PRESIDENT’S LETTER

I would like to welcome Sensei Jonathan Largentas the new Kilohana president, and I wish him many longhours of hard work (I am a realist, folks!), which will keepKilohana fresh, vigorous and innovative. Jonathan has beenactive in Kilohana for many years, and I feel very confidentin his abilities. He will be counting, I’m sure, on people step-ping up to the plate to help him run the organization. If youbelieve in what we do, it is your giri (obligation) to lend ahand. None of the events and functions we put on happen bythemselves – somebody has to roll up their sleeves and dothe work. Make a commitment to yourself and the organiza-tion right now, and let’s make 2010 a wonderful year!

Mahalo to my staff that assisted me during the lasttwo years – Joa Schwinn and Clayton Conrad as vice presi-dents, Helen Sassone as treasurer, Brian Sassone as web-master, Al Bito as registration chairman, and especially BenLujan, who served as secretary and newsletter editor, andworked his Lujan buns off.

We have built something here that needs to last, and it is based on community. We are social animals, andKilohana is our family. We need to remember, too, to sup-port the larger martial artcommunity that Kilohana ispart of. A perfect way thatyou can support the largerDanzan Ryu community, forinstance, is by attending the2010 ‘Ohana in Aneheim, CAon August 20-22. At thisevent, people from all the var-ious Danzan Ryu organiza-tions get together to honorthe memory of ProfessorHenry Okazaki and spend theweekend training. We havechosen this year not to holdour annual Kufferath MastersSeminar, encouraging ourpeople instead to attend‘Ohana.

As we keep our eyeson the horizon, it is important also to remember the peoplewho paved the way for us to be here. For us in Kilohana, thatmeans Professor Sig Kufferath. The year 2011 will be his100th birthday, and his daughter Leslee has plans for a fullweekend of training and celebrating to honor her father. Weare looking at President’s day weekend in February of 2011to hold this event, and I would like to see all of our people atthat seminar, as we pay tribute to the founder of our organ-ization.

I feel a fresh wind blowing, and it feels good to thinkabout the future of our organization. We have made it overmany hurdles, and we have many adventures ahead of us.Let’s get busy and make 2010 our best year yet.See you on the mat!

-Hans Ingebretsen66

Aloha! With the coming of the new year, so begins a new

chapter in Kilohana. I am deeply honored to be the next Kilo-hana president. I was 17 when Kilohana was formed, and ithas been a continuous and influential part of my life. Fromthe first Gasshuku on the banks of the Eel River to the mostrecent Deep Roots Seminar in Campbell, I’ve had the honorand extreme fortune of learning from and training with phe-nomenal martial artists. It is through these interactions thatI have made many friends and established relationships thatpermeate every aspect of my life.

We all owe our sincerest gratitude to Sensei HansIngebretsen for his many years of dedication and service tothe organization. Hans’ generosity, integrity, and enthusi-asm are infectious and have helped to establish a trajectoryfor our organization that is truly astronomical. His selfless

dedication and tireless efforts in promoting Kilohana havecreated opportunities that will contribute to both our indi-vidual and organizational growth for many years to come. Iwill maintain this sense of dedication to and love for the or-ganization that he has imprinted upon me and all of us. Weare all indebted to you Hans. Thank you.

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Hans’administration: Vice Presidents Joa Schwinn and ClaytonConrad, Secretary/Sergeant at Arms Ben Lujan, Member-ship Director Al Bito, Treasurer Helen Sassone, and Web-master/Director of Communications Brian Sassone.Without them, all of the wonderful events over the past twoyears would not have been possible. When you next seethese people, please offer them your thanks.

The future for Kilohana is very bright indeed. In ad-dition to the Kui Lima workouts,

Burning DesireBy Professor James MuroPhotos from the collection of Prof. Muro

In the martial arts, learningis an art in and of itself, in fact, in theart of learning you must “experiencepart of it”. Experience is still one ofthe best teachers you can have. Myteacher once told me “to know isgood but to understand is better”.And understanding comes from ex-perience. This is why school teachers set up learning experi-ences as part of their lesson plans. Learning will take placedespite the ability of the teacher to teach and despite themethods used by the teacher or school. Learning takes placebest where there is a “burning desire” to learn, to experience,to problem solve and strive for perfection to quench thatthirst for the unknown. Multi-faceted learning takes placesimultaneously on the physical level, the mental level andthe spiritual level. And often many moral lessons are learnedalong the way.

A young prospective student once came to learnfrom a well-known martial arts master. The master told thisyoung student to come back in a week’s time if he reallywanted to learn, because he only accepted students whowere serious about their training. The student left and cameback a week later. Again the master told him to leave and re-turn in another week if he really wanted to learn. This wenton for 10 more weeks. Finally the student asked what he

was lacking The master replied “ I am trying to build a burn-ing desire for knowledge in you”. This is necessary in order tolearn what I have to teach you. The student replied” I do notquite understand”. The master said “ follow me if you reallywant to know and understand”.

