From the Manse . . . In the magazine this month, you will find a leaflet on Pastoral Care in Kirkgate Church.

This leaflet explains what pastoral care is and how it works in our congregation. As Christians, we are not exempt from difficulties or sorrows and God does not want us to carry our burdens alone. Carrying one another’s burdens is part of the ministry of the Church and it is a ministry, which involves every member. So we should look out for one another and listen well, taking a sensitive interest in one another’s lives, offering prayer and practical help as needed.

Kirkgate is blessed to have a hard working Pastoral Care Committee that keeps in touch with people, arranging visits for those who are sick and housebound. They also keep me (as your minister) informed about people who need a visit – at home or in hospital. The Pastoral Care Team is one of the ways in which we as a congregation strive to carry one another’s burdens, but we rely on you to keep us updated about your friends and neighbours from the congregation who need support or a visit. This is especially important when it comes to hospital visiting, as visiting clergy no longer have access to in-patient lists at local hospitals. This means that the Minister and Pastoral Visitors only find out someone is in hospital when a relative, friend or neighbour lets us know.

This is why the names of our pastoral contacts (Miss Alison Buick: 01294 464531 and Mrs Morag Forsyth: 01294 463762) are printed in the intimations every week, and the magazine every month. And you can always get in touch with me directly. Even if you have to leave a message, I will call you back as soon as I can or you can send me an email at: [email protected]

The Pastoral Care Committee are always ready to widen the scope of their home visiting. So if you would like to op in for home visits, please do get in touch with me. If you are able to join our team of visitors, I would also be happy to hear from you. You just need to be someone with a listening ear, who can extend the hand of support and friendship to another member of our congregation.

I hope you find the leaflet helpful, if you have any questions about it or about pastoral care issue, please do get in touch with me.

I wish you a warm and peaceful summertime. Details about my holiday arrangements and about the summer pulpit exchange can be found on page 7.

Blessings

Dorothy (01294 463571)

Loving Creator God, let nature find a space to flourish in your Church

Make us ever mindful of the threat of climate change, and

May the agreements made in Paris become a reality in your world

COUNCIL FOR WORLD MISSION CALLS FOR PRAYERS AFTER CLIMATE DEAL REACHED AT UNITED NATIONS SUMMIT IN PARIS

A PRAYER FOR THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Thank You, Lord for the times of refreshment and opportunities for all who go away on holiday or holiday at home – so that they may be renewed in body soul and spirit.

And Lord, we particularly thank You for this lovely summer holiday time and pray that You would be with us as we spend time away from the hustle and bustle of the work-a-day week and take time to rest awhile.

Lord, it was You who reminded Your own disciples that they needed times of refreshment from the stresses and strains of the day and we thank You for this opportunity to enjoy different and new experiences. May our time away be one of warmth and love and filled with fun and fellowship. May our hearts overflow with Your joy and peace and may we fill our lungs with laughter.

Watch over all who journey far and near and as we travel, protect us from all difficulties and dangers.

May we rest in You and return refreshed in body soul and spirit to Your praise and glory, in Jesus name we pray,

AMEN

A PRAYER FOR YOU

I said a prayer for you today,

And know God must have heard

I felt the answer in my heart

Although he spoke no word

I didn’t ask for wealth or fame

(I knew you wouldn’t mind )

I asked Him to send treasures of

A far more lasting kind

I asked that He’d be near you

At the start of each new day

To grant you health and blessings

And friends to share your way

I asked for happiness for you

In all things great and small

But it was for His loving care

I prayed for most of all

AMEN

World Mission

This year the World Mission Council report to the General Assembly focused on the theme of Care for Creation and our partners around the world are reporting on how they understand our place in creation.

In Malawi and in South Africa there is special emphasis on the bonding of a child with the place of its birth. In Bolivia the legislative Assembly passed a law stating that the natural world has rights equivalent to human rights. For the next 3 years the Guild will be supporting Christian Aid’s ‘Caring for mother earth in Bolivia’ as one of their projects.

Walking 70 Munros taught Christian Aid’s Wendy Young a little about care for creation and a lot about how cre-ation cares.

Land is sacred to the Palestinians and the editor of WM went to visit Daod Nassar a Palestinian Christian and the owner of Daher’s vineyard, the Tent of Nations. They feel they belong to the ground. The land is part of their identity.

