    Installation

Installation of the Program The hardlock drivers are installed during the program installation. In order to avoid installation problems, plug in the Hardlock upon or after installation. We recommend plugging in the dongle upon software installation. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and exit all applications. If Autostart is activated in your operating system, the installation program is started automatically. If this function is deactivated, start the file SETUP.EXE from the installation CD. Select the language in which you want to work with your software. A setup dialog appears on screen, followed by the welcome dialog. Then choose the product to install: you may select among KIP CO L OR , KIP TWAIN and OU TP U T SU B S Y S TE M . Then choose the installation destination location on your system. Enter the folder you want to install or accept the default. If you are not sure what to choose, do not change the location! Then select a setup type by activating the corresponding radio button. You can select among TY P IC A L , COM P A C T and CU S TOM . If you have opted for the custom setup, you will be prompted to select the components you want to install. Click FIN IS H to complete the setup Program. You will be prompted to select and activate the subsystem and remote scanner. Refer to § OU TP U T SU B S Y S T E M and § RE M O T E SC A N N E R . Now you can start the software from the desktop with the program icon and from the start menu. Make sure that the Windows user accounts have full access to the parameters folder. To get to this folder, follow

the app_data symbolic link in the installation folder. Usually, parameters folders are set under “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\KIP”. To be granted further rights, please ask your system administrator.

Installation of the Hardlock If you have a parallel port (LPT1), simply attach the enclosed hardlock to it. Make sure the arrow on the hardlock is pointing towards the PC port. If a printer is already attached to the parallel port, place the hardlock between the PC port and the printer cable. If you have a USB dongle, put it on after installing the software. A driver will automatically be installed.

Keycode Entry At first start, the software runs in demo mode. Some features are restricted in demo mode. You have to license your software to enable all functions. The keycode you need for licensing your software is part of your software package and consists of letters, numbers and special characters. You can enter your keycode manually or by scanning a keycode target. To enter the kexcode manually proceed as follows:

    • Open up the KIP Color main program • Select IN F O from the menu bar • Select KE Y C O D E EN TR Y • The KE Y C O D E EN T R Y window appears consequently; enter the keycode at the entry field

If you choose to enter the keycode manually, bear in mind it is case sensitive. The fonts will be red until the code is complete and error-free. The speed button OK will be eventually activated. If you want to enter the keycode with a keycode target instead of a keycode, firstly click SC A N TA R G E T in the KE Y C OD E EN T R Y window. Then place the target with the arrow pointing to the scanner and click on SC A N TA R GE T . If the target is obliquely positioned in the scanner, an error message appears and the registration has to be repeated. A gray button means the connection with the scanner has not been effected yet. In this case you will have to enter the keycode manually. The keycode target is always black and white and can thus be sent by fax. However, the dark margins of a fax may disrupt the reading of the keycode target. Should that occur, cut the paper margins along the marked lines and repeat the process. Be aware: you need a keycode corresponding to the versions of your software and dongle. If you do not enter the right keycode, you may not be able to use all functionalities. The necessary details are given in the window KE Y C O D E EN T R Y . After registration the program restarts.

Configuration The next step after licensing the software is to configure your scanners and printers and calibrate your system. The window HA R D W A R E will appear automatically at first start. Later on, go to CON F IG U R A TI ON HA R D W A R E of the KIP Color main screens menu to open the window. Note: Depending on your license, some options and features may not be available

Scanner If a scanner is already connected to your system, its name appears in the upper field. To configure the scanner, please click the LED-icon. The color of the LED-icon shows the current status of the scanner:

    • No response • Warming up • Error • Operational (a light green tone indicates that the document is being transported back)

You get to the dialog for scanner configuration via the LED. Configuration settings are device-dependent.

Tab ICC ICC profiles can be made with special software or are delivered by the scanner’s manufacturer. Please copy these data in the ICC folder of the KIP program. In the tab ICC PR O FI LE , select data for your profiles.

    Printer Installation

Color Calibration for the Copy and RIP Modes There are two basic profiles per print mode and medium:

Copy profile for the Copy mode: scanner, printer and medium are calibrated for the selected print mode. RIP profile for the Import mode: printer and medium are calibrated for the selected print mode.

