A Guide to BEAT THE HEAT IN KINGS COUNTY

Goals for the Plan

• Develop a plan which will assist in anticipating heat emergencies

• Educate the public about the dangers of heat emergencies

• Educate the public about what to do in the event of a heat

emergency.

1 – Seasonal Readiness

4-Phase Plan

2 – Increased Readiness

3 – Heat Alert

4 - Blackout

Phase 1 – Seasonal Readiness

• Identify Vulnerable Populations• Create and distribute educational

materials to locations these populations frequent

• Identify Cool Places• Begins May 1st

Phase 2 – Increased Readiness• Triggered by the issuance of a

Heat Outlook by the National Weather Service in Hanford

• Suggest reduction of outdoor activities

• Spend time in Air-Conditioned locations

• Drink Plenty of Water

Phase 3 – Heat Alert

1. Governor declares Emergency & opens Kings Fair Grounds

*OR*2. County Standards:

• 105 for 2 days&

• Not below 80 at night

• Sheriff’s RUOK Program important here• Suggest halting of outdoor activities• Monitor for possibility of blackout

Cool PlacesLocations

throughout the county who have agreed to open their doors to those who are seeking an air-

conditioned location during business hours.

• Senior Centers• Libraries• Family Resource

Centers

Phase 4 - Blackout

• We have identified locations in the county with generators which may be able to provide cool places for some residents

• Keep water on hand in case the power does go out
