Welcome

Angels Issue Fifteen

2014

Angels are messengers or intermediaries between heaven and earth.

Our connection with heaven can be our own Guardian Angel. As children,

there is very little distance between this world and ‘imaginary’ life. The

flowers and the fairies, the world of nature surrounding them, where they

participate with joy and energy, creating wonderful stories and beautiful

memories. But alas, as we grow older we seem to forget those times and

build boundaries around ourselves, losing that sense of wonder. To help

reconnect with the child within, we decided to dedicate this edition of

Kindred Stitches Magazine to angels. What a lovely time of the year as

well to craft and create angels for our homes and for others.

“If instead of a jewel, or even a flower, we could cast the gift of a lovely

thought into the heart of another, that would be giving as the

angels must give”.

DRESDEN PLATE BLOCK

The circular block, commonly called the Dresden Plate was named after the ornately decorated tableware of Dresden,

Germany. This block was popular during the 1920’s and 30’s, however adaptions of this block have been found in quilts

dating back to 1785. This block has many names, Grandmother’s Sunburst, Friendship Ring, Aster, Dahlia and Sunflower

are some of the names used. Quilts using this block, especially in the 1930’s were typically small floral prints made up of

radiating petals from a central circle. The ‘petals’ can be rounded, pointed or curved or a combination of two of these

techniques, appliqued onto a background fabric.
