily health needs of all students. The RN is always available for consultation for health issues that arise. The school’s HRA or office manager can assist in scheduling a time for you to discuss your child’s health issue with the RN. Annual Health History Form To ensure the safety of your child, we require an Annual Health History Form each school year. A copy is included in this registration packet. We strongly recommend that you provide us any health information or health concerns on this form. Information on this form is kept confidential and is used by our RNs to determine the health needs of your child. Does your child have a life-threatening health condition? Washington State defines a "life-threatening condition" as a health condition that will put the child in danger of death during the school day if a medication or treatment order and a nursing health care plan are not in place. Examples of health conditions considered life-threatening include any allergy requiring epinephrine, asthma, diabetes, and/or a seizure disorder. The following is a list of requirements that a child with a life-threatening health condition must have in place before they can attend school:

• A completed Medication Authorization Form signed by the child’s medical provider, and/or

• A completed Treatment Authorization Form signed by the child’s medical provider, and

• A completed nursing health care plan individualized to your child.

• A supply of the ordered medication, in its original and properly labeled container. My child needs medication(s) at school. What do I need to do? Under normal circumstances medication should be dispensed before and/or after school hours under the supervision of the parent or guardian. Medication is defined as any medication prescribed or non-prescribed; including over-the-counter items, vitamins, homeopathic, creams and/or oils. Medication should be given at school only when absolutely necessary. If a student has a valid health reason which requires medication administration during the hours when school is in session, the parent/guardian must:

• Submit a completed Medication Authorization Order Form to the school health room.

• Supply the ordered medication in its original and properly labeled container.

As a reminder, no medication can be given at school without meeting the above requirements. We welcome any questions about health issues and urge you to contact your school if you would like to speak with your school’s nurse. Additionally, please notify your child’s school throughout the year regarding any change in contact numbers or health conditions. Sincerely, The Everett Public Schools Health Services Team

Immunization Record Requirements

March 2020

Dear Parent or Guardian, Starting August 1, 2020, all immunization records turned in to schools are required by state law to be medically verified. Immunization records must be turned into the school on or before the first day of attendance. This means immunization records turned in to the school must be from a health care provider, or you must attach paperwork from a health care provider to your handwritten form that shows your child’s records are accurate. Your child cannot attend school, including Everett Ready, until you provide these records. Here are some examples of medically verified immunization records:

• A completed Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) signed by a health care

provider. Find the CIS form by visiting https://www.doh.wa.gov/SCCI and clicking

on “Certificate of Immunization Status.”

• A CIS filled out by you or another parent/guardian with medical records attached.

• A CIS printed by a health care provider or school from the Washington State

Immunization Information System.

• A CIS printed from MyIR which is a free Department of Health online tool that

allows families to view and print their official immunization records themselves.

Go to https://wa.myir.net/register to begin the sign-up process.

If you are requesting an exemption from one or more of the immunization requirements, you must provide the school a completed Certificate of Exemption. If your child already meets immunization requirements and has records on file with the school, you do not need to do anything. If you aren’t sure, or if you have any questions, please contact the office at your child’s school. Sincerely,

The Everett Public Schools Health Services Team
