Message from the Head of Middle School

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We began this term with a full Middle School worship assembly. This assembly was a wonderful time of connecting with the Lord. Worldview question:

“How can we be kaitiaki (guardians, stewards) of the resources God has given us in New Zealand?”

Biblical Studies and Social Studies

Integrated Unit: ‘Kaitiaki for the Kingdom’

Students will build on their understanding of the Kingdom of God, with foci on the provision that God has given us in creation and the mandate to mankind to be kaitiaki here on earth. This will be extended to understanding God’s provision of gifts and talents to us individually and collectively, to use to bless others and extend God’s Kingdom. In Biblical Studies, students will continue to develop their Bible literacy and engage with key kingdom concepts to deepen their understanding of God’s plan for their life. They will focus on God’s provision to Abraham and Moses.

Students will learn some big picture concepts about challenges to our physical environment and then focus on recycling. This will equip them with understanding and practical ideas for doing their part to be kaitiaki.

English:

Written Language

Year 7 students have a major focus of narrative writing and a minor focus of procedural texts. We will reinforce their prior

knowledge, correct writing structures of the different genres and build students’ ability to write using appropriate language features for narratives. Education Perfect Language homework tasks will support learning at school. We have a weekly punctuation and grammar focus at school.

Reading

The main foci this term are comprehension and vocabulary building through novel studies. Students will be guided through a novel, which is targeted to their reading level. They will undertake a range of activities connected to their novel, applying critical thinking, inference skills and language acquisition as they read and apply thinking skills. Students will respond to their novel in a variety of ways including orally, visually and written.

Visual Language

Students will apply visual language features to create a brochure or poster about recycling. They will learn about layout and design.

Oral Language

Students will continue to have opportunities to gain tools and build their confidence to speak to groups of various sizes. They will present recycled wearable art to the class at the end of the term.

Science

Students will investigate God’s amazing creation, His people. We will explore body systems including the muscular-skeletal system and the perfect balances present in other parts of our bodies.

Physical Education

This term students will explore the skills and strategies of attacking and defending through a variety of Invasion Games.

Key Competencies Relating to Others and Participating and Contributing will continue to be promoted and taught throughout the PE programme.

Please make sure your child has their PE gear for each lesson, a towel and trainers/sports shoes as we will be out and about in all weather this term.

Mathematics:

The Strand focus for this term is Algebra, focusing on patterns, graphs and different types of equations. Learning activities will be targeted to individual student gaps and designed to optimize student outcomes. Students will also continue to build and develop number knowledge and skills throughout the term, including working with fractions and decimals.

Year 8 Term 2 Trip: Chelsea Sugar Factory

Worldview question:

“How can I deepen my understanding of the Bible and His creation to gain a deeper understanding of the character of our God? “

Biblical Studies:

Students explore God’s word and examine the intricate details of His work through the two themes. They will learn to apply a biblical lens to their learning and see the universe how God see’s it. With a rich understanding of the Bible, students will be encouraged to share their interpretations of scripture and how it relates to them and their season. Our weekly worship sessions have seen students grow in their relationship with Jesus as they seek to know Him more.

Social Studies:

Our two themes are ‘Wonders of Nature’ and ‘Sustainability’. Through research and inquiry, students will learn important facts and information about each natural wonder, including past explorers, geographical location, specifications and the extent of God’s creation. Students will take on the role of a travel agent and choose one Natural Wonder to research and then design an informative and eye-catching brochure for a family wanting to explore one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Sustainability is a valuable and relevant topic that challenges people’s everyday actions. It is our hope that through a greater understanding, students feel empowered to be caretakers of what God has entrusted them with. Psalm 24:1: "The Earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it". Students will investigate how the Hibiscus Coast has changed over the past 100 years; infrastructure, farming,

population, wildlife and waterways/oceans and more. They will select one change to represent in a physical model using recycled materials.

English:

Written Language

Students will write an information report on one of the natural wonders of the world. They will collate valuable information to create their own travel brochure using CANVA. A focus for students in their writing is to write succinctly and with careful choice of vocabulary to ensure the most impact on their audience. Spellzone will continue to be a part of their weekly home learning programme and in-class reading lessons.

Reading

Students will explore a novel to develop a greater understanding about topics and subjects, and see things in texts (fiction or non-fiction) that we would otherwise miss. Through an in-depth critical analysis of chapters within their novel, students will select and use appropriate processing and comprehension strategies with increasing understanding and confidence. Based on our two themes of this term, ‘Wonders of Nature’ and ‘Sustainability’, students will explore informative texts which highlight key information and facts that will help to develop their knowledge of these concepts.

Oral Language

Using the ‘think, pair, share’ concept, students will discuss various ideas within our two themes and theme share their knowledge in hands-on activities. In becoming a travel agent and expert on one of the natural wonders, students will share their brochure in a small group.

Science

Students will focus on completing an assessment based on animal classification. They will then explore ecosystems and biomes. A biome is a different form of an ecosystem in which a large land area with a distinct climate and plants and animal species exists. The ecosystem is an interaction of the living and non- living components in an environment. We will also learn about food chains and food webs. Students will create an ‘Animal Profile’ about an animal which lives in a specific biome.

