Prerequisites

• Throughout the modules, we will be using the Kinect sensor and Scratch. There are a number of versions of the Kinect. Whilst you can follow the steps in Scratch without having a Kinect, you will eventually need one so you can test the Kinect functionality

Kinect Sensor

• You will need one of the following:–Kinect v1• Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360 with AC Power

Supply• Microsoft Kinect for Windows v1

–Kinect v2• Microsoft Kinect for Xbox One with Kinect Adaptor

for Windows• Microsoft Kinect for Windows v2

PC Capabilities (Kinect v1)

• For Kinect v1 (for Xbox 360 or Kinect for Windows), your computer must have the following minimum capabilities:

• Kinect v1• Windows 7 or Windows 8• 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processors• Dual-core, 2.66-GHz or faster processor• USB 2.0 bus dedicated to the Kinect v1

sensor• 2 GB of RAM• Graphics card that supports DirectX 9.0c

PC Capabilities (Kinect v2)

• For Kinect v2 (for Xbox One or Kinect for Windows), your computer must have the following minimum capabilities:

• Kinect v2• Windows 8 or 8.1, or Windows Embedded 8• 64-bit (x64) processor• Physical dual-core 3.1 GHz (2 logical cores per physical) or

faster processor• USB 3.0 controller dedicated to the Kinect v2 sensor• 4 GB of RAM• Graphics card that supports DirectX 11

Installation

1. Follow the installation instructions for the SDK you chose, check you are using 1.8 for Kinect v1 and 2.0 for Kinect v2

2. Install Scratch 1.43. Follow the Kinect2Scratch installation

instructions4. (Optional) Download the Kinect/Scratch

samples from http://scratch.saorog.com/samples.html

Testing

1. Now run Kinect2Scratcha) Depending on the version of Kinect2Scratch you

are using, you may need to click Launch Kinect and then Connect to Scratch.

2. Position your Kinect so that you can stand in front of it but also can see your screen

3. Stand in front of the Kinect so that it can see as much of you as possible (you may need to reposition the Kinect or gently angle it up or down)

a) If you see a red outline of yourself, it is tracking you

Environmental Considerations

• Kinect can operate under most indoor lighting conditions, including very dark rooms, but it cannot operate in sunlight

• You will need lots of room to freely move about