Highlight a printer in the field AV A I LA B LE PR I N TE R S and click on the red arrow button. Alternatively, you can double-click on the printer. This opens the wizard that will guide you step by step through the configuration and calibration of your printer. Your system can be calibrated in several ways:

The software contains profile libraries for some printers and media. You can import these libraries as described under LIBRARY IMPORT. The calibration is carried out within seconds and you can start printing with your RIP system. Copy-profiles are created with the connected scanner.

You can print targets for RIP profiles to calibrate your system individually with a photospectrometer. Please ask your

    dealer for more details.

If you have a scanner supported by the software, you will be able to print targets on the printer and scan them in. Profiles are created for the Copy and RIP modes. We recommend you use a spectrophotometer. KIP always makes RIP profiles with a spectrophotometer.

The Calibration Dialogs If there are already printers installed, you can directly open the single configuration windows. Right click on a printer under IN S TA L LE D PR IN T E R S , highlight PR IN TE R CO N FI G U R A T I ON and select the configuration dialog you need:

    NA M E / CON N E C T IO N PL A C E M E N T TE C H N I C A L LA B E L DE FI N E ME D IA L I S T CO N FI GU R A T I ON / LO A D E D CO N S U M E A B L E S DE FA U L T OP T IO N S F O R PR IN T SE T T IN GS CA LI B R A TI O N

The Configuration Wizard The Wizard guides you through the configuration and calibration of your printers. Many options of the single dialogs are device-dependent, so some options and settings explained in this chapter may be missing when configuring a printer. You get from one dialog into the other via NE X T . Under AV A I LA B LE PR IN T E R S , highlight a printer type and click on the red arrow or double click the printer. The configuration Wizard opens automatically.

    Name / Connection

Enter the type of connection you are going to use.

Printer name This field allows you to change the name of the printer.

Host Name or TCP/IP Type in the field the name or TCP/IP address of your printer.

    Placement

Trim Lines You may now select TR IM L I N E S which will appear between each copy of the same paper output. They will help you to cut these copies manually.

Nesting If you want to print several copies, and at least two copies fit into the print width, enable NE S TI N G to have the copies automatically printed next to each other.

Distance You can determine the size of the area left between copies under DIS T A N C E .

Max imum Length Define the maximum length of nested copies.

    Rotate

  • KIP Color Advanced/Pro

No part of this publication may be copied, reproduced or distributed in any form without express written permission from KIP. 2015 KIP. v1.

    - 15 -

Without a checkmark at this option pictures are put out with their standard rotation determined by the document. If you check this option, you may choose among different rotations-types to be found in the drop down list. When using AU T OM A TI C (P A P E R S A V E ) , the copy will be rotated so that paper can be saved during output. If you want the output to be rotated without paper-save function, select a rotation degree. They are arranged clockwise.

Alignment Select the corresponding radio buttons if you want to have a LE F T or RI GH T OF FS E T on your print out. Alter the size of the offset to determine the distance between the paper side’s border and image. Select the CE N TE R E D -radio button to set the image to the central position instead.

Rollwidth tolerance If you want to allow print sizes that exceed the print width of your printer, you may define a new tolerated width. Please bear in mind that this may cause a loss of certain areas of the image (especially at the width borders). Technical Label

This option will cause an appearance of a label on each copy. Labels are shown close to the copy and inform about various settings. You can determine which piece of information the standard label will contain by checking the corresponding boxes. Configuration / Loaded Consumables

As the calibration is media-dependent, you have to put in the paper types and ink types set in the printer. Printers can be equipped with different numbers of paper rolls. You get to the dialog DE FI N E ME D I A L IS T via the button ED I T ME D I A .

If you do not use original media, edit the medium/media you use via ED I T ME D IA . This is important as the color profiles provided by KIP are made for original media only.

