Knaphill News Summer 2016 3

A warm welcome to our new Brookwood Farm residents. As I am sure you are aware, you reside in Knaphill and receive this quarterly newsletter from the Knaphill Residents Association (KRA). The amenities on Brookwood Farm are coming together nicely with the landscaping, children’s play areas, football pitches and pavilion, not all open yet but I am sure when they do they will be impressive. The new pathway from Brookwood Farm to the canal and on to Brookwood has been open for a few months now and makes a

welcome addition through the open countryside – although the surface l understand leaves somewhat to be desire – feel free to share your opinion with us! The Residents Association is always pleased to hear your views, on this or any other matter. Our web site can be found at knaphill.org

Just a reminder that we are fast approaching the Knaphill Village Show (organised by the KRA) which this year is on Saturday 16th July from 1.00pm to 5.00pm at Mizens Railway, Barrs Lane, Knaphill. This is a great family day out with lots of attractions for young and old. Please turn to page 5 to find out more details.

Very best wishes

Very soon you will be casting your vote in the General Election and receiving knocks on the door from local politicians. On page 5, you will see an excellent contribution from our Planning guru Phil Stubbs, including reference to the 650 new homes recently built or being built in the A322 corridor and the infrastructure that is required to meet the demands of such a large influx of new residents. You may wish to ask the canvassers about the number of local GPs,

NHS dentists and the A322 congestion! Before then, we have our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 22nd April at the Methodist Church, The Broadway, Knaphill, which is open to all. To start the proceedings, at 7.30pm we will have a presentation on the Basingstoke Canal from Robyn Higgs, who will tell us all about the history of the canal and plans looking ahead. After refreshments, the official business of the AGM will start at 8.30pm.The Knaphill Residents Association always welcomes new members onto the Committee, as extra help is always appreciated, no matter how much or how little. Editor’s ReportIt’s that time of year when we all want to be outdoors as much as possible for various leisure and sporting events. In this connection we hope lots of you will come along to Waterers Park and support the new Knaphill Athletic Cricket Club and enjoy the entertainment on offer on and off the pitch. Even better, you might want to get involved as a player! Cricket has a history in Knaphill, so it’s good to revive it, from both a sporting and a community point of view.

We’re also welcoming a new contributor, Roger Westcott, who will be telling us about the ponds in Brookwood Country Park, both from the point of view of his passion, fishing, but also with regard to the wildlife and environmental aspects of the ponds and surrounding land.

And of course as our Chairman mentioned, the Knaphill Village Show is always a brilliant day out, in the lovely rural surroundings of Mizens Farm, and the choice to just chill or be a bit active. Whichever you prefer, here’s wishing us all a good summer!

Kind regards Sue Stocker, Editor

Village Bits & Pieces

4 Knaphill News Spring 2015

Well, I hope you like the lovely sunny cover picture of the Basingstoke Canal, a source of many enjoyable leisure activities and a home to a varied species of wildlife, and it seemed appropriate as this is the subject of the presentation at our forth-coming AGM.It seems that with a bit of luck we’re seeing an end to grey skies and rain, and gardens with soil as sticky as treacle; there are more and more days with a good showing of blue sky and sunshine, spring flowers are starting to bloom and there’s more birdsong to be heard again.Hopefully you’ll enjoy this spring edition of the magazine; there’s a lot going on as always, some positive, some more challenging. The KRA is doing its best on an on-going basis to maximise the former and resolve the latter. Have a read of the article on page 8 “The KRA, what’s it all about then?”, and let us know what you’d like to see added to this list; a few readers’ letters are long overdue! Best wishes,

Sue Stocker, [email protected]

Christmas lightsThe Christmas tree initiative launched a couple of years ago was still going strong in 2014, and we’ve heard that the additional red ribbons were appreciated. This year we will endeavour to ensure that all the lights are working, and we’ll also hopefully have more participants, as additional interest was expressed belatedly. In addition, we are looking at the possibility of planting a tree which could be illuminated on the green opposite the Garibaldi pub.

PCC Meeting 7th AprilThe next PCC meeting will be held on Tuesday 7th April starting at 7.30 pm at Stef’s Café. Come along and air any concerns with your neighbours, councillors and our local police officers. In this connection, Sgt Chris Lee who was the neighbourhood sergeant for Knaphill & Brookwood has taken up a new position within Surrey Police, and our thanks and best wishes go with him. We await news of his replacement.