The young prospect followed the master to the backof his home where there was a small river. The mastergrabbed the young student’s head and shoved it under thewater. He held the student’s head under for a long period. The student struggled but could not free himself. Just whenhe thought he could no longer hold his breath, the old masterbrought him back out of the water. The master asked the stu-dent what he had experienced. The student only knew thatthe master had nearly drowned him and felt that his lungswould nearly burst, he stated “he felt a burning desire tobreathe”.

The old master replied “exactly, you had a burningdesire to breathe”. When your desire to learn and train is asstrong as your desire to breathe, then you will be ready tolearn what I have to teach you.

Of course, this story constitutesan extreme case. However, it does illus-trate an important point. Our level ofawareness and consciousness are height-ened when we are temporarily deprivedof an instructor and his knowledge. Thisexperience helps to increase productivelearning because a better appreciationlevel has been reached. ■77 Professor Muro

The Mega Self Defense Programby Kumu Lua Kate DeMoss, Ph.D.

A unique self defense program entirely de-signed for the visually impaired has emerged fromLondon, England and has already spread to theWest Coast. The two men behind it, SenseiStephen Nicholls and Alan Gutsell, of theBritish Kodenkan Ju Jitsu, have spent threeyears of close cooperation with the visuallyimpaired community to devise the Mega SelfDefense Program (Mega means eye in Japan-ese). It teaches specifically designed self de-fense techniques. Rooted in traditional martial arts, thosetechniques have been adapted to the specific requirementsand abilities of the visually impaired community in order toaddress its specific issues: How does one target one’s at-tacker and defend oneself if one cannot see? What does onedo when one cannot make a quick escape? What are the lawsand regulations that allow one to protect oneself and howdo these differ for the visually impaired?

This program has already met tremendous suc-

cess in Europe. Classes are being taught andenthusiastically embraced on a weekly basis.Requests for the curriculum are now comingin from numerous European countries. Twointerviews of Sensei Nicholls discussing the program havealready been aired by the BBC. And markedly, the Royal Na-tional Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is now promoting anddistributing the program.

In the USA, it was introduced last October withinstructors attending a training certification workshop at theLighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Fran-cisco. The Lighthouse now endorses the program as a per-manent facility with monthly classes being offered initiallyto the 3000 members of their mailing list. The Guide Dogsfor the Blind, in San Rafael, has given recognition to the pro-gram through their 6,000 alumni Newsletter, and contactshave been established with the California Veterans Adminis-tration.

The Mega Program is comprised of a two prongedteaching approach. The first part is a “coach the coaches” cer-tification program, recognized and distributed through Ko-denkan International and Enabling Safety. This involvesteaching tools, sensitivity training, a full understanding ofthe curriculum ranging from theory to hands on techniques, and a comprehensive study of the different causes and typesof visual impairment. The second part of the program is thestudent curriculum. The students need to address the differ-ent causes and motivations for assault, threat recognition, threat response, the legalities of self-defense, the rights toprotect a guide dog under threat, and many other often un-addressed issues. The Mega Program also provides greaterunderstanding of spatial awareness, personal rights, and the physical aspects of self defense.

The course addresses the particular vulnerabilityof the visually impaired community, considered a target byboth criminals and bullies. While teaching over twenty sem-inars to the visually impaired, both Stephen and Alan haveconsistently encountered multiple victims of assault.

An additional unique feature of the Mega Self De-fense Program is the possibility of employment it offers tothose in the visually impaired community. Umit Turkesev, aTurkish National, was tortured into blindness. Three months

after losing his right eye to torture, he lost threeribs, one and a half kidneys, and the use of hisleft eye to cancer. He suffered a terrible lackof self confidence and was afraid to leave hishouse. After a five month internship in theMega Self Defense Program, he has now es-tablished the first self defense school for theblind by the blind in the world.

The program has been developed fordistribution of quality self defense instruction to

the whole visually impaired community of the world. In-structors are currently being certified in England, France,Scotland, Spain, Germany, and the USA. If you are interestedin becoming a certified instructor in the United States, pleasecontact Kate DeMoss at [email protected] . If youwould like more information about the program, the web-site is:

seminars, camps, tournaments, and banquet, we will be es-tablishing a massage board and implementing a massagecertification program under the direction of Professor JamesMuro. These massage classes will be conducted on amonthly basis for 6 months. In 2010, the Kilohana executiveboard has decided to cancel the Master’s Seminar in orderto encourage a strong Kilohana presence at the Ohana inAnaheim, California. Additionally, Kilohana will be assistingto put on the Bob Krull Memorial weekend in April. I hope tosee you all there in order to make these events successful. We continue to work to foster relationships with other or-ganizations in order to open the doors of opportunity for or-ganizational diversification and growth.