    Define Media List

You get to this dialog automatically with the configuration Wizard, but also from the HA R D W A R E window when you open the context menu of an installed printer and select PR IN TE R CO N FI GU R A T I ON DE FI N E ME D I A LI S T , or when you click the button ED I T ME D I A in the configuration dialog CON F IG U R A T IO N / LOA D E D CO N S U M A B LE S . Select the paper types you want to work with. If you do not use original paper or other original media from the manufacturer, define your own media: check the box "US E R D E F IN E D 1" , open the context menu, Highlight OP TI ON S and define the medium you use. You may need to put in the paper type loaded in the printer. CANON printers often make this entry necessary. Enter the paper type according to the specifications of the media or printer manufacturer. Wrong printer or software settings can lead to loss of quality! To get the list of all medium types and be able to edit user-defined media, click SH OW A L L . To edit your own media, check a box US E R D E F IN E D , select OP T IO N S in the context menu and enter the necessary settings.

    Default Settings for Print Options

Determine the default settings for the connected printer. You can set, for example, the dpi value, as well as trimming and drying options. If you need further settings, click the button EX P E R T . The dialog is device-dependent. In order to save a settings profile, simply click the button SAV E MO D E and choose a specific name for the settings profile. In order to load previously saved profiles, click the button MA N A GE that only appears after successfully saving a profile. Select the profile of interest from the selection window. PostScript

Monochrome PDF / PostScript Processing (Only for B+W files) Additional dither modes and parameter settings.

Minimum line width Specify the minimum line width. With 0,00 mm the default within the file will be used.

Apply transparencies Check this box to use the settings within the file.

    Calibration for Copy

Media calibrations for the copy mode are created and displayed in this window. Media calibrations apply to the selected medium and print mode and are a set of color and, when necessary, gray calibrations, ink-limit and gamma settings, length and width corrections. The medium displayed in the calibration window is that one you set in the window CON F IG U R A TI ON / LOA D E D CO N S U M A B LE S . As a default, the program only displays the print modes recommended by KIP. If you want to calibrate further modes, click the button EX P E R T to get the list of all available print modes.

The options available in this dialog are described under OPTIONS IN THE CALIBRATION DIALOG FOR COPY AND RIP. When a profile has been successfully applied to the selected print mode, the date of creation appears after the medium name.

Library Import The software contains profile libraries of calibrations applicable to most printers and common media. Load the appropriate libraries by clicking IM P OR T L IB R A R Y and the corresponding printer, and select the desired filters. Confirm with OK . These calibration targets presuppose the use of original media with your printer.

    Export to Library If you highlight a calibrated printer and click EX P OR T T O L I B R A R Y , a profile will be generated with the printer-specific filters.

Printing the Targets Different targets are available for printing according to the selected output options and media types. Select the print modes you want to calibrate your system with, and click PR IN T TA R GE T to print the targets on the selected printer. Targets are made of multiple areas surrounded by a white frame, trim lines and a print label.

Scanning the Targets Scan the targets you have printed on your printer. When scanned in, the targets are automatically assigned to the print modes they are made for and can be thus scanned in in any order. Do not forget that some combinations of ink type and print media may require some drying time! Please cut the targets at the trim lines so that they are hardly visible. Do not cut off the white frame. You can then scan the

targets in any order. Insert the target into the scanner with the arrow pointing towards the device and click on SC A N TA R GE T .

After a successful calibration, the date of calibration appears in the window behind the selected combination. Repeat the process with all targets. Click on NE X T to get to the RIP calibration. If there is no NE X T button, but one FIN IS H , at least one RIP calibration has been done and the wizard can be closed. You can calibrate further RIP modes by selecting the corresponding dialog.

    Calibration for RIP

Media calibrations for the import or RIP modes are created and displayed in this window. Media calibrations apply to the selected medium and print mode and are a set of color and gray calibrations, ink-limit and gamma settings, length and width corrections. The medium displayed in the calibration window is that one you set in the window CON F IG U R A TI ON / LO A D E D CO N S U M A B LE S . As a default, the program only displays the print modes recommended by KIP. If you want to calibrate further modes, click the button EX P E R T to get the list of all available print modes. The options available in this dialog are described under OPTIONS IN THE CALIBRATION DIALOG.

When a profile has been successfully applied to the selected print mode, the date of creation appears after the medium name.

Import from Profile Library With this function you can import calibrations that were made on another system. Open the printer-specific profile library and select the desired filters. Please consider that the included profile libraries are made for original media from the printer's

manufacturer. If you use different media or feel the quality of the print is not satisfying, please read on in chapter EDIT MEDIA PARAMTERS before proceeding with the calibration.

