St. Isaac's Cathedral was originally the city's main church and the largest cathedral in Russia. It was built between 1818
and 1858, by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand, to be one of the most impressive landmarks of the

Kizhi is a unique historical, cultural and natural complex, representing a cultural heritage of the peoples
of Russia.
The collection of the Open-Air “Kizhi” Museum includes 83 monuments of wooden architecture: old
chapels and houses, windmills and granaries… Most of them have been moved to the island from
various Karelian villages and cover the period from the XIV century up to the present time.
Interesting Facts about Kizhi Island:
➢ Kizhi Island is home to the oldest wooden church in Russia, the Church of the Resurrection of
Lazarus, which was built in the late 14th century.
➢ While many of the buildings on Kizhi Island have stood for centuries, it was not until the mid-20th
century that the Soviets decided to make Kizhi Island into an open-air museum.
➢ No nails were used in the construction of the wooden architecture of Kizhi Island. Instead, pieces of
wood have been notched together to form even the most intricate structures.
➢ Kizhi Island is located in approximately the center of Lake Onega and spans about 6 km long.
A special ruble coin was issued in Russia in 1995 in honor of Kizhi Island.
➢ The first churches on the island did not have onion domes, but pyramid-shaped roofs.

KIVACH WATERFALL
Is the second largest plain waterfall of Europe after Rhine Falls. Water falls down in four steps from the
height of 10.7 m. The waterfall is splendid at any time of the year: waters of the Suna river trapped by
basalt rocks cascade down in a heavy stream making a powerful whirlpool and causing impressive noise.
A homonymous nature reserve surrounds the waterfall, one of the oldest in Russia, established in 1931

SOLOVETSKY MONASTERY
Solovetsky Monastery stands on a small archipelago in the harsh Russian environment of the White
Sea. It grew from a small community of Russian Orthodox monks during medieval times into one of the
largest and most prominent monasteries in Russia. During the 20th century Solovetsky Monastery also
became famous as one of the first Soviet concentration camps in a newly formed USSR. Solovetsky
Monastery spreads across several islands of the Solovetsky archipelago in the White Sea. First human
settlements date back to the 3000 BC. In the first millennium BC Sami tribes erected pagan religious
structures known as "seyda" still visible today. First Slavic fishermen and hunters from the Novgorod
Republic moved to the region in the 12th- 13th century.
