Stephen Howell | Academic Engagement Manager
• Prerequisites, hardware & software• Installing and testing your setup• Environments for Kinect usage
Module Overview
Prerequisites
• Throughout the modules, we will be using the Kinect sensor and Scratch. There are a number of versions of the Kinect. Whilst you can follow the steps in Scratch without having a Kinect, you will eventually need one so you can test the Kinect functionality
Kinect Sensor
• You will need one of the following:–Kinect v1• Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360 with AC Power
Supply• Microsoft Kinect for Windows v1
–Kinect v2• Microsoft Kinect for Xbox One with Kinect Adaptor
for Windows• Microsoft Kinect for Windows v2
PC Capabilities (Kinect v1)
• For Kinect v1 (for Xbox 360 or Kinect for Windows), your computer must have the following minimum capabilities:
• Kinect v1• Windows 7 or Windows 8• 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processors• Dual-core, 2.66-GHz or faster processor• USB 2.0 bus dedicated to the Kinect v1
sensor• 2 GB of RAM• Graphics card that supports DirectX 9.0c
PC Capabilities (Kinect v2)
• For Kinect v2 (for Xbox One or Kinect for Windows), your computer must have the following minimum capabilities:
• Kinect v2• Windows 8 or 8.1, or Windows Embedded 8• 64-bit (x64) processor• Physical dual-core 3.1 GHz (2 logical cores per physical) or
faster processor• USB 3.0 controller dedicated to the Kinect v2 sensor• 4 GB of RAM• Graphics card that supports DirectX 11
Software Requirements
• Software Requirements:–For Kinect v1, Kinect SDK 1.8• http://
www.microsoft.com/en-ie/download/details.aspx?id=40278
–For Kinect v2, Kinect SDK 2.0• http://
www.microsoft.com/en-ie/download/details.aspx?id=44561
• Scratch 1.4 – https://scratch.mit.edu/scratch_1.4/
• Kinect2Scratch Middleware – http://scratch.saorog.com
Installation
1. Follow the installation instructions for the SDK you chose, check you are using 1.8 for Kinect v1 and 2.0 for Kinect v2
2. Install Scratch 1.43. Follow the Kinect2Scratch installation
instructions4. (Optional) Download the Kinect/Scratch
samples from http://scratch.saorog.com/samples.html
Testing
1. Now run Kinect2Scratcha) Depending on the version of Kinect2Scratch you
are using, you may need to click Launch Kinect and then Connect to Scratch.
2. Position your Kinect so that you can stand in front of it but also can see your screen
3. Stand in front of the Kinect so that it can see as much of you as possible (you may need to reposition the Kinect or gently angle it up or down)
a) If you see a red outline of yourself, it is tracking you
DEMORunning Kinect2Scratch
Environmental Considerations
• Kinect can operate under most indoor lighting conditions, including very dark rooms, but it cannot operate in sunlight
• You will need lots of room to freely move about
Summary
• We’ve described how to set up your computer for Kinect development with Scratch, including what type of computer you’ll need and installing the SDK