Hanging basketsAt the request of the Residents Association, Cllr Saj Hussein is actively organising hanging baskets for Knaphill. These will be mounted on lampposts along the High Street and Anchor Hill, and will certainly help brighten our street scene as they do in other neighbourhoods of Woking.

Village sign refurbishmentAs you may have seen in the local press recently, Giles and his team at Tesco Knaphill responded magnificently to our request for help in financing this work, raising a terrific £600. The repainting of the sign is currently underway, and we look forward to it being reinstated shortly in its fresh new colours.

The Chillis Indian Restaurant See our Business Focus article on page 10 for more information – and look out for the tempting special deals!

Spring litter pickThis is being organised for a Saturday morning on 16th May. Keep an eye on the website and notices around the village for confirmation of the date. We had a very good turnout last November, let’s see if we can do even better this time!

New business Kärcher

Kärcher Industrial Compressors, specialist suppliers of equipment for steam cleaning without chemicals, cleaners and sweepers for home and garden for both professional and personal use, moved into the

old Coral premises at 29a High Street in the first half of February. A new business is always welcome in Knaphill, so more power to your elbow, Kärcher!

With a jingle jingle jingle and a tap tap tap

Yes, that’s right, the Morris Men cometh!! On St George’s day, 23rd April to be precise, at 8pm at the Garibaldi Pub, Chobham Road. The Guildford Pilgrims Morris will be putting their best feet forward to entertain us with this unique example of Olde English folklore. So come along and encourage them to jingle louder and tap harder!

Knaphill firm helping the hearing-impaired

A specialised Knaphill company providing products to assist people with hearing impairments has been granted a £125,000 Enterprise M3 expansion loan which it hopes will help increase its product range.Conversor, located in Lower Guildford Road, designs and manufactures assistive listening devices (ALDS), which work by using a microphone that can be directed towards or placed near the desired sound source. This is then transmitted to a receiver worn by the user, thereby amplifying the sound and reducing background noise and improving the hearing experience for the hearing-aid wearer.

Knaphill News Summer 20164

St George’s day fairSt George smiled down on us and kept the rain away from the High Street and Anchor Crescent on 23rd April to support the St George’s Day charity fair organised by Jim Ahmed of the PO shop in aid of Shooting Star CHASE, the children’s hospice. There were plenty of attractions and entertainment for youngsters, and a variety of stalls and food and drink on offer for the adults, but the highlight of the day was the sponsored leg-wax endured by Jim, Sam, Martyn and Mick, all of which combined to raise the fantastic amount of £3,400.

Floral decorationsGood news, the planters have arrived on the mini-roundabout at the bottom of Anchor Hill. As we go to print, we’re still waiting for the posts to be installed for the hanging baskets but are assured by our Councillors this is imminent, as are the boxes for the railings outside the Co-op.

Litter pickThe litter pick on 7th May was well attended, with several new faces and hands, so we were able to spread further up the High Street and down Anchor Hill than in the past. Large items of litter such as drinks cans and fast-food packaging were not as abundant as in the past, but there seemed to be a greater quantity of cigarette butts outside restaurants and take-aways. We shall be contacting these businesses to ask them to try to resolve this unsightly issue.

HustingsThe hustings organised by the KRA on 28th April at St Hugh of Lincoln church was very well attended by residents, although sadly only fielding representatives of three parties. Father Alexander was a very able adjudicator, and there were several lively question and answer sessions on a variety of issues. Our thanks to Father Alexander for his assistance.

AGMThe Knaphill Residents’ Association held its Annual General Meeting on May 17th at the Baptist Church, High Street, Knaphill. In line with previous years we invited a guest speaker to kick off the evening. This year Kim Lowe from Brookwood Cemetery Society gave an interesting and at times amusing presentation on the history of the cemetery and the work the society is doing to restore some of the gravestones and mausoleums. Following a short break, the business of the AGM was carried out and John Butler was re-elected chairman and Linda Parsons secretary. In the Q&A session, residents asked for an update on the old library site, and Cllr Hussain responded to this question. Other members raised issues on planning and parking in and around the village.

Shop closuresAs most residents will by now be aware, we are unfortunately losing 3 long-standing shops from Knaphill village, the florists Autumn Leaves, Switchback Cycles and the Knaphill Pet Store. This is very disappointing news, having just had a period with no empty premises in the village which had led us to hope that things were looking up. The Anchor Pub will also be closing in the not-too-distant future, and we await details of the promised public information/consultation meeting regarding its future. It is still to be decided if the building will be demolished and a new building put up in its place, or if it will be retained and remodeled as flats and retail units.

