One of my fundamental ways to relax is to curl up in my favorite recliner with a good book to read The book industry is presenting a truck load of great texts for the holiday season You can find new studies on Pearl Har-bor Franklin Roosevelt Alexander Hamilton as well as works of fiction by

John Grisham Janet Evanovich Nicholas Sparks and JK Rowling The list of new works seems to be endless

I would also recommend you look for new works on an old theme the gift of baby Jesus to a world starving for meaning and purpose Check out works by Lee Strobel David Jeremiah Max Lucado Ann Voskamp Tim Keller NT Wright and Karen Kingsbury to just name a few to light up your knowledge and understanding of the Nativity story

One of our mantras as Reformed Christians is ldquoa mind in service to God is a wonderful thingrdquo As we gear up for our upcoming Advent ndash Christmas season why not pledge to spend some time reading texts which might challenge your understanding of this awesome grace of our Lord Jesus Christ

Outreach

CHRISTMAS IN THE WOODS

Hello KirkWood Outreach would like your help in a Christmas project that reaches out to our communities CHRISTMAS IN THE WOODS We would like to tell the Christmas story around our prayer path What wersquod like to do is have folks posted around each one of the 10 prayer stops that will have a part of the birth of Jesus We would need shepherds village folks to include men women and children wise men Mary and Joseph We would decorate each stop to represent that part of the story Wersquod also like to have a bonfire and serve hot chocolate and apple cider The time frame for this will be Dec 24th (Christmas Eve) 830-1000 between our two services There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex for all of the characters etc Besides the characters we need folks who are willing to man the drink table and folks whorsquoll be fire watchers to keep every-one safe and of course some set-up folks and some clean-up folks For donations wersquore asking for apple cider and Swiss Miss hot chocolate This will be a great way to get the word of Jesusrsquo birth out to our community To volunteer donate or if you have any questions please feel free to email me at fishermd1gmailcom

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT

Dear Family and Friends I am a Life Scout with Troop 54 I am conducting an Eagle Scout Project with my church to make a trailer pad for their mission trailer I am interested in this project because it will help the church by preserving the trailer The trailer is currently parked on the church grounds in grass and dirt The new cement pad will help protect the trailer The money with be used to pay for concrete gravel rebar and concrete mixers This would mean so much to my church if you could support this project At this point I am working on gathering supplies and funding for the project A project date has not been set yet but I hope to choose a date for the project soon and will notify you of the date If you would like to donate supplies I am in need of -Gravel (062 cubic yards)

-Rebar (10 X 20)

-Concrete (112 80-lb bags)

-Tools to compact dirt (3)

-Trowels (2)

-Concrete mixer (2) If you are able to make a financial donation I have set up a site accept donations Site for donations httpswwwgofundmecomJohnEagleProject

KirkWood was asked by the Virginia Foodbank to assist with food distribution at the old Poquoson municipal building at 9 am on December 20th We usually need about eight folks to do the work of filling food bags and helping recipients carry the bags to their vehicles Wersquove already filled our sign-up list Thank you for such a quick response

We now have a history team assembled and hope to com-pose a written history before the end of next year when we celebrate the 30th anniversary of KirkWood Our Trunk or Treat was a huge success this year We had over 500 in attendance The enchanted forest was a great addition I want to thank everyone that helped decorate and helped work the event It could not have happened without you

THE POWER IS IN THE BLOOD Our last Blood Drive of 2016 was held on Thursday No-vember 10th Thank you to all the volunteers and those that came out to donate We collected 36 lifesaving pints What a fantastic Outreach opportunity Connie Barlowrsquos crew fed us Kiwanis BBQ slaw beans chips and yummy homemade desserts And as always the check-in and nursery crews were great Thank you to everyone who supported the American Red Cross this year by donating volunteering and getting the word out around town about this ministry If you have questions or would like to inquire as to how you can help at upcoming drives please contact Cathy Hudgins 757-869-2645 or hudgepudgeaolcom

A Christmas Dessert - KirkWood Silver and friends are invited to a festive Christmas Dessert on Thursday December 15th from 2 pm to 4 pm in the Fellowship Hall Besides scrumptious sweet and non-sweet offerings there will be an inspiring story or two and sharing of favorite Christ-mas traditions Please RSVP in the Narthex beginning November 20th Invite someone new to join the fun and fellowship January Outing - KirkWood Silver will meet at Andrearsquos Italian Restaurant on Highway 17 at 1130 am January 19th for lunch After lunch we will meet at the church for a Birthday celebra-tion for all

PORT Just a reminder that we will be serving at the overnight shelter at Warwick United Methodist Church on Monday December 12th We will be serving ONLY the first shift which includes check-in and the preparation serving and clean-up of dinner The sign up sheet is on the Mission bulletin board Also we have received our first all night at First Baptist Church of Newport News We will be manning the shelter on Tuesday January 3 2017 This will include all three shifts Again it takes about 30 people to man all three shifts The sign up sheet will be posted on the mission bulletin board

KirkWood was asked by the Virginia Foodbank to assist with food distribution at the old Poquoson municipal building at 9 am on December 20th We usually need about eight folks to do the work of filling food bags and helping recipients carry the bags to their vehicles Wersquove already filled our sign-up list Thank you for such a quick response

We now have a history team assembled and hope to com-pose a written history before the end of next year when we celebrate the 30th anniversary of KirkWood Our Trunk or Treat was a huge success this year We had over 500 in attendance The enchanted forest was a great addition I want to thank everyone that helped decorate and helped work the event It could not have happened without you

THE POWER IS IN THE BLOOD Our last Blood Drive of 2016 was held on Thursday No-vember 10th Thank you to all the volunteers and those that came out to donate We collected 36 lifesaving pints What a fantastic Outreach opportunity Connie Barlowrsquos crew fed us Kiwanis BBQ slaw beans chips and yummy homemade desserts And as always the check-in and nursery crews were great Thank you to everyone who supported the American Red Cross this year by donating volunteering and getting the word out around town about this ministry If you have questions or would like to inquire as to how you can help at upcoming drives please contact Cathy Hudgins 757-869-2645 or hudgepudgeaolcom

PORT Just a reminder that we will be serving at the overnight shelter at Warwick United Methodist Church on Monday December 12th We will be serving ONLY the first shift which includes check-in and the preparation serving and clean-up of dinner The sign up sheet is on the Mission bulletin board Also we have received our first all night at First Baptist Church of Newport News We will be manning the shelter on Tuesday January 3 2017 This will include all three shifts Again it takes about 30 people to man all three shifts The sign up sheet will be posted on the mission bulletin board
