Knaresborough - A Great Location

St Robert was a hermit who lived by the River Nidd in Knaresborough in the 13th Century and is considered one of the significant saints of this period.

A number of stories exist about him, including one legendary tale that Sir William de Stuteville, the local landowner in Knaresborough, complained to Robert that the King’s deer were eating his crops.

So legend has it, Robert managed to herd all the Kings deer into his barn as if they were a tame flock of sheep and then harnessed them to his plough and set them to work!

Before his death in 1218, St Robert established an order of Trinitarian Friars at Knaresborough whose Friary was near Abbey Road in Knaresborough. St Robert’s cave and the remains of his chapel

still exist here today.