Vyne BollardsYes, they remain out of use, and more and more motorists are breaking the law by using this junction to drive between The Broadway and Redding Way. It is now two years since the bollards were broken, and although Surrey County Councillors have made promises there has been very little action.

Knaphill Athletic Cricket Club’s unlucky start to seasonKnaphill Athletic CC’s inaugural match on Sunday 15th May sadly had to be postponed due to the unplayable nature of the pitch subsequent to an invasion by travellers, followed by heavy rain. The match has been rescheduled for 31st July. For more information on Knaphill Athletic CC, see our Sports Section.

Beat the Draughts...

Last year, Surrey County Council undertook a review of requests for new, or amendments to existing, parking restrictions. Recommendations for new restrictions and changes to existing arrangements were presented to the joint Woking Committee on 22 October 2014. The joint Woking Committee approved all of the recommendations and these are now being formally advertised for public comment. They can be seen at www.surreycc.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/parking/parking-news-and-updates/parking-news-and-updates-in-wokingFor Goldsworth Park, there are three recommendations for double yellow lines at junctions to prevent vehicles parking dangerously and obstructing sight lines. The junctions are:• Tresillian Way junction with Sythwood• Willowmead Close junction with Sythwood• Marston Road junction with Hallington CloseObjections, comments and letters of support must be submitted by 23rd January 2015 either on the web page using the feedback form, or by posting a letter to:Woking 2014 Parking Review, Parking Team, Rowan House, Guildford, Surrey, GU4 7BQ.Note: the GPCA is supporting these very sensible, small-scale parking restrictions in the interests of road safety.

An exciting year ahead for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices by Lorraine Weedon, Marketing & Communications Manager

It’s the January issue and of course that means a new year is upon us, and what an exciting year it will be. The conversion of Goldsworth House to a new state-of-the-art Hospice will start in February, and everyone at Woking & Sam Beare Hospices is looking forward to providing the best possible environment for our patients and their families. They remain at the heart of everything we do and everything we seek to achieve. Our talented and dedicated staff, along with over 800 volunteers will ensure a smooth transition.Volunteers are vital to the provision of Hospice care and as we begin 2015, I would like to say a huge thank you to people who volunteer for the Hospices. I am very proud to say we have the support of over 800 part-time volunteers, each of whom give their time when they can. Put simply, we would not be able to provide the services we do without them. Our Volunteers bring with them a huge range of skills and experience which we use across the organisation, in everything from our retail outlets and fundraising initiatives through to driving, cake and tea-making for patients, flower arranging, reception and administrative support. We have an exciting new chapter in the history of the hospices approaching, which we know will be embraced by our existing volunteers and will inspire others to get involved. Could this be you? Find out more on the Hospice website (www.wsbhospices.co.uk) or call Volunteer Services on 01483 881750. We’d love you to join our team. Happy New Year from all at Woking & Sam Beare Hospices.

Brookwood FarmThe building of the new houses on Brookwood Farm is now well past the halfway point and many new families are establishing themselves in Knaphill. The Residents’ Association is monitoring the development of this site to make sure that the conditions included in the planning agreement are complied with. One issue that has been brought to the Association’s attention is the state of the new footpath which goes from Brookwood Farm Drive across the country park to the canal towpath in Brookwood. The main issue is the stones used to surface the footpath, which residents find very rough on their shoes and difficult if pushing a buggy or accompanied by children on cycles.

Old Library Site, High StreetNew Vision Homes have finally got round to surrounding the site with hoardings. The KRA has been informed that New Vision Homes has acquired land at the rear of the old library building, and we are to expect a new planning application from New Vision Homes. The original agreed plans were for a three-storey building of contemporary design containing 9 apartments. We have now been given to understand that the redesigned building will contain 18 apartments and the entrance will be off Englefield Road.

A322 (Bagshot Road) CongestionWoking Borough Council is expected to publish their plans for easing the congestion on the Bagshot Road by the end of June. The KRA will publish the plans on their website when they become available.

