    Definitely, Maybe a possibly

    likeable Valentine's film

    KATIE BRADFORD

I dislike Valentine's Day.Though its nice to havepeople tell you they loveyou, binge on chocolate andcry at sad movies, most ofthe time I resent the entirecharade. Its fabricated bycompanies like Hallmark tomake us shell out the bigbucks on useless trinkets, and we do! What use is aten foot red teddy bear that

sings It had to be You?Hollywood cashes in on

this manufactured holiday aswell, releasing sob-fests anddate movies by the bowlful, which meant last week sev-eral films were released on arare Thursday.

Definitely, Maybe wasone of these films thatbanked on couples and thelovelorn to buy into thestory of a father relivingevery great love of his life tohelp his daughter cope withher parents divorce. Writtenand directed by AdamBrooks (Bridget Jones: TheEdge of Reason), it sort of,kind of, maybe delivers.

    The father is William

Hayes (Ryan Reynolds), aformer political consultantwho seems to have a knackfor falling in love and pro-posing, as well as for kissingevery woman who looks hisway. This is how you end upwith the complicated lovetriangle (or is it a square?Parallelogram?) that fuels

    most of the film. Abigail

Breslin plays his daugh-ter Maya who is desperateto know which woman inthe story is her mother (asHayes changes all the namesto throw her off). The pos-sible mommies are: Emily(Elizabeth Banks), Summer(Rachel Weisz), and April(Isla Fisher). Not quite asconfusing as it sounds, butstill a little heavy on themate-swapping for me.

The film moves from agreat, refreshing comingof age story to corny lovestory, to a half heartedfather-daughter buddy com-edy. While a lot of the timethe flashback style works,it is unbalanced. I was leftfeeling fully immersed inHayes romantic history, butlacking in his relationshipwith his daughter. Whileit is obvious they are veryclose and that this little girlchanged the course of hislife, notable aspects are leftout. We never flashback toher birth, and their relation-

ship is often forgotten forhuge spans of time only toresurface randomly, throw-ing off the story rhythm.

Despite this, Breslin andReynolds are quite adorabletogether (which makes thelack of exploration into theircharacters even more dis-appointing), and Reynoldsseems to work as a lead-ing man. While the writingsuffers at times, the endingwas less predictable than Ithought, but not by much.

Some of the charactersfeel unnecessary, underde-

veloped or entirely unlikely, and this is where the moviestumbles. Luckily, it is par-tially saved by the solidacting that is provided, byFisher in particular.

One more detail I feel isoverlooked: history! If weare flashing back to the 90s,everyone should look liketheyre in the 90s. The reli-ance on old news footagefrom election campaigns isthen juxtaposed with thosewatching it, and the fashionsand hairstyles reveal them-selves as completely inac-curate. I watched over 12years pass and everyone inthe film managed to remainin fashions that are popular

today. Obviously an aesthet-ic choice (flannel shirts andshoulder pads are no longerconsidered sexy) but it hurtsthe authenticity of Hayesstory and the charactersthemselves.

The film is imperfect, butin all a rather enjoyable tripthrough memory lane.