In India women church leaders and delegates to the conference in Nagpur pledged to nurture sister trees and protect mother Earth. An eco-pilgrimage was organised at dawn and the delegates worshipped in the midst of nature in the open air and offered their prayers to heal their relationship with mother Earth. 50 Mango trees were gifted and planted in the garden as a symbolic gesture and a commitment to work to prevent climate change.

This summer, I will be visiting Canada. I have only been there once before for two hours, so I am looking forward to a rather more extended visit this time around. The trip will be in two parts: from 15th July-1st August, I will be on holiday with my family. We plan to visit Niagara Falls, Algonquin National Park and then to do a road trip taking in some specific sights and cities.

Then, from 2nd -17th August, Dave and I will be staying in St Catharines, Ontario where I will be doing a pulpit exchange with the Rev. Cherie Inksetter, pastor of St. Giles Presbyterian Church: www.stgilesstcatharines.ca

While I am on holiday, Mr Andrew Bruce will be providing pulpit cover (17th, 24th and 31st July). Andrew will also provide pastoral cover during that time.

For the period of the Pulpit Exchange, Rev Cherie Inksetter will be leading worship on 7th and 14th August. Cherie will also cover any pastoral emergencies and Mr Bert McCool will cover funerals. Ongoing pastoral care will be provided by the Pastoral Care Committee, via the usual contact numbers in the weekly intimation sheets. The contact details are also on the leaflet inside this month’s magazine.

Rev Cherie InksetterI thought you might like to know a little bit about Cherie so you can welcome her to the congregation in August. She flies in to Glasgow on 2nd August and I will make arrangements for someone to meet her at the airport. Cherie will live in the manse while she is in Scotland, so she can be contacted on the manse landline (01294 463571).

Cherie grew up in the Niagara Peninsula and prior to entering the ministry, she owned and managed Carluke Orchards in Ancaster with her family, a Bakery, Gift Store and Gourmet Food Market, which prides itself on having one of the best pick-your-own orchards in the area. Cherie has three amazing children, who give her great joy (and only a few headaches) and two grand-puppies.

Cherie also has a rich academic background, having studied psychology, sociology and religious studies at McMaster University. She holds a Master of Divinity from Knox College, Presbyterian Church in Canada (PCC) Seminary and has also taken courses on missional churches; conflict resolution and pastoral education.

Cherie has been the pastor at St. Giles Presbyterian Church since May of 2012 and she considers herself blessed to have landed in such a welcoming, fun family of faith. St. Giles is a mid-sized church (by PCC) standards, with a membership of just over 200. Since Cherie arrived in 2012, the church has welcomed 64 new members and their Sunday School and Youth Groups have grown accordingly (perhaps she can tell us how she managed this).

I know I can rely on you all to make Cherie feel welcome in Kirkgate Church. As well as church stuff, Cherie hopes to see a bit of Scotland while she is here and to do some studying. So please offer her any help and hospitality she requires. I am sure it will be a great blessing for Kirkgate to have Cherie among us in our 150th anniversary year.

Have a great summer everyone.

Blessings, Dorothy

Congratulations Flowers and best wishes were sent to Ina Irvine, Seabank Care Home, Saltcoats who celebrated her 100th Birthday with a party on Monday 9th May 2016. Doesn’t she look wonderful pictured here thoroughly enjoying all the attention. Betty McCracken who visits Ina regularly managed to take this photo of her having a glass of bubbly with strawberries floating it her glass. There were pupils from Auchenharvie Academy at the party and some of them were dancing with the residents and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Congratulations Ina from all at Kirkgate.

St Benedict’s School - Stain Glass Window Competition

Olin Davies, grandson of Solveig McCulloch, and son of her youngest daughter Alison & Keith Davies, was awarded 1st prize in recognition of his art work when designing a stain glass window for the school which he attends in London. Below is Olin’s design along with the local stained glass artist Sophie D’Souza’s finished interpretation of Olin’s drawing.

During the Michaelmas half-term pupils from across the Middle School took part in a competition to design the Stained Glass Window that will occupy the new school chapel in the Senior School. The children were invited to look at the importance of colour and Christian symbol to express in their design the Ten Essentials of a Benedictine School. The design needed to explore different Christian themes such as humility, love of God, the Holy Spirit, hospitality, and creation, which are represented by different colours and symbols in art. The children were invited to consider the stained glass windows designed by Matisse as a way of expressing their design.