Export to Library You can save single or all RIP profiles applying to one given printer type.

Download Libraries If you need libraries, you will be able to download some from the KIP Web site. Follow the hints online to select and download libraries.

Scanner / Spectrophotometer Select the device to be calibrated. We recommend calibration with a spectrophotometer.

Print Target Check the boxes of the targets you want to print, and click on PR IN T TA R GE T . The targets will be printed on the printer you’ve selected.

Measure Target Scan the targets with your scanner or spectrophotometer. If you use a scanner or a GretagMacbeth ICColor, the targets will be automatically assigned to their corresponding print modes. That way, there is no defined order for scanning the targets. Some spectrophotometers may not assign targets to their print modes. In that case, you will be prompted to give in the 6 figures you find on the left at the bottom of the targets.

Some combinations of ink and medium may require some extra drying time!

Edit media parameters Under certain circumstances, for example when you do not use original media, it may be necessary to change the default media parameters IN K-L IM I T or GA M M A .

These settings may be necessary for each copy mode! Media parameters should be edited in the order listed below. However, not all steps may be necessary. 1. Define Ink-limit 2. Define Gamma 3. Make grayscale calibration 4. Linearization 1 Ink-limit and Gamma (tab GE N E R A L ) Print a test page via PR IN T T E S T S H E E T . Adjust the ink-limit until all gray areas in the lower part are clearly visible. The gray areas should not fade out.

Change the Gamma value until, in the upper part of the print, the brightness of 50% Gray is exactly in the middle of the range between 100% White and 100% Black. To check the settings, print a scanner-calibration-target and look at the colors. If the colors fade out, or if you can see color droplets, please reduce the ink-limit value via ED IT M E D I A P A R A M E TE R S . Then, print a new target and check the colors. 2 No Black Ink When available, this option allows you to print without black ink. This option is possible for various printer types and media (e.g. glossy paper) as some ink types do not dry on certain media. 3 Gray Calibration A gray calibration may help reduce color shifts in gray areas. To make a gray calibration, proceed as follows: 1. Check the box MOD I FY D E F A U L T GR A Y V A L U E . 2. Click PR IN T TA R G E T to get a calibration target. 3. Cut out the black & white mask on the left of the target along the trim lines and take the square out of the center. 4. With the mask, find the most neutral gray tone within each level and enter the corresponding coordinates in the window. 5. Check the new settings via PR IN T T E S T S H E E T .

Edit size correction During color calibration, correction factors for width and length are calculated. These factors can be changed manually, for example in the rare case when the automatic size recognition fails to work. Proceed as follows: 1. Set the value for the width and height correction to 100. 2. Print the file and calculate the difference between the sizes of original and copy. 3. Use the rule of three to calculate the correction factor. Example: the original has a height of 120mm; the copy has a height of 126mm. The correction factor is calculated as follows: 120 / 1.26 = 95.2381 Values between 90 and 110 are applicable.

Delete Calibration The saved size correction for the selected print mode will be deleted.

Measure Target with Spectrophotometer If you can read the target with a spectrophotometer, start the reading process with this option.

Import ICC Profile You may use profiles created without KIP Color Pro spectrophotometer options. Please specify the file here.

Cost Tracking Coster tracker is an important tool for billing copies or making statistics. When C OS T TR A C K I N G is activated, the most important data will be saved in a log file, which can be renamed under FIL E N A M E . This data can be encrypted and easily exported to Excel to be reprocessed. The Excel file will be stored in the same folder as the account log file. For the processing of Excel spreadsheets, Excel must be installed on your PC! An arbitrary number of customer names can be entered for later billing. Depending on how the data is to be reprocessed, we recommend opening several log files, e.g. one per day or per month or until the next billing date.