Knaphill Village Show ProgrammeWell, just in case you’d not yet seen or heard…! Yes, of course you have, but a little extra reminder won’t do any harm: Saturday 16th July at Mizens Farm, Barrs Lane is the place to be between 1pm and 5pm for the main local event of the summer. We’ll have all the usual favourites: various musical groups, singers, Bisley Almac Brass Band, Morris dancers, children’s funfair, bouncy castles, Punch and Judy, face-painting, dog show, beat-the-goalie.Also, a tempting selection of foods and drinks, BBQ, stalls selling a variety of useful, fun and decorative items, raffles and tombolas, and of course the non-stop fun for young and old of the Mizens steam and diesel loco-pulled rides all afternoon. Our thanks as always to Mizens without whose generosity in terms of venue and help this event could not happen, and also to all the Knaphill retailers and businesses who are so generous in their donations.

Knaphill News Summer 20166

New Vicar for Holy Trinity with St Saviour’s Parish ChurchSince our previous vicar, the very highly-regarded Rev Nick Grew, was called to a new Parish in Luton last November, Holy Trinity with St Saviour’s Church has been without a vicar.

It is therefore with great pleasure that we can announce that a new appointment has been made. Knaphill Junior School commended for its inspirational leadershipFollowing its recent inspection, Knaphill Junior School has been rated as “Good” by Ofsted, with “Outstanding” areas. This is fantastic news following its previous inspection in 2014 where the rating it was given was “Requires Improvement”. This report comes at an exciting time for the Federation of Knaphill Schools alongside the newly appointed Federation Headteacher, Sarah Mackintosh.

The lead Ofsted inspector praised the leadership at Knaphill Junior School, calling it inspirational and stating that, since 2014, the leadership team has transformed the culture of the school and fosters the highest expectations in all areas, specifically stating: “The drive to make sure that all pupils achieve well, no matter what barriers to learning they may have, is uncompromising.”

They also recognised how the teaching has improved rapidly since the previous inspection as a result of strong leadership and is now good and continues to improve. Knaphill Junior School was praised by the inspectors

who said its “work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding” and that “pupils are looked after extremely well.”

Head of School, Michelle Austen, said: “The Inspection was a really positive experience and my first one as Head of School. The report reflects the strength of the school and the incredible journey it has been on over the last two years. Everyone is over the moon and we are so proud to be part of Knaphill Junior School with such committed children, parents and staff”.

Chair of Governors, Caroline Wright, commented: “I am delighted that Ofsted have recognised the hard work of the staff at Knaphill Junior School, have graded us as “Good” and have acknowledged the “Outstanding Leadership and Management” of the school. This is a result of hard work over the last two years with a clear focus on improving outcomes for our pupils, led by Michelle Austen and Lauren Daly with support from Ani Magill.” The School continues to aim for an Outstanding rating in all categories.

Incredible Edible KnaphillDo you:

– love fresh veg, but don’t have enough time to look after a garden by yourself (remember the taste of peas straight from the pod!)?

– enjoy gardening, but lack the space, knowledge or physical strength to do it on your own?

– have gardening knowledge, tools or equipment that you’d be happy to share or donate?

Then why not get involved in our Incredible Edible group this Summer! We‘re a group of Knaphill residents who are setting up a Community project in Knaphill for communal veg growing and food appreciation.

The “Incredible Edible” initiative that has sprung up in over 50 communities all over the UK has inspired us to try something similar here, which is basically to grow veg on communal spaces in the village, bringing together people of all ages and from all walks of life.

The 1st Knaphill Scouts are kindly allowing us to use land around their Hall, and we’ve made a start with planting some runner beans along the high fence. You can find us at https://www.facebook.com/Incredible-Edible-Knaphill-1015706398522110/ or get in touch via [email protected].

Hall in this issue. In December, we had been told that the main work would be complete by 23rd and we planned to take the Hall over on 5th January after commissioning but there have been major problems with the electricity and gas supplies, much to the frustration of both the GPCA and Woking Borough Council. Everyone seems to stop work for two weeks over Christmas so it is likely to be the end of January before we can move back in. At the AGM, Ray Morgan (Chief Executive of Woking Borough Council) said we would be celebrating by Easter. At the time, I thought he was being pessimistic but now I think he was just being realistic! On a brighter note, what you will see when the Hall is open again is a bright clean space with a lovely wood-look floor throughout, a new kitchen with beech cupboards and stainless steel appliances, bright new toilets, improved and more versatile lighting, a much needed ventilation system and free wi-fi.