Over a hundred pupils entered the competition, which was judged by a local stained glass artist – Sophie D’Souza – who will make the winning entry into our final window. The quality of entries made the task of judging very difficult indeed. The first prize, whose design will become the final window in the chapel, was won by Olin Davies (F3B) who is 11 years old and he is seen here being presented with his award from Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster.

Well done to Olin who is obviously following in mum Alison’s and Gran Solveig’s footsteps of being very artistic.

Incidentally, Olin was baptised by Rev Sandy McCallum in New Trinity Church on Sandy’s last service before his retirement, Easter Sunday 27th March 2005.

The GuildThe trip to Rosslyn Chapel was a very interesting day out and everyone enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Ray for organising everything.

The Guild will organise a theatre outing to the Gaiety in November if there is sufficient interest. This year the show is ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’, perhaps unknown to some, but members of the cast like it. The date for the matinee is Saturday 12th November and tickets are priced £17. So that we can gauge interest, please add your name to the list on the table in the hallway where you will also find a short review of the show. 10+ constitutes a block booking which we would need to book by the end of June to get priority seats. For more information please contact Alison Buick 464531.

Keep FitAfter our walk along the promenade between Saltcoats and Ardrossan in lovely summer weather on Monday 6th June, we now take a break over the summer months.

Thank you to the 15-20 ladies who turn up so faithfully every Monday and because of you we are able to add the sum of £306.50 to church funds which has been raised from the New Year until now.

We will meet again on Monday 12th September at 10.00 a.m. in the large hall. Anyone wishing to join us will be made very welcome. Have a great summer! Solveig McCulloch

Congratulations continued...

Congratulations and flowers were sent to Gordon & Elizabeth McMahon of Kennedy Road, Saltcoats on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Anniversary which they celebrated quietly on Wednesday 1st June 2016. They were very happy to be surrounded by many family and friends when they held a party on Saturday 4th June which was enjoyed by all. Best wishes for many more happy years together.

Keith and Liz Clark were delighted and proud to learn that their eldest grandson Daniel had been awarded Master of Physics, with Honours, First Class at Edinburgh University. His graduation ceremony will be held on Wednesday 29th June 2016. We send best wishes to Daniel for his achievment and wish him well in his future career.

We send congratulations to Sandra Craig of Strathclyde Avenue, who along with her partner Frances Cunningham won the Scottish Doubles Dominoe Championship which was held at Airdrie on Sunday 5th June 2016. Well done Sandra & Frances.

Kirk Session News

150th Anniversary Events

The Kirk Session met on Thursday, 9th June 2016.

Mima McSwan agreed to continue as our Representative Elder at Presbytery, but intimated that this would be her last year.

The Brownies and Guides had sent letters asking to use our premises for a sleepover on Fri 17th June and Tabletop Sale on Sat 9th July respectively, and these were approved.

There was no finance report this month, but a summary of the Stewardship Gathering was given - see page 14 for more information on that event.

As always, property dominated the meeting’s agenda and Mima’s report can be found on page 17.

The Pastoral Care Committee have produced a Pastoral Care leaflet which is included with this magazine.

Three vinyl banners have been produced for use at Coffee Mornings, the Christmas Fair and the forthcoming organ recitals in July.

The minister gave details of her summer holidays and pulpit exchange programme with Rev Cherie Insketter from Ontario, Canada. More details of that on page 7.

The retiring offering for the June Communion will go to Borderline - a London-based charity supporting homeless Scots in the city. Continuing with the homeless theme, it was also agreed that our Harvest Project this year would be in aid of the Glasgow City Mission.

On Sunday 5th June we were delighted to welcome Rev Barry Dunsmore as our guest preacher. Barry’s first charge was as minister of the former Erskine Church from 1982-1988, and has since been minister at Stirling St Columba’s, London St Columba’s, Christ Church Bermuda and recently returned to Aberdeen to become minster at St Machar’s Cathedral.

We were also delighted to welcome his family members, shown below (left - right), sister Carol & her husband Brian, Barry’s mother Mildred, wife Hilda and Hilda’s mother Jessie Burns.

150th Anniversary Events

Forthcoming 150th Anniversary Events

On Wednesday 27th April we were entertained by a concert party of ladies from Dreghorn Musical Society, under the musical directorship of Stephen Cowan. It was a varied and most enjoyable evening for all who attended.

A few spaces are still available for our special church outing to the Trossachs on Saturday 2nd July to celebrate our 150th Anniversary. The cost is £26.50 (Adults) and £25.00 (Concessions).