User Administration New user accounts with various rights can be created as necessary in this dialog. Please note that, after installation, a user with the symbolic name "_" is logged on with all administrators’ rights. You will be prompted to replace this user key with your own account. KIP Color’s Main Window

General KIP Color’s main window is divided into four parts: At the top, you will find the menu bar and the mode buttons:

COP Y – Copy mode (the picture is scanned, and printed) RIP – RIP mode (an archived file is selected and printed) SC A N – Scan-to-file mode (a picture is scanned, and saved as a file) EM A I L – Scan-to-e-mail mode (a picture is scanned, then saved as a file and sent in an e-mail) In the left part of the window, you will see the fields with the output options of the selected mode. In the right part of the window, if the selected mode allows it, you will be able to have a preview of the file or scan:

In copy and RIP mode, a roll preview is shown under the picture preview. This way, you will be able to see the disposition of the images on the print roll:

The used paper size is shown above the preview. At the bottom line, the following pieces of information are displayed: the pointer position in the preview, the output size, and, in the case of an AOI, the size of the selected area.

    Preview

Scan Preview The preview has to be recalculated as soon as sizes are changed in the tab GE N E R A L or if you use a new original.

Select an Area An arbitrary area can be defined from the preview: this is the “AOI” or area of interest. The size of the defined area is entered as the COP Y SI Z E in the tab GE N E R A L . To set an area of interest, draw a rectangle around the desired section, keeping the left mouse button pressed. The AOI can be enlarged or reduced in any direction. To do this, move the mouse pointer to an edge of the rectangle so that a double-arrow appears. Move this arrow in the height or width. To move the AOI to a new position, click into the AOI and move it, keeping the left mouse button pressed.

Automatic Deskew (Neither in RIP mode nor in the archive) This function enables you to adjust a skewed image. When the function is enabled, KIP Color determines a reference line or edge in the scanned document to deskew it. This option can be applied to documents with a maximum askewness of 5°.

It may be useful to increase the scan width so as to prevent information loss.

Reset AOI Setting This function cancels the AOI. The complete image is displayed again.

    Zoom to AOI/Cropping

With this function, only the selected area is displayed in the print preview. If you click on ZO OM T O AOI/CR O P P I N G once more, the AOI is displayed in a higher resolution.

Click the button SC A N PR E V IE W to have the AOI displayed in a higher resolution.

    Automatic Filter

(not available in RIP mode) When you use a predefined filter, a prescan will be calculated before the actual scanning process starts. The length of the prescan can be determined under CON FI G U R A TI ON PR E FE R E N C E S GE N E R A L (see chapter PREFERENCES). You can choose among the following automatic filters:

Prints This is a universal automatic mode for different mixed originals such as brochures with photos and text. The black point is set lower than in the maps mode in order to prevent distortions. As a consequence, text will be less dark.

Maps This mode is best suited for maps with rastered areas of color and text (without pictures). Good text reproduction is achieved through a high black point correction.

Photos We recommend this setting for photographic originals. Using this automatic mode, a careful black and white point correction is set. The picture will not be edited with sharpeners or softeners.

Lineart Color Apply this mode to pure lineart (technical drawings) for an accurate reproduction of edge sharpness.

CAD-Plots This filter is best suited for originals that have been printed on an inkjet printer.

    No Filter, Color

No filter is needed. There will be no prescan.

Brightness You may alter the brightness of a copy with the brightness slider. When using normal originals, we recommend setting the value of the slider to 0. Moving the slider to the left (negative values) will result in a copy darker than the scanned original, whereas moving the slider to the right (positive values) will make a brighter copy. Clicking on the button RE S E T will reset the slider to its original position.

Use Color Management (only in RIP mode) If you want to work with the color management, check the box US E CO LO R MA N A GE M E N T and, if necessary, select an ICM profile by clicking on the speed button in the same field. The dialog CO L OR MA N A GE M E N T OP T IO N S will open. You may select profiles for RGB- and CMYK . Embeded Profiles are used by default (check box US E E M B E D E D PR O FI L E S ). If no profiles are embeded in the file, the option from the dropdown menu is used. If you prefere an special profile instead of the standard ones you can select ICM file and specify the path in the box below. RE N D E R IN G IN TE N T In general, actual device gamuts will not be large enough to reproduce the desired color appearances communicated by the PCS values. Four rendering intents (gamut mapping styles) are provided to address this problem. Each one represents a different compromise. The colorimetric rendering intents operate on measurement-based colorimetric values... The other rendering intents operate on colorimetric values which are corrected in an as-needed fashion to account for any differences between devices, media, and viewing conditions.