Annual General MeetingWe had a very good turnout at the AGM – it is good to see so many residents taking an interest in the GPCA. The report from the AGM is on the website – ourgoldsworthpark.org.

uk – so if you were unable to attend you can read about it there (click “About” then “Meeting minutes”).Ray Morgan, Chief Executive of Woking Borough Council, attended to talk about the problems that had caused the delays to the building. He answered questions about all sorts of issues including the public toilets, lighting round the lake and recreation ground, and the installation of CCTV cameras. Please read the report on the website for his answers.

ProjectsThe Community Hall is not the only topic of interest to the GPCA. You should be able to see the fruits of some of our other labours soon with the installation of new street maps of the area. We are also involved in campaigns for an improved crossing by the Fox and Flowerpot and an increase in the number of parking spaces for disabled people in the shopping centre car park. There is the ongoing discussion about the overhanging trees on the footpath to Langman’s Bridge and issues over the responsibility for parcels of seemingly common land.If you have any issues of general concern or would like to help with any of these projects, contact me through this magazine or on [email protected] that’s left for me to do is to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year and to say I hope to see you all at the opening of the Community Hall in the near future.

Established on 1st April 2015, the Goldsworth Park Angling Club works in partnership with Woking Borough Council, site owners Thames Water and the Environment Agency, to oversee and manage the sport of Angling at Goldsworth Park Lake and Brookwood Ponds 2 and 4.

As a non-profit making organization, the key objectives of the club are to:

1/ manage and promote angling in a controlled and positive manner;

2/ offer new-comers to the sport tuition and support from fully qualified coaching teams;

3/ actively help care for the environment and wildlife, working in partnership with WBC, the Angling Trust, Surrey Choices and

Surrey Wildlife Trust, and most importantly yourselves, the local community.

To date, we have been very busy at Goldsworth Lake involving ourselves with many improvements off the back of the Goldsworth Park Restoration project that I created back in 2007, including planting reed beds, building fishing/viewing platforms, wildlife areas including a Kingfisher bank, an eco island, and it this positive approach that we wish to bring to Brookwood Country Park.

To set the ball rolling, from 1st April 2016 the club introduced a small charge for fishing on Brookwood Ponds, payable on the bank to one of our registered Bailiffs (always ask to see their ID cards please!), who will issue either a day or an annual permit. Prices are indicated on the notice board in the car park. Please note that juniors 12 years or under may fish free of charge, but MUST be accompanied by an adult. Our Bailiffs are make regular daily visits and part of their duties is to help and advise as best they can, whether fishing-related or not. In fact, Les Norton our Head Bailiff for Brookwood, is a hive of information on wildlife, and particularly when it comes to bird life, so if you spot him and you have a question, do stop and have a chat, he will be more than happy to help.

As a non-profit making organisation, all monies generated will go back into the upkeep of the ponds and the sport, and you will start to see examples of this in the near future such as reed management and bank improvements. This August 2016, we will be holding some angling teaching days specially designed for beginners of all ages over 7; these events will be FREE of charge but you will need to book a place, so if you’d like to try your hand at angling or would like to know more about the club and its activities, please do give me a call on 07779 896393 or e-mail me at [email protected].

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices are proud to announce that Sky News Presenter Isabel Webster is to take the role of New Build Appeal Patron. Best known for co-hosting Sunrise on Sky News, Isabel has a personal connection with Woking Hospice as her mother was the original architect for the current building in Hill View Road.

Isabel recently visited the hospice to announce her official support of the New Build Appeal, and said “I remember walking around the building with enormous pride as a school girl. Having witnessed its creation, I am now thrilled to be looking to the future and lending my voice to the new hospice.” She then visited the new hospice build site in Denton Way, Goldsworth Park where she took a tour of key areas under construction such as the Wellbeing Centre, the Café area and Therapy rooms. She continued, “It’s fantastic to see for

myself the progress being made on site; it’s coming along brilliantly and feels like an enormous building. It’s crucial that funds keep coming in to enable the new Woking & Sam Beare Hospices to continue their brilliant work.”

The Hospice launched a £3.4 million New Build Appeal in February 2016, of which so far nearly £1 million has been pledged and fundraising activities are continuing. For ways to get involved and to donate visit: www.wsbhospices.co.uk/NewBuild.

Basingstoke Canal anniversariesThis year’s Woking Canal Festival on 6th and 7th August will celebrate no less than three anniversaries. Firstly, it’s 25 years since the reopening of the Canal to navigation, secondly it’s the 50th anniversary of the Surrey & Hampshire Canal Society who lobbied the two Councils and undertook so much restoration work to enable this reopening, and last but not least it’s also the 50th anniversary of the Narrow Boat Owners Club, one of the oldest inland waterway boat clubs. As well as vintage canalboats, there will also be approximately 40 70ft narrow boats attending the festival, so the atmosphere and spectacle promises to be colourful to say the least. For landlubbers, there will also be stands and entertainment around Chertsey Road Bridge.

