    2.5 OUT OF 5 STARS

    KATIE BRADFORD

It is a given to say thatJack Nicholson and MorganFreeman are two of the bestactors of our age.

Both men have beencaptivating audiences fordecades. Nicholson is stillhot, recently starring in lastyears Academy AwardsBest Picture (The Departed)and continuing to producebox office hits.

Freeman is all over thebig screen as well, starringin four movies this pastyear alone. Believe it or not, however, both stars are get-ting on in years. They areeach 71 years old, and showno signs of stopping.

However, in their lat-est film, it seems theyreattempting to examine theirown mortality and have alittle fun along the way.

The Bucket List followstwo terminally ill men asthey come to terms with

their impending deaths.Edward Cole (Nicholson)is a rich businessman whoowns the private hospitalwhere Carter Chambers(Freeman) is being treat-ed for cancer. When Colehimself falls ill, he finally

is able to empathize withthe troubles of the patientshoused in his overcrowdedcenter.

The two men are forcedto spend all day together, and strike up an inevitablefriendship. When both men

are told they have less thana year to live, they decideto make a bucket list of

things they wish to dobefore they die.Their trips take them

across the world to sky-dive, go on safari, andeven attempt to climb theHimalayas.

The film isnt terrible, butit isnt anything special.

What makes it aboveordinary fluff is the incred-ible talent of Nicholson andFreeman. They arent reallyplaying Cole and Chambers, but rather themselves.

Nicholsons cynical, dirtyold man routine has beenpaying his bills for years, and Freemans calm andwise older gentleman hasdone the same.

It is quite entertaining attimes to watch the two playoff each other. The averagewriting is pushed to the lim-its of its capabilities by the

seasoned actors. Overall, however, the story feels cli-ch and lacking substance.

    There are some good

supporting talents, includ-ing Sean Hayes from Will& Grace starring as Colesassistant, and Beverly Toddas Carters wife, Virginia.

Freemans son, Alfonso, plays his on-screen son aswell.

These actors are verycapable, and have a fewgreat scenes; however theyare largely underutilized. The film in general feels likeit was made merely to allowNicholson and Freeman tohave a blast, to run arounddoing amazing things.

Even the visuals are lessthan impressive.

The fabulous locationsthey visit are rendered onscreen in a way that is remi-niscent of a tourism video. While they are beautiful, theres no oomph, no zing,no she-bang.

Just the camera tell-ing us here is a beautifulsunset, here is a fabulous

cityscape, here is a majes-tic mountain.

While the beauty of theseplaces can speak for them-selves, it felt overly com-

    mercialized and even a littlefake.

The film is directed bythe great Rob Reiner. Farbelow standard, it seems asif he too just wanted to havefun.

For lovers of Freeman,Nicholson and Reiner, feelfree to enjoy this clichd butgenerally entertaining filmabout dying with style.