PE R C E P TU A L The exact gamut mapping of the perceptual intent is vendor specific and involves compromises such as trading off preservation of contrast in order to preserve detail throughout the tonal range. It is useful for general reproduction of images, particularly pictorial or photographic-type images. RE LA T IV E (Colormetric Intent) This intent re-scales the in-gamut, tristimulus values such that the white point of the actual medium is mapped to the PCS white point (for either input or output). It is useful for colors that have already been mapped to a medium with a smaller gamut than the reference medium (and therefore need no further compression). SA TU R A T IO N This intent sets brighter colors by neglecting the color fidelity. AB S O LU T E (Colormetric Intent) For this intent, the tristimulus values of the in-gamut colors are unchanged. It is useful for spot colors and when simulating one medium on another (proofing).

CMYK Direct (only in RIP mode) With Color Management off you can use CMYK direct. For CMYK files the values will be directly given to the printer. For RGB files a conversation will be done internally.

    Tab Advanced

If you have once selected settings under OU TP U T OP TI ON S , those same settings will be automatically applied to all documents unless they are changed or cancelled. To reset settings to their initial values, open the FIL E menu and select RE S E T .

Additionally save raster file (only in Copy mode) When working in copy mode, you may save the raster file on your hard drive/system. Simply set a checkmark at the tab’s first option AD D I T I ON A L LY S A V E R A S TE R F I LE . You may now select the FILE FOR M A T raster files are saved in, as well as the FI LE NA M E and save location. If you want to select additional file settings (e.g. in order to set up compression, quality, etc.), just click the button OP T IO N S . By activating IN C R E M E N T F I L E NA M E every copy of the even named file will get an individual file name. By contrast, you may select WR I TE MU L T IP A GE F I LE in order to create a round up raster file including all the copy images recently created

Margins You can set additional white margins, whose size can individually be set for the left, right, top and bottom. Bear in mind that the maximum print width of the initial copy decreases by the size of the margins. For example, if you want a continuous white margin of 20 mm, just activate BOR D E R S EQ U A L and set the left margin to 20 mm.

Mirroring Check the box MIR R O R I N G if you need a mirror image of the copy.

Label Additional information can be entered for the label (e.g. customer, employee). You have the possibility of using the history for frequently used label entries. The standard label is configured in the tab LA B E L you reach with CON F I GU R A T IO N PR E FE R E N C E S . The label will be printed on a line at the document top.

Rotate (only in RIP mode) If you want the output to be rotated without paper-save function, put in a rotation degree. RO T A TE is disabled if you have used the automatic size recognition for scanning or if you work with an anisotropic printer.

Tab Paneling For large format outputs, such as posters or presentations for fairs and exhibitions, it is necessary to divide the copy into several different panels. As soon as the required output size exceeds the maximum print width or the maximum print length of a printer, certain settings become necessary under PA N E LI N G .

Panel Size (Width/Height) You can choose to print panels in the width, in the height, or both. To do this, check the box(es) WID T H and/or HE IGH T . Enter then either a fixed size or a number of panels. If you used the automatic length recognition when scanning, a paneling with respect to height is not possible.

Calculate Paneling is designed for easy use: KIP Color calculates the number and maximum size of the panels that will fit on the paper width, including the overlap (if selected). Simply click CA LC U LA TE . The maximum print width of the selected printer is then entered under SIZE GIV E N , while the number of panels is displayed under COU N T GIV E N . If you change the output size or the output device in the main window, you must click on the button CA LC U LA TE once again to recalculate the size and number of panels. The values are then immediately updated. Of course, you may change the suggested values manually.

Example The poster you want to print is supposed to be 4000 mm wide but the maximum output width of the printer is 900 mm. * If you enter "900 mm" under SI ZE GIV E N (width), four 900 mm wide panels and a 400 mm wide one will be printed. * If you enter "5" under COU N T GIV E N , five 800 mm wide panels will be printed.

Select Panels for the Output If you choose to print an image with panels, you will see their distribution, including the overlap, in the preview after activating the tab Panel ing .

The preview of the panels is also possible in combination with the area of interest (AOI).

You have the option to print single panels. Each panel is displayed with a magenta-colored border. To activate or deactivate the panels, just click on the desired panels.

Overlap You can print with overlaps. Overlaps are added on the right side of the wid
