As I write this letter, I am grateful for yet another opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation for all the amazing support that our community displays every day. This support takes on many different forms. From volunteering your time and resources to creating a vibrant and engaging community of learners, all of these generous gifts are at the heart of what makes Kingsley the exceptional school that it is today, and will continue to be, well into the future. I am so privileged to be a part of such a caring and dynamic community.

The 2013-2014 Annual Report is just one more example that reflects our community’s spirit of giving. We’ve had our best year ever in reaching a record-setting $602,546 donated to our Annual Fund with 85% parent participation! These essential resources are critical to help maintain our school and to shape Kingsley’s future.

The allocation of these donations assists in developing three critical areas of our school: people, pro-grams and space. This past year with your generosity, we were able to fund the following:

• New curriculum initiatives (RULER-Social Emotional Learning Program and STEAM); • Increased opportunities for faculty professional development and more development of our

parent education program (Parent Speaker Series); • Addition of new furniture and materials for Lower Elementary and Toddler as well as space

modifications at Exeter; • Library renovations at Fairfield; • Hiring of more faculty to support the growing Elementary Program; • Montessori certification for faculty; and • Purchase of additional musical instruments to accommodate our growing Sixth Grade.

While these examples highlight only some of our larger accomplishments this past year, I am equally proud of our graduates who were once again sought after by many of the most competitive middle and high schools in the greater Boston area. We are thrilled to have achieved a successful 100% next school placement for the Class of 2014 to their top schools of choice. And, for the third consecutive year, we saw notably strong retention in all program levels.

Along with our students’ academic achievements, is the importance of their learning service work in community outreach. I’ve had the joy of watching some of our youngest students flourish as leaders, demonstrating remarkable acts of kindness in their work with the Food Pantry while our Sixth Graders rolled up their sleeves to help stock the shelves at Room to Grow for impoverished, young families in need. More recently, our community gathered to reflect on Mayor Menino’s legacy and work within the Boston community. I know he was so very proud of our students’ commitment and support of the Bos-ton Medical Center. The importance of teaching our students to be local and global citizens is crucial, and I’m truly touched by the empathy and caring they show for each other and our community.

On behalf of the nearly 300 students who discover, grow, and realize their full potential at Kingsley, I would like to extend my most sincere gratitude for your wonderful and remarkable generosity. The tremendous wealth of time, resources, and talent you extend to the School is awe-inspiring. Thanks to your support, Kingsley continues to provide our students and families with a truly transformational, Foundational Decade of learning.

Sincerely,

Renee DuChainey-FarkesHead of School

Page 3: Kingsley's Annual Report 2013-14

We are gratified with the School’s continued strong performance in the areas of enrollment growth at all grade levels and retention– now in its third year averaging 90%. Both metrics are clear indicators that we continue to deliver on our mission in providing the best learning and teaching experiences for our students and their families.

This past year, we have made significant progress in our strategic goals to secure Kingsley’s long term sustainability. Areas where we have focused our efforts include:

• Hiring of additional faculty to support our expanding Elementary Program; • Adding additional classroom space and new, adjustable furniture for Lower Elementary to enhance

their learning environments; • Repointing the Fairfield building’s brick exterior for restoration, energy efficiency, and beautification; • Creating a new Assistant Head of School position to augment the leadership structure and to assist

with the growing needs of the School; and • Auditing the School’s infrastructure to ensure the organization performs optimally to meet the needs

of 300 plus students and their families.

As we prepare for Kingsley’s future, the Board continues to prioritize its efforts in the critical areas of programming, learning environments, and viability. These initiatives are focused on enhancing our programmatic offerings and creating more age-appropriate learning environments for our Elementary Program. By focusing on these important areas in our strategic planning, we can assure that our students and their families will continue to enjoy an exemplary educational experience in the best learning environments possible.

As both a trustee and member of the community, I am highly invested in Kingsley’s success and sustainable future. I am honored to help lead Kingsley in this momentous time, and grateful for your ongoing support.

With the 2013-14 fiscal year end, I am pleased to report that Kingsley’s financial position continues to improve. The School is now in its fourth consecutive year of generating net operating income, largely due to strong enrollment and retention, careful expense management, and healthy revenue from the Annual Fund and Scholarship Gala. Earnings from on-going operations help ensure continued long-term sustainability and allow the School to make strategic investments in programs and teachers, while also minimizing annual tuition increases.

Kingsley’s success in our core operations have helped:

• Fund competitive faculty salary increases for existing teachers;• Attract new faculty and administrators from best-in-class institutions;• Create a Board Designated Fund to address existing operational needs without incurring debt; and• Position Kingsley to purse a strategic growth and programmatic excellence plan with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

As we prepare for the next generation of Kingsley, we will continue to work hard in making the right investments in key programs and curricula with the goal of achieving the best learning environment for students today while enhancing the legacy of the School in the future.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to achieving future success together.

Sincerely,

Greg Fisher, Treasurer

FROM THE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRSOn behalf of the Development and Gala committees we would like to extend our sincere thanks and apprecia-tion to the entire Kingsley community for another year of unprecedented generosity. Together, our families, alumni parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, and friends contributed over $775,000 in support of Kingsley.

The Annual Fund saw a record-breaking total of $602,546 raised by a robust 85% of the parent community. Our parent volunteers’ commitment to personal outreach is engaging our community with meaningful dialogue about the impact a healthy Annual Fund has on Kingsley. It is clear that our message about the importance of a reliable Annual Fund is being heard and answered generously by so many; and we thank you for your engagement and generosity.

As the Annual Fund grows, the Board and Head of School have an increasingly reliable resource to draw upon for the school’s operational costs. This additional source of support is crucial as our school reaches full enrollment. It has given the school the ability to retain and attract the most innovative faculty and to provide them with the developmental support and materials necessary for a first-class educational experience. The Annual Fund has an immediate and direct impact on the experience every student and teacher has daily, and we are certain that every member of the faculty, staff, and student population is grateful for your support.

With a strong showing in our Annual Fund this year, we are also pleased to share the success of the Schol-arship Gala held in March. We benefited greatly from the leadership of some truly dedicated volunteers who lent a significant amount of time and energy organizing a beautiful, memorable event. Raising over $175,000 for financial aid, our Gala again surpassed the projected budgeted figure. We are so appreciative for the remarkable generosity and sense of community that this event brought forth.

Your steadfast support of Kingsley is inspiring. We are grateful for the many ways our community comes together in support of our School; it is what makes Kingsley such a special experience for children and families in these foundational years. Thank you for all you have done.

Sincerely,

Becky Kidder Smith and Kris Stookey - Co-Chairs, Development Committee

ANNUAL GIVING 2013–2014Annual Giving includes both the Kingsley Annual Fund and the Scholarship Gala. Each serves a distinct purpose. The Annual Fund is a critical line item in our operating budget which allows us to invest in our teachers, students, and programs each year. The Scholarship Gala is the primary source of funding for our financial aid program. We rely on both initiatives to achieve our strategic and financial goals. We are deeply grateful for the tremendous support of the following donors, many of whom have contributed to both.

“ Our involvement at Kingsley is really important to us. The sense of community and support we feel here is incredible. We value the robust academics and enrichment programs that Kingsley offers. Emma has really flourished here and loves the school. We couldn’t think of a better way to give back to the school than with our time as volunteers on the Development Committee to help Kingsley be the best it can be for current and future families.