A high point of the term will be when we complete a practical around microscopes and examine plant cells.

Physical Education

Students will be exploring Invasion Games, both traditional ones and unusual ones. They will look at the skills needed for attacking and defending and how to apply these in a game situation.

Key Competencies Participation and Contributing and Relating to Others will be promoted throughout the PE programme.

Please make sure your child has their PE gear for each lesson, a towel and trainers/sports shoes as we will be out and about in all weather this term.

Mathematics:

Foundational mathematical knowledge and skills continues to be a focus that underpins our mathematics programme. Students continue to develop their basic facts, and fractions, decimals, and integers knowledge. Geometry is our strand focus for this term. The key idea of Geometry that students will focus on is that 3-dimensional objects can be shown by a variety of 2-dimensional representations. They will sort shapes according to their geometric properties and apply their knowledge to word problems and inquiries.

“How can I deepen my understanding of the Bible and His creation to gain a deeper understanding of the

character of our God? “

Tiri Tiri Matangi

Worldview question:

“How does God want us to live?”

Biblical Studies:

We have a continuation of The Sermon on the Mount where students will understand: • Matthew’s gospel and how the Sermon on

the Mount fits into the whole story of Jesus in Matthew’s gospel.

• The Beatitudes and how to describe how living, on the basis of Matthew 5:3-11, could affect their daily lives.

• That Jesus’ followers should stand out from the rest of the world and explore some of the ways in which we might expect our lives to be different.

• That God cares about our attitudes as much as our actions and that God shows forgiveness towards us.

• What Jesus teaches about how his disciples are to show gracious and generous love towards others even their enemies.

• The importance of prayer in their relationship with God and seek God first, more than approval from others.

• That Jesus’ followers are to treasure God’s kingdom above everything else.

• Jesus and his words provide a foundation for life.

Social Studies:

The Term 2 unit is WWII. The Holocaust explores the ideas of ethnocentrism, prejudice and stereotyping in society. Future generations need to be reminded not to make the same mistakes past generations have made. People need to think for themselves and not blindly follow orders and others. As Christians, we obey God rather than people and live in a way that honours Him. Special attention is paid to the following: - What is wrong with the world?

- How is this different from God’s design?

- What makes bad thinking bad? What makes good thinking good?

- How do we transform our thinking? How do we actively put on the mind of Christ?

- How do patterns of thinking shape our attitudes and behaviour?

- What impact does our thinking have on others?

English:

Written Language

Students will focus on essay writing this term. Skills that are focused on are: - The use of paragraphs for main ideas and supporting details. - Introductions and conclusions are relevant. - Carefully selected evidence and examples from text are used to explain statements. - Links are evident between paragraphs and the introductions and conclusions agree.

Reading

The novel study this term is ‘The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas’. Additional reading material in other learning areas will supplement the Reading programme. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas explores the ideas of ethnocentrism, prejudice and stereotyping in society and uses the symbolism of the fence to show the divides there are in our communities. As Christians, we obey God rather than people and live in a way that honours Him.

Visual Language

Students will create a static image related to themes in their novel study, lifting a quote (a word or group of words used by the author) from the fiction text The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

They will also be making ‘Dreamboards’ as part of their Social Studies unit.

Science

Students will complete their Science Fair investigations and students will hand in their completed Science fair Boards.

Year 9 will study plants this term, carefully inspecting their internal and external structures and how they work. Students will study photosynthesis and the process of making” food” in the plant. They will also study the reproductive process in plants.

Physical Education

Students will explore being active through a variety of International games and tradition or well know games. A focus on personal fitness and goal setting will underpin all lessons.

Key Competencies Relating to Others, Participating and Contributing and Managing Self will be promoted throughout the terms PE programme.

Please make sure your child has their PE gear for each lesson, a towel and trainers/sports shoes as we will be out and about in all weather this term.

Health

Students will continue with “Living in my Strengths” and applying the knowledge gained from the Strengths Explorer assessment and classroom activities. They will have an assessment task to do with a parent or significant adult in their life around their three themes of talent and how this can help them navigate the teenage years and beyond.

‘Shaping Culture Through our Choices – Drugs and Alcohol’ will begin in the latter part of Term 2 and move into Term 3.

It will focus on the following key question: How does culture shape us and how do we influence culture with our decisions and choices as young people?

The Life Education trust will present a drama called “Smashed” in the last week of the term. More information will follow regarding the content.

Mathematics:

The Term 2 topics Number and Algebra.

Number

Students will wrap up operations with fractions, decimals and percentages. They will apply and reason with linear proportions using equivalent fractions and decimals. Students will learn the relative size and place value structure of decimals to three places. Students can find percentages of amounts expressed as whole numbers and decimals and know the equivalent percentage form for everyday fractions.

Algebra

Students work with patterns and relationships – they use graphs, tables and rules to describe linear relationships found in number and spatial patterns. They build expressions and evaluate equations understanding the language of Algebra. Students learn the Distributive Law, how to simplify, use Geometric applications and factorise.