We’ll have a short stop at The Lodge, Aberfoyle before going for a 1-hour sail on the Sir Walter Scott on Loch Katrine, after which we’ll head to Callander for a 2-course meal. Return home approx 8pm.

If you still wish to attend please contact me ASAP to check on availability. Tel: 01294 603848. Mob: 07588 665191 or email [email protected]

On Sunday 10th July at 10.45am we will be holding a special 150th Anniversary Service, which will probably take the shape of a “Songs of Praise” service.

From Monday 11th - Saturday 16th July, there will be a daily 30-minute organ recital at 12 noon by either myself or Jim Grant. These are intended to be very informal - just pop in to hear one piece or stay and wander about whilst listening to it all. You can even bring your lunch with you if you so desire! A few volunteers for door duty each day would be appreciated.

On Saturday 6th August at 11am we’ll be holding an Open Air Ecumenical Service at the front of the church (weather permitting) Stuart McMahon

I was again a Commissioner to this year’s General Assembly held from 21-27th May 2016. The Assembly was conducted in a worshipful atmosphere by the Moderator, the Right Rev Dr Russell Barr (Edinburgh, Cramond Kirk) the Church of Scotland’s roving Ambassador for the next twelve months. The theme for the Assembly was “People of the Way” – a reminder of how we all come together in Christ from all over the world; how God is always walking with us, and that he will be there to meet us at our journey’s end.

Two very different matters threatened to overshadow the Assembly this year. First, the ongoing issue of Ministers in same-sex relationships. On its opening morning, the Assembly voted to allow churches to call ministers in same-sex marriages. Although the Church still holds to the traditional Christian understanding of marriage, individual Kirk sessions, when calling a minister, may now decide that they are open to appointing someone in a formalised same-sex relationship (Civil Partnership or marriage). The Theological Commission will now bring a report on the theology of same-sex relations to the 2017 Assembly for discussion and consideration.

The second matter came out of left field and it concerned issues of process and governance arising from the appointments of husband and wife Martin and Jayne Scott to senior posts in Church administration. After a lengthy debate, the Rev Dr Martin Scott’s nomination as the new Secretary to the Council of Assembly was

ratified by the Assembly. A proposal to appoint a special committee to review the processes, which led to his wife Jayne being appointed as his successor as Secretary of the Ministries Council, was rejected by the Assembly.

As always, the reports from the individual Councils and Committees of the Church were challenging and stimulating, and testimony to the tremendous amount of work, which is carried out in Scotland and around the world. The particular work of CrossReach was (as always) warmly commended, as was the wide variety of the caring work they undertake helping vulnerable teenagers, children, and families, and being Scotland’s largest nursing home provider.

For me, there were two particular highlights from the 2016 General Assembly. First, the ratification of the historic Columba Declaration, which brings the Church of Scotland into a much closer working relationship with the Church of England. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby took part in the debate and he addressed the Assembly on issues of unity, and oneness in the Lord Jesus Christ.

My second highlight was the Report of the Committee on Chaplains to Her Majesty’s Forces, reaffirming the support of the Church for Chaplains to the forces and their families. The desire of the Forces to have Chaplains is as strong now as it ever was.

There are many other things I could report on, as the Assembly covers a tremendous amount of ground: from the state of our pensions, loans and investments; to the depths of our engagement in the ministry and mission of the Church. This year, there was also a celebration of 50 years of the ordination of women to the eldership and the richness of the contribution women elders make to the Church. And, the Guild held a Big Sing. If you want to know more about these, or the General Assembly in general, please do come and chat to me.

Despite the heat in the hall and the extraordinary length of the sessions, it was good to be there and to see the General Assembly at work. I enjoyed catching up with friends and colleagues from across the country, sharing in daily worship together, and talking about the challenges of ministry in the 21st century. I left Edinburgh feeling hopeful about the future, but also very aware of how much needs to change - both locally and nationally - in the months and years ahead.

Ardrossan Presbytery met on Tuesday 14th June in West Kilbride Parish Church.

The meeting started by celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion, after which the ordinary business was conducted.

Business Commitee: Notice has been received from Rev Arthur Sherratt, Saltcoats St Cuthbert’s intimating his retirement on July 31st. Rev David Watson will continue as the Interim Moderator at St Cuthbert’s but Vacancy Procedures were sisted pending a report from the Appraisal Committee.

