6.0 TECHNIQUE
6.1 Applications
Visual examination is generally used to determine such things as the surface condition of the
part, alignment of mating surfaces, shape, or evidence of leaking. In addition, visual
examination is used to determine a composite material's (translucent laminate) subsurface
conditions.
6.2 Direct Visual Examination
Direct visual examination may usually be made when access is sufficient to place the eye
within 600 of the surface to be examined and at an angle not less than 30°. to the㎜
surface to be examined. Mirrors may be used to improve the angle of vision, and aids
such as a magnifying lens may be used to assist examinations. Illumination (natural or
supplemental white light) for The specific part, component, vessel, or section thereof,
being examined is required. The minimum light intensity at the examination surface / site
shall be 1000Lux. The light source, technique used, and light level verification is required to
be demonstrated one time, document and maintained on file.
6.2.1 Visual examination personnel shall have an annual visual examination to assure natural or
corrected near distance acuity such that they are capable of reading standard J-1 letters
on standard Jaeger test type charts for near vision or equivalent methods.
6.3 Remote Visual Examination
In some cases, remote visual examination may have to be substituted for direct
examination. Remote visual examination may use mirrors such systems shall have a
resolution capability at least equivalent to that obtainable by direct visual observation.
6.4 Sequence of Visual examination
1) Identify the configuration drawing of part to be examined.
2) Establish the plan for the visual examination using checklist.
3) Determine the examination technique.
4) Prepare the necessary equipments, visual aids and measuring aids.
5) Preparation of surface.
6) Check the light intensity by using light meter with valid certificate on surface to
examined.
7) Perform visual examination.
8) Evaluation.
9) Mark out the visual examination report.
10) Verify the visual examination result using checklist.

7.0 EVALUATION
7.1 Symbols
The following symbols are used in Table 1.
a nominal throat thickness of the fillet weld (see also ISO 2553)
b width of weld reinforcement
d diameter of pore
h height or width of imperfection
I length of imperfection in longitudinal direction of the weld
Ip length of projected or cross-section area
s nominal butt weld thickness (see also ISO 2553)
t wall or plate thickness (nominal size)
wp width of the weld or width or height in case of fracture area
z leg length of a fillet weld (see also ISO 2553)
β angle of weld toe
fJ angle of angular misalignment
7.2 Assessment imperfection
Limits for Imperfections are given in Table 1. These limits apply to the finished weld and may
also be applied 10 an intermediate stage of fabrication.
If, for the detection of imperfections, a method other than macro examination is used, only
those imperfections shall be considered which can be detected using a magnification equal to
or less than tenfold.
7.2.1 Excluded here from are cold laps (see Table 1, 1.5) and micro cracks (see Table 1, 2.2).
Systematic imperfections are only permitted in quality level D, provided other requirements
of Table 1 are fulfilled. A welded joint shall normally be assessed separately for each
individual type of imperfection. Different types of imperfection. occurring at any
cross-section of the joint, which weaken the cross section may need special consideration
(see multiple imperfections), The limits for multiple imperfections (see Table 1) are only
applicable for cases where the requirements for a single imperfection are not exceeded.
7.2.2 Any two adjacent imperfections separated by a distance smaller than the major dimension of
the smaller imperfection shall be considered as a single imperfection.
8.0 ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS
8.1 Limits for imperfections (Refer to Table 1)
