KNIGHT OF THE MONTH
This month, our Knight ofthe Month is Tom Maguire.
For those of you who made the Annual Meeting of the
Columbus Club of Arlington on January 4th, you know
what a great job Tom is doing as Columbus Club
Treasurer. He’s kept the budget tight, and is always
ready to explain the year-to-year changes in the many
line items. Tom’s volunteer services to the Club should
be appreciated by all – but not just for his responsibilities
as Club Treasurer. If you enjoy our monthly Family
Breakfasts, Tom also coordinates the volunteer staff that
makes those such great occasions for our families. Many
thanks, Brother Tom.
FAMILY OF THE MONTH
If you don’t know Bob
and Amy Dannemiller, you
don’t know EDW! They do
so many things above and
beyond the call, and
frequently behind the
scenes, that if you’re not
behind the scenes too, you
don’t see it. Ifyou worked at
the Thanksgiving feed, or
the Family Breakfasts you
saw them. They’re a part of
almost everything we do
around here, so when they
were conspicuously absent
from the EDW Christmas
Party - we were short door
prizes in a big way! I
especially missed my annual chance to win one of their
Cap’s or Wizard’s tickets. Having just seen Bob at the
November Columbus Club Board meeting, and the
December Family Breakfast, I knew he was feeling more
than a little under the weather. What could keep the
Dannemillers from a great party? How about getting a
stent put in! Bob spent the evening of the party in a
hospital bed with a little unscheduled surgery - but true
to form, they made it to the New Year’s Eve Gala!

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE OurNew Year’s Eve Gala revelers enjoyed bringing in
the New Year at EDW. SK Bob Muschamp provides a
great summary of the event in this month’s Knight Life.
Even as we’ve just turned over a new year, we have a
fast-approaching Lenten Season that begins on
Valentine’s Day since Ash Wednesday falls on February
14th this year. But not to worry! EDW has a red meat-
free (that means seafood for us!) Valentine’s Day
Supper Club on the first Friday in Lent (Feb. 16th), with
our usual Family Breakfast on Sunday the 18th.
Thank you to all who contributed to our
“Christians at Risk” end-of-year push to raise $2K to enable a displaced Christian
family to move back into a home in Karamles, Iraq. We blew past our goal by
about 50%, and will continue to raise funds for our brothers and sisters in the
Middle East in the coming months.
We held our Annual Columbus Club Meeting & Elections following the
EDW meeting on January 4th. There was some significant discussion about a
proposed expansion of the pool deck. Please take note of the meeting summary
in this Knight Life. We also held an Open House/Social on January 18th, and
enjoyed talking about our organization and council to prospective Knights.
Thanks to all who helped get the word out at our parishes for this event. Thank
you to all who participated in March for Life 2018 on Jan 19th. It’s truly an
inspirational event, and this year the weather was even pleasant for a change! I
would also like to reiterate my thanks to PGK John White for his efforts on
providing warm coats, scarves, knit caps and waterproof boots for local children
as part of the KofC “Coats for Kids” Campaign. John is also participating in the
upcoming “Polar Plunge” event to raise money for the Special Olympics of
Virginia. His daughter Allison is also plunging in Virginia Beach on February
3rd, and is really the one bringing in the donations. She’s near the top of the
leader board, and has already surpassed $5K.
EDW is supporting four seminarians this year. Please keep these men in your
prayers: John Paul Heisler (St. Charles Borromeo Seminary), John O’Farrell &
Charles Pavlick (Mount St. Mary’s Seminary), and Rev. Mr. Nicholas Schierer
(The Pontifical North American College, Rome, Italy).
This month we highlight the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord, and the
Purification of the Blessed Mother, on February 2nd. May we give ourselves, our
work, and our sacrifices to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and present ourselves
before the most precious body, blood, soul and divinity of Our Lord who dwells
in our tabernacles – even as our Blessed Mother presented her infant Savior to
the Most High in the Temple in Jerusalem.
Vivat Jesus!

THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD “(On this day), the feast of Candlemas, we recall the presentation of
Jesus in the temple. Forty days after His birth, Mary and Joseph went to
Jerusalem to offer Him to the Lord as prescribed by the law of Moses.
This is an episode that fits within the perspective of the People of
Israel’s special consecration to God.” - St. John Paul II
As devout Jews, Joseph and Mary followed the Mosaic Law. Leviticus
12: 2-8 prescribes the ritual a mother must follow after the birth of a child.
In particular, the male child must be circumcised on the 8th day, and after
waiting 33 more days for “purification,” she must bring a sacrifice to the
tabernacle door. A one year old lamb is the preferred sacrifice, but for
those of lesser means who could not afford the lamb, two turtle doves or
two young pigeons would suffice. We read in Luke 2: 21-39, all that
happened during the period of purification leading up to and at the
Presentation of Our Lord at the Temple in Jerusalem.
At the end of the fourth century, a woman named Etheria made a
pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Her journal, discovered in 1887, gives an
unprecedented glimpse of liturgical life there. Among the celebrations
she describes is the Epiphany, the observance of Christ’s birth, and the
gala procession in honor of his Presentation in the Temple 40 days
later. This feast emphasizes Jesus’ first appearance in the Temple more
than Mary’s purification.
The observance spread throughout the Western Church in the fifth
and sixth centuries. Because the Church in the West celebrated Jesus’
birth on December 25, the Presentation was moved to February 2, 40
days after Christmas.
At the beginning of the eighth century, Pope Sergius inaugurated a
candlelight procession; at the end of the same century the blessing and
distribution of candles which continues to this day became part of the
celebration, giving the feast its popular name: Candlemas.

