Debating News.

Once again Kings Langley debaters have had a busy and successful start to the year. Every year our school enters two

debating competitions: the Blacktown Debating Competition and the Premier’s Debating Competition.

The Blacktown competition is organised in a round robin format and students have time to prepare the debates in

advance. In this competition, we have had one win and one loss. Our third debate is on Thursday the 1st June 2017,

against Blacktown South Public School. The topic of the debate is “That family and friends are equally important.” Kings

Langley Public School is hosting the debate and we are arguing for the affirmative.

We have a Year 5 squad (coached by Mrs Case) and a Year 6 squad (coached by Mrs Dyer) in the Premier’s Debating

Competition. The Year 6 team have had three wins in this competition, unfortunately, one of which was against our Year

5 team. The Year 5 team will be debating later in the term.

Mrs Case and I would like to acknowledge the hard work our debaters put into their training and debate preparation. It is

wonderful to see students develop and improve their debating skills with each debate.

Kings Langley Debaters:

Year 6: Gabriel S, Phoebe T, Nathan F, Jaden R, Krish G, Avieral S, Lillian B, Dulan K, Jiya D, Emily R and Rosie G.

Year 5: Bella N, Eliza Q, Aaliyah K, Lexi F, Annabelle B, Richa D, Chelsea D.

Thank you,

Debating Co-ordinator

Mrs Dyer

KINGS LANGLEY SCHOOL FINAL FOR THE MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES PUBLIC SPEAKING

COMPETITION

Every year Kings Langley Public School enters the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition run by the

Performing Arts Unit. Last week our school finals were held. Children were required to present not only their prepared

speech, but also an impromptu speech. What super school finals we had!

Chanel C, Cameron E, Chloe S, Elina Y, Joshua B, Lara N, Charlotte H and Emily F participated in the Stage 2 final.

Their impromptu topic was ‘happiness’. These children did a magnificent job with all speakers managing to speak for at

least 30 seconds about what happiness means and what makes them happy in their impromptu speech. Congratulations to

Elina Y and Joshua B who will represent our school in the Local Area final.

Sarah A, Chelsea D, Sara E, Josaia D, Jaden R, Nathan F and Ashleigh W participated in the Stage 3 final. Their

impromptu topic was ‘The greatest of all”. Well done to all children for having a go and doing their best. Our speakers

thought that Australia, our families, favourite footy teams in the grand finals, our school and friends all made up the

greatest of all. Judging proved a difficult task but congratulations to Sarah A and Josaia D who will be our Stage 3

representatives.

Enormous congratulations and well done to the super Year 5 students who so capably ran the finals. Thanks to Ella S for

chairing and Eliza Q for timing the finals. Perhaps the toughest job was organising and policing the impromptu speech

writing time. Well done to Sheehan T, Adrian I, Kate C, Bella N, Fae G and Aaliyah K for this difficult task!

We wish our school representatives Elina, Joshua, Sarah and Josaia best of luck when they compete in June at the Local

Area Final.

STATE CUP NETBALL NEWS - On Tuesday May 30, I had the pleasure of taking 9

very talented netballers out to Jamison Park, Penrith to compete in the State Cup Knock-

out Competition.

It was a very cold morning but all the girls arrived keen to play. Our first game was

against Werrington County PS and KL won 20-10. The second game was against

Crawford PS and again KL won convincingly 18-7. The final match was against Pitt

Town PS. Kings Langley started out strong and led going into the second half. It was a

very close game and the girls tried their best but were defeated by 3 goals.

I was extremely proud of their efforts and very impressed with their skills and sportsmanship. I would like to

thank Maddie from Glenwood Netball Club for giving up her time to umpire our games. I would also like to

thank the parents for transporting the team to and from the venue and all the family and friends who came to

support and cheer on our team. A great day was had by all.

Team members: Aaliyah T, Ali F, Ella S, Emily B, Kate C, Lauren B, Lexi F, Madison V, and Nicole K.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Encouraging and praising children

Motivation is ‘our reason for doing’

Motivation is what drives us to act in order to achieve our goals.

We can be self-motivated when we give ourselves rewards such as when we:

feel pleasure and pride

feel good about ourselves, our efforts and what we have achieved.

Children who are self-motivated tend to stick at things for longer. They feel a sense of control over

what they are doing and like challenges. When children feel they can achieve their goals, they feel

good about themselves which benefits their mental health and wellbeing.

Children can also be motivated by being rewarded by others (eg by receiving praise, having a trip to

the park, or spending time with friends). This does not mean motivating children requires adults to

reward them each time they do something well. Sometimes, rewarding children can make them feel

they need to do things well in order to get someone else's approval. As a consequence they may

avoid activities and this can lead to a reduced sense of control and lowered self-confidence

Praise and rewards both motivate and de-motivate children, depending on how they are used. When

and how children have been praised may be one reason why they differ in their levels of confidence

and motivation. Next are some examples of how praise can be done well and not so well.

Praise done well and Praise done not so well,

The situation; The child-Barbara has done a painting.

She shows the painting to mum.

General Praise-“lovely painting, looks pretty”.

Page 10: KINGS LANGLEY PUBLIC SCHOOL · Year 2 History tour Tuesday 6th June - 3-6 Assembly ... pre-loved books and toys, lucky numbers, raffle, putt -putt, disco and commando course are

Specific and more effectual Praise-“Look at the colours used in this painting you have made a good

effort!”.

Evaluates children

"You're a good counter Libby."

Acknowledges children

Praise done well; "You're excited about doing counting today Libby."

Giving children rewards for the outcome

"You caught the ball Libby, you deserve a star."

Praise done well; Links children's activities with the feelings of enjoyment they experience while doing

them.

"You tried to catch the ball three times Libby, you seem pleased that you did so well."

Effective praise can motivate children. As parents, care givers or teachers we can motivate children by

using praise which is done well.

For more resources on this topic go to:

The website; kidsmatter.edu,au/mental health/social and emotional learning/motivation and praise.

Regards,

Simone Brown (aka Happy Chappy)

We have 2 x Mondays per month; one Monday needing one volunteer and the other needing two volunteers.

We also have 2 x Fridays per month; both needing one volunteer.

We also have a Tuesday Supervisor role to be filled (full training will be given).

The hours are 9am to 2pm or as many hours you are able to give.

for your child’s education.

The children love seeing their mum’s, dad’s and grandparent’s faces so come and volunteer

and join the fun!!