Stewardship, Finance and Property Committee: A reduction in the M&M contributions, funded from the 5% Presbytery M&M reserve was approved. Kirkgate’s contribution will be reduced by £1,146.

West Kilbride Parish Church received approval for new glass panelled doors and wooden storm doors.

Lamlash Parish Church received approval to install a new heating system in the manse.

Largs St John’s received approval to refurbish their kitchen area at a cost of around £36,000.

Beith Parish Church sought approval to apply for a grant from Heritage Lottery for essential works totalling £258,612. The maximum grant available would be less than this but they intend to raise the balance from other funders and the congregation.

Largs St Columba’s received approval for stonework repairs costing around £30,693 to stop some water ingress.

Kirkgate Parish Church gained approval in principle for our refurbishment works, in order that competitive tenders can be procured.

Treasurers should be aware of a revaluation of Church Properties and it is likely that appeals will have to be lodged by 30th Sept. If sufficient congregations require advice, a suitable Surveyor with local knowledge may be appointed to act for all who require assistance.

The Private Housing (Tenancies) (Scotland) Act passed in March 2016 has major implications for the letting of manses. Congregations should be aware of the changes.

Mission Committee: Rev David Watson gave a report on the proposed Twinning Agreement with Milala Presbytery in Malawi.

Appraisal Committee: It was agreed to allow the congregations of Cumbrae l/w Largs St John’s (under the guidance of the Vacancy Procedure Committee) to begin the search for their next minister, with the proviso that they also consider the timing of the recruitment of a 0.5 MDS, and that this MDS appointment should be an associate minister, an assistant minister or a deacon; available to conduct regular Public Worship.

It was agreed to extend the right to call (until December 2016) the charges of Stevenston Ardeer l/w Livingstone, and Kilwinning Mansefield Trinity.

Ministry & Superintendence Committee: Local Church Review reports were received from Largs Clark Memorial Church, Kilwinning Old and Lamlash l/w Kilmory and their Kirk Sessions were commended for their ongoing encouragement and future planning.

It was noted that Mrs Aileen Brookens will undertake her first placement in training for the readership with Rev Angus Adamson, and Mr Brian Murray will undertake his first placement with Rev Scott Cameron.

Stewardship Gathering

I am a great fan of Westerns, particularly older ones. On numerous occasions it seems that the townsfolk or pioneers are gathered in the white painted town church or at a graveside singing ‘As we are gathered at the river’. Well on Sunday 16th May we in Kirkgate were gathered, not at the river, but in our sanctuary and halls for the culmination of our Stewardship campaign.

A tremendous amount of preparation went into this event and many gave of their time to make this a success. Many organisations and groups produced colourful, informative displays and we were inundated with old photos, documents and general memorabilia about the various congregations that have become modern Kirkgate. It was both good and fascinating to see, even although some may have felt a little wistful on seeing much younger versions of themselves and others.

A number of short presentations were made in the Church. These involved a quiz about costs in the church, a sketch in which Stuart and Moira displayed their thespian talents, then talks on various issues. Covered were the enormous array of things that our congregation and the Church in general does, how best we can give to help this go forward and what to do about it in a practical way.

The day ended with tea. We had a terrific choice (and quantity) of sandwiches, cakes and goodies all very tempting. Why is it that things that are fattening and bad for you are so appealing and tasty? In most cases it was, as Oscar Wilde said, ‘I can resist anything but temptation’.

As ever, we are grateful to our usual legion of Tea providers, kitchen staff and those waiting on tables, and to all who supported and assisted at the event.

Overall the Gathering went very well and we are now handling the responses. We had a very good response to the invitations that were sent out – 146 people (out of 231 invited) responded. To date, the response to the Information Packs and forms issued at the Gathering has not been so good with only 69 envelopes being returned to date (out of 183 issued).

Thank you to those that have returned their responses, but if you have not responded, there is still time and we encourage you to do so to help support the wide and varied work of the church both locally and nationally. A summary of some of the work is shown opposite.

We have completed 150 years of worship in our building. I read recently that some babies born today may live to 150 years of age! If we want our Church nationally and in our own congregation to carry on for another 150 years we can do it through good stewardship. We have a duty to provide a future of and for faith for that baby that is going to make 150. Andrew BruceStewardship Convenor

Ardrossan and Saltcoats Kirkgate Parish ChurchTotal contribution to Ministries and Mission for 2015:

£56,741

As you can see, the contributions our church makes ensures a very diverse ministry is maintained and that the

Gospel of Jesus Christ is shared in many ways and in many places.