POOL DECK EXPANSION APPROVED
The membership approved funding for an expansion to the
pool deck in response to a proposal put forth by the Board at the
Annual Meeting on January 4th. The pool deck expansion is in
the early planning stages and the Board provided conceptual
plans for two 12-foot wide additions, approximately 84-feet
long, to be added to the deck adjacent to the lap pool. The deck
will be built over the slope between the lap pool and the parking
lot. There was an extensive discussion, with the majority of
comments supporting the project and asking the Board to
consider authorizing an even larger expansion.
The proposal outlined a target range of $75,000 to $125,000
and was passed withanear unanimous vote, with one vote
against the proposal. Project planning will proceed with a site
survey, design development, development of the construction
plans, and submission for the required county permits. The
design development and construction timeline are not likely to
allow for the start and completion of the deck before this pool
season, but membership approval allows the deck’s planning to
proceed for competitive bidding construction in the fall.
Members will be updated as the planning proceeds; as a
reminder, all members are welcome to participate in the process
by attending Board meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each
month or the general Columbus Club meetings held following
the Council meeting on the first Thursday of each month.
LTC IS AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE PUZZLE
There are many financial consultants and retirement
authorities who emphasize the need for a long-term care (LTC)
product for estate preservation and family protection. While
many commercial life insurance companies have gotten out of
the long-term care business, the Knights of Columbus
considers LTC a very important piece of the family protection
puzzle. The Order has been actively offering our members this
product for nearly 17 years without a premium increase on
current policyholders. Members who wisely purchased an LTC
plan from the Knights in 2000 are still paying the same
premiums today. Even better, our LTC coverage is backed by
the full strength of the Order, which remains rooted in our
strong Catholic values. Talk about stability when it counts.
If we have not spoken about your need for LTC coverage
in your family portfolio, please take some time out of your
schedule to meet with us.
Remember, long-term care policies are underwritten based
on your health, and you most likely will never be any healthier
than you are today.

KNIGHT LIFE 5
LOOKING BACK ON NEW YEAR’S EVE - 2017, AND SOME “THANK YOU’S”
Frigid temperatures did not deter 180 revelers from
enjoying the good food, libations, a new band and
dancing at EDW’s 58th annual New Year’s Eve gala.
The purpose of this “that’s a wrap” article is to
express appreciation to those deserving of our thanks.
That said, “Thank You,” to both PGK Chris Bannon
and John Galcius; these two, due to their long
acquaintance with members of the band – “Diamond
Alley,” are responsible for booking that band for
EDW’s New Year’s Eve past, and likely immediate
future. The success of this past New Year’s Eve event
was also due primarily to our much-expanded
planning committee. Not only were Chris Bannon and
John Galcius on our planning committee, and retained
Diamond Alley, but John also volunteered to take full
responsibility for decorating the main hall. John
showed his hidden “master decorator” talents with his
patriotic Red, White & Blue themed decorations.
John was ably assisted by Chris Bannon. Thank you
again, John and Chris.
A new member of our New Year’s Eve planning
committee was Patrick O’Donnell. Patrick and his
wife, Suzannah made major contributions to our menu
by suggesting we try something new: a potato-leek
soup served table-side; their suggestions on side dishes
were also adopted. “Thank You,” Patrick and
Suzannah; we hope you’ll work on next year’s New
Year’s menu. Our expanded planning committee also
included PGK’s Kenny Goss, Art Gamotis and Vince
Long, who all provided input on this successful event.
A successful New Year’s Eve gala could not occur
without the full support and dedication of two sub-
groups within EDW: one being our Columbus Club
office staff: CC manager Peter Silano, Nick Beirne
and Rene Padilla. These gentlemen, particularly Rene,
handled walk-in and call-in reservations as well as
related details. Peter Silano purchased new insulated
pitchers to support the innovative “soup served at
tables” initiative. Thank You Peter, Nick, Rene, and
also Chef Maria and her kitchen crew for a great job.
Last, but far from least, another “Thank You” to the
contingent of EDW Redcoats led by PGK’s Long,
Gamotis, McTeague, and current GK Joe Baker, and
another dozen stalwart Redcoats who spent a good
part of New Year’s Eve serving a very appreciative
crowd. Thank You All!
A highlight of the evening is always the door-prize
drawing. The following 12 local-area restaurants (listed
in alphabetical order) have been contributing generous
gift certificates as door prizes for several years, and did
so again this year:
* Argia’s Italian Restaurant; Washington St., Falls
Church
* Bentley’s Restaurant, Arlington Blvd., Falls Church
* Clare & Don’s Beach Shack, Washington St., Falls
Church
* Dogwood Tavern, Broad St., Falls Church *
Ireland’s Four Courts, Wilson Blvd., Arlington *
Ireland’s Four Provinces, Broad St., Falls Church *
Joe’s Place Pizza & Pasta, Lee Hwy, Arlington
* Ledo’s Pizza, Pub, Restaurant, Leesburg Pike, Falls
Church
* Metro 29 Diner, Lee Hwy, Arlington
* Mylo’s Grill, Old Dominion Rd., McLean
* Outback Steak House, Arlington Blvd., Arlington
* The Locker Room, Broad St., Falls Church
Keep these “friends of EDW K of C” in mind when
dining out during 2018. Ask to speak with the owner/
manager, identify yourself as a member of EDW, and
thank them for their continued support. Pat and I have
eaten at all these restaurants (while collecting door
prizes); they’re ALL quite good! A belated Happy
New Year to All. ~ Bob Muschamp

