Daylighting Solutions

Inspection & MaintenanceRooflights and wall lights should be examined as part of the annual and post-storm roof inspection programme. The rooflights and wall lights should be inspected for damage. Fixings should be examined to ensure they have not become loose. Any damaged rooflights, wall lights or loose fixings should be replaced at the earliest convenience.

General Cleaning GuidanceAll roof coverings are affected by rainfall for natural cleaning. On very low roof pitches or where debris has accumulated they can be affected by dirt, grime and fuel pollution deposits, etc. Therefore, it is good practice to check for debris as part of the building maintenance annual inspections.

In the event of dirt or debris accumulation, using the correct cleaning procedures and techniques can help to prolong service life, appearance, and maintain optimum lighting levels into the building.

Polycarbonate façade wall lights are less affected by natural rainfall cleaning, therefore may require regular (annual or as necessary) cleaning in order to maintain a good appearance.

For Polycarbonate rooflight or wall light cleaning, it is recommended that the following guidelines are observed.

Cleaning Method for sections of Kingspan Day-Lite productsManual Cleaning of Small Areas of RooflightsGently wash the polycarbonate surface with a mild soap solution and warm water, using a soft, clean cloth or sponge to loosen any dirt or grime.

Never use an abrasive cleaner. Regularly check cleaning cloths for dirt or debris that could abrade or scratch the surface of the rooflight or wall light.

Finally, thoroughly rinse with clean water to remove any soap residue.

Manual Cleaning of Larger Areas of Roof LightsClean the surface using a high pressure water cleaner @ max. 100bar or 1.450 psi or by using a steam cleaner. It is suggested that a test is carried out on a small area before cleaning the entire section of rooflights. The use of additives to the water or steam cleaner should be avoided.

Important– Never use an abrasive or highly alkaline cleaner.– Never scrub with brushes, steel wool or other abrasive

materials.– Do not clean in hot sunny conditions or at elevated

temperatures as this can lead to staining.– Care is required when using a pressure washer not to point

the lance towards, any side or end laps in the surrounding roof cladding, as this will force apart the weather seals to the cladding.

For use of other cleaning solutions, please contact specialist contractors or suppliers.

CompositionUnits comprising multi-wall or multi-layer polycarbonate.

Health HazardsConsideration of the composition of this product indicates that in normal use it does not present a health hazard.

Fire HazardsIt is prudent to take precautions against ignition, fire and smoke hazard.

In fire situations, beware of low visibility due to soot and avoid smoke inhalation. Smoke contains carbon monoxide and other gases, which may be injurious to health if inhaled. If smoke or fumes are inhaled seek fresh air and medical assistance immediately.

In fire situations, rooflight units which may have been subjected to very high temperatures may lose their normal strength, which may adversely affect their non-fragility.

Storage, Handling and UsePrecautions must be taken to minimise the hazards in storage, handling and use. Good practices suggest the following precautions.

Storage1 Store in a location free from any ignition hazard such as

open flames, cutting and welding torches, high surface temperatures, electric heaters and other forms of direct radiant heat.

2 Do not stack more than 1 Day-Lite pack high. Ensure stability of stack and provide adequate aisle space for access between stacks.

3 Store packs off the ground and on a slope, so that should rain water penetrate the wrapping, water will drain away.

4 Support the packs evenly with bearers.

Installation1 During the fixing operation or whilst handling, laceration of

the skin is possible on the edge of the sheet.2 Product is supplied in heavy bundles and injury may result

from incorrect lifting or handling.3 If hot working using flame or other ignition hazard must be

done near exposed polycarbonate rooflight or Wall-Lite, the product should be protected with a heat resistant material.

Precautions– Protective clothing particularly gloves should be worn to

avoid skin lacerations.– Handling packs should be in accordance with HSE

recommendations.– Do not use flame cutting equipment, blow lamps or any

high temperature equipment or process near the products.– In the event of a fire, breathing apparatus should be worn.

COSHHEmployers must ensure that there are measures in place that will control or limit the exposure of their employees to any substance hazardous to health. A supporting COSHH document for our daylighting range is available at www.kingspanpanels.com.