Ministries (85.3%)£48,400 of our total contribution will go towards the costs of providing over 1,000 ministers and other parish workers in communities throughout Scotland and in the Presbytery of England. This contribution also assists with the costs of recruitment and training.

The 2016 cost of a parish minister at the top end of the stipend scale is £41,507 (stipend plus employer's national insurance and pension contributions). As our contribution to Ministries is above this figure, then we are meeting the full cost of our ministry and supporting other congregations. If it was less than £41,507 our congregation would be being supported by other congregations.

Mission (14.7%)£8,341 of our total contribution will be used to support the Church's work in:• Resourcing congregations for

Christian education and outreach• Providing social care services in

Christ's name to further the caring work of the Church to people in need

• Accompanying partners around the world on our shared Christian journey

• Contributing the Church's opinion in public debate and on issues affecting Scotland and the world

• Providing central day-to-day service work in administrative, financial and legal matters

• Planning the General Assembly and ensuring the Moderator represents the Church.

Property Report - Kirk Session, June 2016MANSEThe re-decorating at the Manse is now complete. The annual roof inspection will be arranged during the summer months and arrangements are in place for the servicing of the Manse fire extinguisher.

COTTAGEDelighted to report that the Missives have been concluded and the keys will be handed over to the new owner on the 24th June 2016.

Gates We have now received permission from NAC to erect the gates in the dividing wall between the cottage and the church. Unfortunately, their restrictions /specifications are creating difficulties for the suppliers and a meeting with NAC Planning Department will be required to be arranged to try and resolve the issues.

CHURCHThanks are due to Maureen & Mitchell for taking time to repair the woodwork and painting the windows. Thank also to Alistair and Mitchell for ensuring that our gardens will bloom with colour during the summer months.

Gardening Team To ensure that the gardens are always looking their best it would be good to have a little team who would meet once every 2/3 weeks for one hour to weed and generally tidy the grounds. If you have the time and wish to join this merry bunch please add your name to the list on the hall table.

Steeple Report We have now received a report on the internal condition of the steeple. Two firms visited and their findings and estimates are very similar.

Unfortunately, due to wood rot a lintel will require to be cut out and replaced. In addition, at some point in the past wood worm have been present and although appear to be inactive now the steeple will be sprayed. Over years the stone sheds what is known as spalling and this will require to be removed from the steeple floor before work can commence. The basic costs for this work will be in the region of £2,000 + VAT. This figure does not include costs for a structural engineer, scaffolding and drawings etc.

Heating Survey The church heating advisor paid a visit to Kirkgate to assess the effectiveness of our existing systems.

The advisor’s comments are as follows: The vestry boiler is adequate for the area that it is required to heat. The kitchen boiler is also adequate but the maximum heater output is slightly less than ideal and could be resolved by adding another radiator, if so desired?

The church heating system is 40+ years old and very inefficient compared to modern standards (replacing it would result in a 15 – 20% saving in gas usage). The existing boiler is a very large floor based unit that is difficult for engineers to access and obtaining spare parts is nearly impossible now.

When the boiler is replaced the old heating pipes which run under the pews will be redundant, and we could consider removing these pipes completely, and replacing the current flooring, which is in poor condition in some areas. This work would necessitate our removing the pews downstairs. Once the work is done, we would then have the option of leaving the pews out, or of restoring and replacing some or all of the pews.

Costed plans will be drawn up over the summer period for the work on steeple, windows and sanctuary. Once these are available, discussions will be held with the congregation and any proposed changes to the current layout of the sanctuary will be fully discussed.

CARTA On Wednesday, 8 June we had a visit from two Representatives of CARTA – the Church of Scotland, Church Art & Architectural Committee. The purpose of their visit was to be updated on our proposed ideas, but primarily with regard to the Stained Glass Windows.

PROJECT MANAGERKirkgate has not been blessed with personnel who have experience in the building environment, so we need to obtain the services of a Project Manager for all the proposed renovation work.

The necessary extract minute from the June meeting of the Kirk Session has now been forwarded to Presbytery seeking their approval to engage a Project Manager, and for approval in principle for the renovation work to the steeple/stained glass windows, etc.

Once final plans have been agreed and fully costed, Presbytery and CARTA will again be approached for approval. It may be possible to obtain grants to assist with some of the costs, but most will be met from our reserves which are held in Edinburgh for fabric purposes.