Surrey Libraries are offering children aged 4 to 11 years an exciting Summer Reading Challenge celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl. A Great Season for The Knappers In one little corner of Knaphill, a big story is emerging. The story of Knaphill Football Club!

The team from Redding Way has just enjoyed a record breaking season finishing fifth in only their second campaign in the Premier Division of the Combined Counties

League, reaching the fourth round of the FA Vase only to succumb to a narrow 2-3 defeat at Kidlington in January, and also reaching the Quarter Final of the Surrey Senior Cup before bowing out to a solitary goal at Sutton United who play their football in the Vanarama National League in February.

Many games during the season have provided entertaining, skillful and attacking football which a seasoned spectator would only expect to see in the higher echelons of the English football pyramid. All this is a credit to First Team Manager Keith Hills who has assembled a superb squad of local players, who have bonded together well as team mates, play for the badge and always give 100% commitment. Keith’s biggest task during the close-season is surely to try and keep his excellent squad intact.

The Reserve team under Simon Martin won the Suburban League and were presented with the championship trophy in May.

Behind the scenes a strong boardroom headed by Chairman Dave Freeman has ensured that all has been ‘Hunky Dory’ even though they’ve had issues with postponements due to poor pitch drainage to contend with and other distractions.

A number of local businesses have begun to sponsor the club as it becomes more successful and evidence of this can be seen through kit sponsorship, pitch-side advertising and adverts in the club’s excellent match day programme.

The 2015/16 season also saw the emergence of Knaphill’s ‘Two Man Army’ who have already gained notoriety throughout non-league circles for the unique way in which they support the club. That in itself is entertaining and definitely worth seeing!

In conclusion, Knaphill Football Club provides the community with a fantastic amenity which should not be overlooked. They work hard all year round to achieve excellence and everyone connected with the club should be congratulated. Yes, it’s time now for all of us to support our real local football team! Knaphill Athletic Cricket ClubThis is the first time Knaphill has had a cricket club since

back in 1991 when the old club was in a local league. We have recently found out that there was actually also a Knaphill Ladies CC which played in Waterers Park until the end of the 1930s. The present club is fortunate to

be associated with Knaphill Athletic FC who have been very supportive. The club’s home games will again be played in Waterers Park. We have a limited number of games in this our first season, and you’ll have heard that unfortunately our first game against Byfleet CC on 15th May had to be postponed and is rescheduled for Sunday 31st July.

By the time you read this, we will have had our game on 12th June against the WBC XI, with a Picnic in the Park for the Royal Anniversary. The two remaining games of the season (over and above 31st July) will be on Sunday 17th July versus Brookwood CC, our local rivals, and Sunday 21st August vs Woking & Horsell CC Sunday 2nd XI, which will be our Charity Match benefitting Woking & Sam Beare Hospices to support their new-build fundraising effort. Over and above the cricket, we will have a BBQ/hog roast, beer tent, a range of activities including face-painting, raffle, Welly Wanging, and a tug of war between The Royal Oak and The Garibaldi pubs.Depending on the success of this season, we would like to be able to look at setting up a junior and ladies team.We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our games, and you will be sure of a warm welcome, be it as a spectator, player, umpire or on the organizing committee! Please check out our Facebook page, like and share this. The more support we get, the better, and also check out our Twitter feed @cricketknaphill. Tel: 07568 552 201, email: [email protected]

Knaphill Bowling ClubWe were pleased to welcome nearly 40 people to our Open Days last month, and delighted that 25 of them (so far) have decided to join us. Most of them have never played before, but they are now enjoying coaching and playing sessions. We hope that these sessions will help them to improve their game and encourage them to play in our teams. Knaphill News, along with other local publications, played its part in getting our message out to the local community.Regular readers will know that that the Club, although hidden from most people’s view, is situated close to the centre of the village. We have a busy schedule during the playing season with lots of matches, competitions and social bowling. We recently had a fun bowls evening which proved very popular, especially with many of our new members, and we plan to hold more of these evenings over the rest of the Summer. If you are interested in sampling bowls with us, please contact our Secretary, Alan Bennet on 01483 480262.By Alan Bennet