As you can see from the calendar of events, there isa lot going on. Participation in these events helps to forge thefamilial bonds that form this organization. Kilohana, likeany group or family, is only as strong as the members thatcomprise it. We all must give to the organization, and it is

through this collective effort thatit evolves, strengthens, and givesback to us. Many people havecome forward to offer their helpto smooth the transition and tokeep Kilohana strong and vi-brant. I am ever-grateful and inawe of this support. As presi-dent, I will do my best to con-tinue the precedent set by thosewho masterfully created and

walked this path before me, while bringing my own uniqueperspective. I would like to thank all of you—past, present, and future— for forming this solid, yet flexible foundationthat is Kilohana. I look forward to training with all of you inthe future…..see you on the mat!

County YMCA Women’s Shelter and to the Royal FamilyKid’s Camp, both of which provide safe harbor and servicesfor abused women and children. The generosity of the teach-ers who shared their time and knowledge at this event is tobe applauded – it was obvious that each of them broughttheir “A” game and each taught from their heart.

A big mahalo is owed to Elisa Semmons, who tookcare of registration, kept the continuity going, and generallywas the glue that kept the event together all weekend. Thanks go out also to Kristina Baker and her son Michael, who ran the Saturday night luau. One word here, folks –“yum!” Yes, the food was outstanding, and it was great to seeeveryone rubbing elbows and relaxing and talking story withthe masters. Big mahalo also to Ron Keaton, who shot thevideo of the event. Ron is the Eveready bunny of videogra-phy, having shot video at Kilohana events for many yearsnow.

Many of the instructors and participants took theopportunity after the event to do some sightseeing. MichaelDeAlba, Bob Austin, Chris Spann, Ron Keaton and I accom-panied Sensei Pedro Porem and his group (who came all theway from Portugal for the event) to San Francisco to see theSamurai exhibit at the Asian Art Musuem and to soak up theatmosphere and great food at Tommy’s Joynt. For me, atleast, it was a perfect end to a fantastic weekend. Plans havebeen made to hold another Kenpo/Kempo ‘Ohana in threeyears – plenty long enough for the bruises to heal, I think.■

Old Oak Ranch, nestled inthe Sierra foothills near Sonora, Cali-fornia was the scenic location for the an-nual Camp Bushido West judo and jujitsu training camp thisyear. This camp, which is sanctioned by the United StatesJudo Association, has been an annual event for over 25years. Starting with check-in Sunday evening, July 19, andcheck-out on Sunday, July 26, it was an intense week oftraining for the 112 students participating. Attendees came

from as far as Alaska toConnecticut.

Judo instructorsincluded Camp DirectorProfessor Charlie Robin-son, Professor Hal Sharpe,Professor Sid Kelly, SenseiHenry Kaku, ProfessorRay Tinaza, Sensei MarkGuerrero, Sensei LisaGuerrero, Professor GaryGoltz, Dr. AnnMaria De-Mars, and 2008 Olympic

Judo Bronze Medalist Ronda Rousey. Between them, all as-pects of judo instruction were taught. This ranged from be-ginning Kelly’s Capers to Kata instruction to conditioningdrills and coaching.

Jujitsu instructors included Sensei HansIngebretsen, Sensei Dale Kahoun, Sensei Jose Ortiz, SenseiChantilly Ortiz, and Professor David Fairfield. Sensei Dalediscussed historic aspects of DanzanRyu Jujitsu in one class, while on otherdays Senseis Jose and Chantilly Ortiztaught interesting contact classes usingfoam rollers as weapons. The rest of theweek was basic grappling, throws, andlocks.

Classes started with SenseiCharlie at 6:30 am followed by break-fast. Junior and Senior judo classes fol-lowed, with jujitsu classes before lunch. In the afternoon there were judoclasses, judo coaching certificationclasses, and kata training and testing.Training for the day ended after dinnerwith randori.

We had one afternoon of su-pervised paint ball and hiking activitiesfor the junior students. Many of the adult students and in-structors took the time to visit the nearby historic Gold Rushtowns of Columbia, Angels Camp, Jamestown and Sonora.Others took advantage of the onsite services of ChantillyOrtiz and Kate DeMoss, who provided deep tissue and sportsmassage for those who needed them.

Of course, a camp of this size and complexity tookmany months of planning and effort to make it run smoothly.

Many thanks to Camp DirectorCharlie Robinson and AssistantCamp Directors Joa Schwinnand Dave Barlow for their manyhours of hard work in makingthis camp happen. We alsowant to acknowledge HollyWest, the camp “mom” and life-guard, for all of her efforts. For-est West deserves notice for anexcellent job of running thesnack bar. ■
