    5 OUT OF 5 STARS

    KATIE BRADFORD

Christmas break, besidesbeing a time to relax andcelebrate with family, is alsothe time for studios to makebig bucks at the box office.A wide array of big budgetblockbusters will be at yourdisposal this season, and youmay be tempted to followthe hype that surrounds filmssuch as National Treasure:Book of Secrets, offeringbig effects and big stars. However, I would urge youto also consider the under-dog; the little movie thatcould that has captured myheart this holiday.

Juno is the quirky com-edy from Canadian direc-tor Jason Reitman about a

16-year-old girls unwantedpregnancy during her junioryear. Her decision to givethe child up for adoption, and the trials and tribula-tions she goes through, arethe center of this delightfulscreenplay by newcomerDiablo Cody. Cody, a former

stripper, author and popularblogger, obviously also hasa knack for screenwriting. Some of the most hilarioussayings that come from her

characters include honest toblog? and fo shizz up thespout. Some find this quick, wacky and sarcastic banterto be unrealistic, but I assureyou, I know people whospeak this way; it is brilliant. In addition to having me institches, there are momentsof heartbreak in this film thatstick with me long after hav-ing left the theatre.

MAD ABOUT ITI am madly in love with

this movie. Firstly, might Icommend the filmmakersfor choosing not only greattalent, but also actors whoactually look high school

aged (the 16 year-olds onGossip Girl look old enoughto run for office).

Ellen Page portraysthe young Juno MacGuff.Sarcastic and quick wit-ted, Page proves herself tobe one of the most irresist-ible young acting talents to

come out of Canada recent-ly. She is coupled with fel-low Canadian Michael Cera, who recently found stardomon televisions Arrested

Development and summerhit Superbad. He is so real-istically awkward as baby-daddy/best friend PaulieBleeker that he actuallycould have been one of myhigh school classmates. Thechemistry between them isalso incredibly authentic andnatural.

The supporting actors arealso magnificent. JenniferGarner is wonderful as thehigh strung adoptive moth-er Vanessa who Juno findsin the want-ads, and JasonBateman is also good as herhusband Mark. Junos step-mother Bren is played hilari-ously by Allison Janney

and her dumbstruck fatheris taken on masterfully byJ.K. Simmons. Her airybest friend Leah is playedquite well by Olivia Thirlby, another character Im con-vinced I went to high schoolwith.

    The characters in the

film are not only funnyand vibrant, but are also allflawed. There is no villain, and while Juno is definitelyrelatable, she isnt a hero

that young women shouldnecessarily aspire to. Herprofound naivety is oftenrevealed when she is placedin situations she admits to befar beyond (her) maturitylevel.

The film is also visuallybeautiful to watch. Creativeand whimsical, there aresequences in which roughpencil animations are fusedwith real-life ones to createa fun effect. This is pairedwith a wonderfully whimsi-cal and surprising soundtrackthat matches the visual andwriting style perfectly.

    Topped off with a refresh-ingly non-Hollywood end-

ing, this is an incredibly sat-isfying film. Add that to thepride I feel as a Canadian, and the jumble of GoldenGlobe nominations I canexcitedly cheer for thismonth, and Im completelyobsessed. Why not join in onthe fun?
