    REEL REVIEWS

Weak, overused plot dooms Doomsday film at box office

    KATIE BRADFORD

The end is nigh. Hmm. . . Ive heard this before. It seems that every threemonths, another horror/thriller/action/sci-fi some-thing-or-other is released towarn us about the vari-ety of different diseases thatwill destroy the world.

Doomsday is yet anotherversion of this popular trendin science-fiction, and it isnot near as impressive as itsbrothers. In fact, it blatant-ly copies aspects of thesepopular films, namely the28 Days/Weeks Later series badly. Even the viruseshave similar names.

In fact, the most irritatingpart is that I expected muchbetter from writer/director

Neil Marshall, who isresponsible for the originaland terrifying (and personalfavourite) The Descent. Imactually finding it difficultto decide where to begin, and wondering if my wordlimit will be sufficient.

Perhaps Ill begin byattempting to explain the

plot; attempting because Ihardly understand it myself.Apparently, a virus brokeout in Great Britain theworst of which in Scotland which causes boils, murder-ous rampages, and throwingup of various liquids. TheUK government sectionedoff Scotland with a verylarge wall a-la Berlin andleft the Scots to be killedoff. They then went on tolive happily in an overpopu-lated, unemployed, povertystricken utopia.

In 2035 the virus breaksout in the safe zone, andthey decide its time to ven-ture back across the wall.

Why? Apparently theybelieve that civilizations onthe other side have a cure.

They send Eden Sinclair(Rhona Mitra, one of the fewredeeming qualities of thefilm) and an elite squadronof special police to retrievethe cure, but are ambushedby a punch of punk rockers. . . or cannibals . . . or punkrock cannibals . . . no oneis really sure what they are,

just that theyre alive, tickedoff, and hungry for humans.

Other civilizations, non-punk rock ones, are found. They live in a castle. Itslike Medieval Times, exceptno free food, funny hats oradmission fee. The castleis explained, but never thefull adoption of a MedievalSociety.

Apparently none of thesedetails are important, simi-lar to any character devel-opment or back-story, orstory at all (save a few shortscenes).

The film tries desperatelyto be original, but only man-ages to be infuriating andeven incomprehensible attimes. I have no clue whythey dress as punk rockers.

Most of the serious actionmade me snicker, as did the

concept that this film is any-thing more than a straight-

to-DVD piece of trash. Skipit, I beg of you.
