Message from Board Chair - Pete Bratlie - 911 Contact Info
One Sunday morning a few weeks ago, Toni and I woke up at 3:30 AM to someone banging on our front
door and ringing our doorbell. I got up, got dressed quickly and went to investigate. We have a glass front
door and I could see two men standing on my front porch. I went into the front bedroom where I could see
out and then realized they were in uniform. I then saw the Firetruck and Ambulance in front of my
neighbor’s house. I opened the front door and talked to two firemen. The neighbor had fallen (she is in her
80’s and lives alone) and couldn’t get up. She had told 911 that we had her garage door opener – which
we did. We got it for the firemen and the battery was dead. She had also told 911 that another neighbor
had a key, so they woke him up and got in. I suggested to 911 that they establish a contact system rather
than banging on someone’s door at 3:30 in the morning. I received a message from Charles Grubb, who is
a friend and client and the attorney for 911, who said that you can contact 911’s Administrator – Martha
Carter – at 318-675-2222 and add information to your data base, so that for instance, 911 could have
called us at 3:30 rather than have the firemen bang on our door. I would much rather answer the phone
than the door at that time of day. If you are in a position where you may need 911, it may be a good idea to
add any contacts to your 911 data base.

FROM THEMinister
Last week’s great tragedy in Charleston once again reminded us how much hatred and ugliness there is all around us. We were reminded that there are people who will gladly go out of their way to make this world a more violent and hate-filled place. It is astounding how effective their weapons are. How quickly nine lives can be lost and thou-sands of lives can be damaged. The tools that we have been given seem so weak in comparison. As Christians we are called to show love and kindness to those who are grieving but a million acts of love can’t undo one great act of violence.
There is no doubt that opposing the evil of bigotry requires courage and persistence. Courage is something God will give us as we decide to get off the bench and into this fight. God will give us the courage to de-nounce this kind of violence as the lowest
form of cowardice. God will give us the courage to speak out against ignorance and bigotry wherever we encounter it (even among our friends and family, and even here at church). God will give us the courage to state the completely obvious, that hurting anyone because of his or her race, religion or sexual orientation is sinful and evil. God will give us the courage stand firm when others slink away and to be bold when others follow the crowd.
This is the kind of courage I am going to be praying for not just in these weeks ahead but for the rest of my ministry and the rest of my life. Because sometimes it takes great cour-age to make good choices, to love everyone, and to look forward to tomorrow.
David
