Message from Convenor of 1st International Annual Interdisciplinary Conference
Prof. Maurice Nyamanga Amutabi, PhD
Welcome to the KISII UNIVERSITY (KSU)
Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the First Annual
International Interdisciplinary Conference, taking place at the Kisii University (KSU) from July
30 to August 2, 2014, Kisii, Kenya on behalf of the management of this university, led by our
Vice Chancellor John S. Akama. It is a great honour to welcome over 500 of you, to this
important conference. This is a major milestone to our University because this is the highest
number that Kisii University will be hosting for the first time. We need to applaud the University
for this great achievement in th history of this young institution In Things Fall Apart, Chinua
Achebe talks about the lizard that jumped from the high iroko tree and said he would praise
himself if no one else did. I am excited that many of you have decided to attend this highly
acclaimed 1st Annual International Interdisciplinary Conference despite the terror threat in the
country. It gives me great pleasure and honour to welcome you all. We have put all necessary
plans in place to avert any security threat. We know this year’s conference, like Juan Antonio
Samarach often said of the Olympics, “will be the greatest ever!”
The Annual Conference
We intend to make this conference to be an annual event . Some annual conferences die
with the inaugural one. I am excited to be the convenor of this annual conference which I am
glad to see is going to become an annual intellectual activity for many of you from all over the
world. My friend and mentor Prof. Godfrey Muriuki, who is also the Chancellor of Kisii
University, my mentor at the University of Illinois Prof. Paul Tiyambe Zeleza, my friend and
mentor Prof. Toyin Falola of the University of Texas at Austin in the US, and colleagues at Kisii
University will all be very pleased to see the large turnout of this conference and the many
quality publications that will come out from the first conference. Last. I would like to thank the
commitment that KSU attaches to research and publishing through the cooperation that this
conference has received from top management of this University.
Publication of articles in journals and edited volumes
We are committed to publishing all papers presented in our journals and edited volumes. The
hallmark of quality publications relies on peer review feedback and good revision of articles. I
would like to thank in advance participants who will revise their papers and resubmit for
publication in a timely fashion. This will make the publication process easy and much more
enjoyable. Each edited volume will cost you about 3,000/- while the special journal edition will
cost you 1,000/- per copy. We shall limit a maximum of 3 copies per author, and maximum of
3
two copies for none authors. During this year’s conference, we shall ask that those presenting
two papers pay half of registration fee for the additional paper to go towards helping in the
publication process. If you are presenting only one paper, you will not be asked to pay additional
fees for the processing of your peer reviewed article. We ask you to buy copies of your book or
journal issue in order to promote our publishers and printers and to build up next year.
Conference Theme
The conference theme this year is on the “Africa and the new world order” which has attracted a
wide range of abstracts, from education, agriculture, social sciences and humanities and science
and technology. We are delighted by the high number and high quality of abstracts. The high
quality of abstracts is an indication that our request to senior scholars to collaborate with junior
scholars is working. We will still encourage the peer review process that we have used to
improve on the quality of abstracts and paper presentations. We need to think in unique and
creative ways that will make the conference more attractive and useful to scholars from across
the world. We should begin to imagine new possibilities in addressing various development
needs of Africa. I am confident that the conference this year will bring the tradition of deep
engagement and conversation that we will enjoy in the future. I therefore invite you to create a
rigorous and dynamic academic environment for presenters by being active listeners and
providing positive criticism. Give the presenters useful comments that will assist in the revision
and publication of the paper. I wish you good luck in your presentations.
Keynote speakers
This year, we have invited keynote speakers from a wide array of fields. We feel very privileged
and honoured to have such high profile scholars in our midst. Prof. Godfrey Muriuki, Prof.
Collete Suda, Prof. Gilbert Khadiagala, Prof. Shadrack Nasong’o, Prof. Justus Mbae, Prof. Chris
Wanjala and Prof. Eunice Kamaara will all be speaking at this conference. These are reputable
scholars and our mentors and we are delighted to hear from them. Many of the keynote speakers
are famous names whom many of you have had the chance to imitate and emulate, and it is great
that we are sharing this academic platform with them. We are impressed with the great mix of
scholars from a wide range of disciplines, age, race, gender and geographical spread.
Thanking members of Organizing Committee
I would like to applaud the organizing committee, for their commitment in responding to many
e-mails and receiving telephone calls from far and wide, sometimes at odd times and putting up
with all manner of inquiries. I am glad to introduce the 2015 call for papers on “Africa: Looking
East or West” found at the end of the programme. We are expecting abstracts after this year’s
conference.

Call for Papers for Second Annual International Interdisciplinary
Conference, to be held at Kisii University (KSU), Kenya on June 24 to 27,
2015
General conference theme: ““Africa: Looking East or West””
Conference Venue: Kisii University (KSU) Main Campus, Kisii Kenya
Sponsors: Kisii University and Kenya Studies and Scholars Association (KESSA)
The rise of China and India is creating tensions and anxiety in the global arena largely because of
the new financial opportunities for Africa. African countries are said to be looking to the East
with a lot of interest and excitement. Chinese leaders are regarded very highly in Africa, in ways
that Western leaders were regarded few decades ago, because they come with goodies for
African countries. The purpose of this conference on African and its relations with the East and
West is to allow scholars to compare the experiences that the two regions have had in the
development partnerships with Africa. Japan has been an older partner but China and India seem
to have had greater ascendance in the past twenty years in their relations with Africa. Is the
relation between African and Western countries changing due to new friendships with China?
What benefits are African countries getting from their relation with China and India? These are
the type of questions that papers are invited to explore.
Organized and hosted by the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor and other faculties at
Kisii University, this 2nd
Interdisciplinary International Conference will be held between June
24 to 27, 2015 at Kisii University Main Campus, Kisii, Kenya. Submission of abstracts: Send
abstracts of between 250 and 500 words, including full contact details (title, name, address,
email-address, and telephone) as well as institutional affiliation by March 30, 2015 to Prof.
Maurice Amutabi at [email protected] or [email protected]
