Kiwanis Club of Ames, Iowa
Bulletin No. 29 4.12.16
Lauris Olson, Substitute Editor
Program on April 5, 2016. ‘Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance’
Ames has declared April as Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance Month, so it was fitting that the agency’s director, Michael Fritz visited our club. Good Neighbor, as it is usually called, was formed 19 years ago by several Ames faith congregations to coordinate some of the local charity work they had been doing individually. In that time, the agency has been housed in seven locations, with it’s latest home in First Christian Church’s former pastor’s residence at 613 Clark Ave. The agency helps area residents in crisis situations cover utilities, food, rent or transportation costs. But possibly more important and longer lasting, said Fritz, (cont. next page)

(cont. from previous page) are the referrals to other agencies that can help with their other needs like mental health. “We can only help once per year for most of our programs,” said Fritz. “So we really are talking about emergency situations. We know that we are meeting immediate needs, but we also want to make certain that we are meeting their long-‐term needs.” Participation in the Healthy Food Voucher Program is an exception to the once-‐per-‐year rule. Clients can get four or five $5 vouchers for meat, fresh vegetables, eggs and dairy every three months. Last year, Good Neighbor gave away over 4,000 of the $5 vouchers. Many of the vouchers went to the 343 households the agency served in Story County during 2015. Fritz said that the post-‐donation tracking of their clients shows that one-‐time help with a family facing eviction or the water being shut-‐off can be effective. “We are finding that 76 percent of the people we helped with rent payments were still in their homes one year later and that 86 percent of the people who received help with utilities still have an open account or closed their account with no outstanding balance.” Fritz pointed out that even though numbers are used to track programs, the agency is really about making a difference in people’s lives. “We can talk about the numbers and all of the families, but I have the honor of seeing these families,” he said. “There was the woman who needed help after her mother died and she had to use her rent money to go down there to collect her mother’s ashes. There was the elderly woman who fell down and when she was finally able to move about, was so excited to get $20 of food vouchers because she had been living on water and canned soup. She was looking forward to fresh vegetables and milk. “And there was the mother of the 2-‐year-‐old toddler who had broken his leg and was in Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines. She had no money to put gas in her car so she could drive to see her baby.”

The $125 offer Current club president Mike Miller and a former president, Ted MacDonald, are excited about the progress our club has made toward reaching our fundraising goal for the Eliminate Project. The weekly passing of a hat at our meeting since Mike became president has yielded almost enough money to cover the cost of $1,250 for one club Zeller. With two years remaining, we need a bit more than $12,500 – or 10 Zellers –to fulfill our 2010 promise. So Mike and Ted are offering to pay the first $125 of the next four Zeller donations from individual club members. Their offer is good for the next 90 days, so talk to them soon about becoming our clubs’ most recent Zeller-‐level donors.
