With the Interior Design Program and the foundation courses for the Department of Art relocating to Howell, the College of Architecture, Art, and Design will be situated in a single area on the Mississippi State University campus. The nature of classes in CAAD requires students to spend countless hours in studios working on projects; therefore, the design goal for Howell centers around community building and the creative stimulation and motivation of the students who study there.

In the Interior Design Department, a generous studio for upper level design students with room for expansion features areas for students to pin up and display work and places for materials storage and layout surfaces. Both private and public zones where ideas can flow, formal classrooms, and informal spaces for spontaneous interaction are key features that address the creative stimulation of the Interior Design students. The Department of Art features generously sized studios with adjustable window treatments for light control and smooth, concrete floors that are easy to clean. Ample pin up space to display art in the studios is highlighted by track lighting.

Nearby hallway displays provide a convenient place to share work with other students, teachers, and visitors to the school, thus increasing the sense of community. Encouraging collaboration and connection between students starts with creating a sense of place in an open environment. Focusing on the students and providing maximum opportunities for interaction will transform the College of Architecture, Art, and Design into a thriving campus community.

Students are what will make up the professional world, much like cells make up the human body. When comparing students to organic cells, there are many coinciding characteristics. It is important that they are provided with nutrients and insight that will improve society. Just how the cell is the structural unit of life, students at NEXT University are the foundation of the future society. Active learning and student engagement provided through the innovative design of the space strengthens the internal structure of our world.

Design an innovative patient room that is high in technology, allows the patient to have control, and is family friendly. Combine healthcare with hospitality to create a space that changes the face of an everyday healthcare environment.

Including natural daylighting and calming colors in the design incourages the health of the patients. A large window allows large amounts of natural light to enter the space as well as provide a view of the nearby landscape. The integration of LED lighting and technology with the surrounding architectural environment creates a new medical experience through modernizing the delivery of care and improving patient outcomes. Also, architectural features and a cool color scheme within the space inspire and relax patients who often suffer from the anxieties that are often apparent in healthcare settings.

Biophilic Design is based on the theory that human health and well-being has a biologically based need to affiliate with nature. With a recent trend in sustainability and green building, this patient room design focuses on improving patient health and satisfaction through the combined use of architecture and nature. Through balancing nature, function, and the necessary sterility, this patient room promotes the necessary setting to provide both physical and psychological patient care.

Design for the uses of a medical clinic, specifically focusing on the needs of a Women’s Clinic. This project includes a single component that is meant to accommodate multiple professionals within the same clinic.

Minerals can be described by various physical properties which relate to their chemical structure and composition. They are naturally occurring substances with many different species that are rarely the same. Although they may have a lot of the same physical properties and chemical composition, they are all individually different when you examine them closer. All of these aspects of minerals can be related to women. Women also come in all different types, even though they are generally the same. Prism is a place where women of all types are able to come and feel comfortable to be themselves and relax in this environment of cool colors and feminine appeal.

In order to meet the needs of the professionals within the clinic, the goal was to divide the space accordingly while still able to access certain areas from both units. Locating the mul-tiple use spaces in the center helped to provide a proficient space plan for the client.

NEXT is an organization that looks to create the next “big thing” in innovation. They are a not-for-profit foundation that brings in entrepreneurs for a period of time to get fresh and culturally different ideas. The goal for the design is to create a space that can support their changing atmosphere and unique attributes.

Individual spaces support the idea of a creative and collaborative environment. The ideation zone is located in the center of the open office to encourage the workers on their current projects. The think tank is a place where workers can bounce ideas off each other freely and grow their design. With a visually open floor plan and many places to share, this space creates an environment that encourages the employees to come together in collaboration. The space will have the employees excited to see what is NEXT.

The inspiration for the design is the process of corrosion of copper and how patina forms on its surface. When copper is exposed to the elements, a series of chemical reactions form a pale green layer over the copper which is called patina. Like copper, products are redesigned by the minds of the company to further develop the world, making it more beautiful. The goal of the design is to create a space that encourages the creativity of the employees, allows for individual working, and most importantly promotes the collaboration of ideas. Selecting a metal for the concept of the design reinforces the idea of a magnetic space.

Research the assigned country to learn about their customs and culture. The restaurant’s name, branding, and design should be developed based on the culture etiquette of the area, designs, and motifs of the culture as well as the type of food that will be served.