THE 2018 ANNUAL MEETING RESULTS
The Annual Meeting of the Board of the Columbus
Club of Arlington was held on January 4th in the Main
Hall. The purpose of the Annual Meeting is to give the
membership a chance to vote on a budget, elect board
members, and discuss any topics of need for the Club.
The meeting was to begin with the reading of the
minutes from the 2017 Annual Meeting, but a motion
was made to waive the reading of the minutes. The
Treasurer, Tom Maguire, read the budget narrative
included in the December Knight Life, providing
background on the financial performance of the Club in
2017, as well as a discussion of the budget for 2018.
Following questions regarding financial performance
and the budget, the budget was passed as proposed.
Grand Knight Joe Baker conducted the election for
new officers. There were five Board of Director positions
that expired and were up for re-election. All five Board
members who held terms that expired submitted their
names to run for election at the meeting – John O’Neill
III, Greg Strizek, Jerry Garren, Owen Beirne, and Brett
Smith. With five candidates for five open positions, a
motion was made from the floor to accept the nominees
by acclamation. The motion was seconded, and the five
nominees were elected.
The conduct of the meeting was returned to President
O’Neill. The Board made a proposal for membership
vote regarding an expansion of the pool deck and
requested approval for the project with a cost range of
$75,000-$125,000. Board member DelBuono read the
proposal to the membership, and Vice President Strizek
provided additional background on the project. There
was significant discussion, with much of the discussion
asking the Board to consider a more significant project.
The motion passed with near-unanimous approval; there
was one no vote.
DAILY PRAYER TO END ABORTION
Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life, and
for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know that there
is nothing that destroys more life than abortion. I am ready
to do my part in ending abortion. Today I commit myself
never to be silent, never to be passive, never to be forgetful
of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the pro-life
movement, never to stop defending life, until all my
brothers and sisters are protected, and our nation once
again becomes a nation with liberty and justice not just for
some, but for all. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
There being no further business, the meeting was
closed with a prayer. The full 2018 Columbus Club of
Arlington Board of Directors consists of:
Appointed Directors:
Grand Knight Joe Baker
Deputy Grand Knight John Rovinski
Elected Directors:
Owen Beirne Jr. Bob Dannemiller
Ernest DelBuono Jerry Garren
Larry Harrison Tom Maguire
John O’Neill III Brett Smith
Greg Strizek Bill Wester
The officers for the 2018 Board of Directors will be
elected by the directors at the January 25th Board
Meeting. All Board meetings are held on the fourth
Tuesday of each month at 7 pm on the 2nd floor of the
Council Home and are open to the full membership. All
members are encouraged to attend.
EDW BLOOD DRIVE ON APRIL 15TH
Thank you to all of the donors who turned out for our
October Blood Drive and made it a success. With 33
donors, the number of lives that were saved or assisted by
our members and families is a true reflection of our
council’s commitment to life. EDW hosts 3-4 annual blood
drives, and our goal is to receive 80 or more donations. We
need to do a better job getting the word out at our parishes,
and we’ll do that. Once again, we’re trying to make it
convenient to regularly donate blood and save lives by
coordinating the drives with other EDW events, such as
Family Breakfasts. In addition to advertising in the Knight
Life and posting information around the campus, we’ll
publish the drives in our parish bulletins and station sign-
up tables following Masses at each parish prior to the
drives. You may schedule a donation on-line now by
pasting the following into your browser:

or call INOVA donor services at (1-866-256-6372): 1-
