Obituary Calvin Kirby, Sr., the son of the late Robert and Bessie Livingston Kirby, was born February 23, 1924 in Anson County, North Carolina. He departed this life on February 18, 2008 surrounded by the love of his family. Calvin received his early education in the Anson County Public School System. He later served in the Navy during Word War II and was honorably discharged. Calvin was always good with his hands and a lover of cars. He worked with the L.P. Stuart car dealership until he became self-employed. Calvin owned and operated Kirby’s Auto Repair where he provided service to numerous customers in the Washington Metropolitan Area until his retirement. At an early age Calvin joined Red Hill Baptist Church in North Carolina. He was later baptized at the Way of the Cross Church under the late Henry Chauncey Brooks. In 1969 he became a member of Holy Temple Church of Christ under the leadership of Bishop Joseph Weathers where he served as a deacon and an usher. He also sang in the Men’s Chorus, as well as the Amalgamated Chorus. Calvin was also a member of the Golden Age Club. Calvin married Shirley Rowena, who preceded him in death in 1954. He was also preceded in death by his two daughters Gloria and Deborah. He was esteemed and well loved by his children: Ann Tisdale, James Pemberton, Calvin, Jr., Karen, Greta, Corwin Kirby, and Latricia Agbemashior. Calvin leaves to cherish his memory, his children; two sisters, Jessie and Catherine; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Above all, Calvin was a good and decent man who always had a broad smile and quick wit. We remember that life calls for celebration and joy, thus the tears we shed are for ourselves for we will deeply miss him.

A Family Poem

Our family circle is broken, A link is gone from our chain,

But though we parted for awhile We know we will meet again;

Sometimes it’s hard to understand That certain things must be,

But there is a reason for it all Beyond our power to see;

The cover of life’s book is closed For one we love so well,

But loving deeds from by gone days Are what the pages tell;

Peaceful be thy rest It’s sweet to say your name

We loved you dearly in life So in death we do the same

The Family