Upon entering the space you are engulfed in the warmth and tranquility of the exterior and then welcomed into the reception area. To the left side of the reception area rests the bar and lounge where guests are able to wait comfortably for their table. The remainder of the space is divided into different intimate enclaves that allow the guests to have intimate family dining. The private dining spaces are mirrored from the bar/lounge. Locating them off in their own space creates an environment that is easily divided, yet still open to the rest of the space when needed. Single tables are worked into the flow of the design, so small parties are able to get the private dining experience. The layout of these spaces allows for private dining as well as casual that is open for the Argentine people to enjoy in their evening together.

The use of sheer fabrics and elegant draping inspired the overall design. When studying how fabric reacts to a breeze, it was evident that it had a lot in common with the people of Argentina. As the fabric is caught by a gust of air, it elegantly flows in a curvilinear shape. This experience of warmth and intimacy is sure to keep the locals coming back for a chance to unwind.

In the city of your choice, develop branding and design of a boutique hotel that houses a restaurant, lobby bar, spa, workout facility, guest rooms, and rooftop bar. The branding for each space must coordinate with the overall design of the boutique hotel.

The elegant scene of Molokini houses an array of amenities, fit for elite guests of Wakiki. A blend of modern and traditional elements create a stimulating and alluring environment for guests of all ages. With sophisticated suites, a vivacious bar scene and rejuvenating spa atmosphere, Molokini brings city elegance into the tropical tranquility of Wakiki.

The inspiration for the design of the space is derived from the crescent-shaped volcanic crater that is home to the most abundant, famous coral reef off the south coast of the island of Hawaii. Strong curves and fluidity reminiscent of the volcanic crater and coral reef are found in the overall space plan and design. Rich textures mimicking various types of coral inspire the design aspects of individual spaces.

Work together with Architecture, Building Construction, and Graphic Design students to create a space that can help local start-up businesses. This should be a space where any type of craftsman can display their products at any amount.

The final design allows for small business owners to lease individual units varying in size. Each unit is adjustable to accommodate any type of product that could be displayed. The display walls are interchangeable and can be easily adjusted for the users.

Etc. in its simplest form is an abbreviation that is used to represent the concept of “and more.” Etc. is an incubator business created to encourage, nurture, and support local artisans by providing a shared place for them to showcase their products in a newly renovated building in downtown Starkville, Mississippi. With business planning, local, accounting, and marketing services, Etc. lives up to the plan of the “and more” concept. It not only provides retail space for the artisans to sell their handcrafted pottery, candles, clothing, “and more,” but also gives them the helping hand that they need to succeed, grow their businesses, and survive on their own. With additional room for an art gallery inside and visiting vendors outside, Etc. clearly functions as an incubator retailer “and more.”

Incorporate initial concept ideas into the store front, graphics, signage, way finding and the exploration of relevant sales technologies and their incorporation into the guest journey. The design must consider the locations in NYC, London, and Tokyo.

As the seasons change, leaves cycle from tender green shoots in the spring to the healthy, mature leaves of summer to all the pretty colors of fall, such as orange, yellow, magenta, and even indigo. Leaves possess the enviable quality of being able to age gracefully and beautifully. Just as leaves evolve from tender buds to colorful maturity and women ripen from the dew of youth to the full bloom of womanhood, FLOURISH will evolve from a concept to a successful global business as it meets the beauty needs of women in an organic and healthy way.

FLOURISH caters to the ever-changing beauty needs of its targeted clientele and helps them glide gracefully from one season of life to the next by carrying a product line that evolves as the client evolves. These products are showcased in an environment with a ceiling featuring layers that resemble a canopy of leaves in a tree. The architecture of the storefront evolves into the structure of the ceiling, creating a pattern that is organic and follows the curves of the floor plan. This curving plan draws customers from the front of the store where products are displayed to the rear where services are provided, thus ensuring that all products are easily seen and accessible.

In order to make this project completely recycled, it was decided that the components of

the light fixture would be gathered from the thrift store. After exploring many different ideas, three

components were selected. The fruit bowl was the first object that set the look of the design.

The original purpose of the brass fruit bowl was changed to become the shade of the table lamp.

Second selected was the oil lamp base. Although the original purpose of this piece was also

illumination, it was recycled from a fuel well, fuel oil and a wick, to the modern day electric light assembly. The electric wiring of the lamp runs through the same way the fuel oil ran through

the body of the lamp in its previous life. After deciding on the glass oil lamp base, it needed a

steady base to balance out the fixture as well as provide housing for the end of the wiring. The

dessert dish was the perfect fit to complete the base of the fixture.
