NOON SHARP!!!
This is one of our coolest events please plan to join us for the annual
Easter Egg hunt. We will meet on the steps of the Council Home at
noon. Please be prompt, this event starts on time and the eggs do not
last long. We will have prizes and food. The Easter bunny will also be
in attendance. See you there on March 26 at noon!
For the families who this will be your first year at the hunt, this is
without a doubt our quickest event! The hunt will be over in less
than three minutes. Please make sure your children are lined up and
ready to run exactly at noon! There will be separate zones for
differing age groups, so bring your newborns!
There will also be games, prizes and snacks inside the mansion for
the hunters. If it’s raining the hunt will be moved inside the main hall.
Let’s not forget that the Easter egg is the symbol of Christ’s
Resurrection. As Jesus rises from the tomb, a chick hatches from
the shell and begins life!

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE
As a council we’ve done many good works of mercy this past year,
and all of our 92 years, but we can always find areas to improve and to
make sure we remain our brother’s keeper. It’s an honor and a privilege
for us to have this incredible campus in the heart of Arlington. When
we moved from our original property across the street from St. Charles
Borromeo in 1951 Bishop Ireton traveled from Richmond to bless our
new home and encourage us to be a center of Catholic activity in
Northern Virginia.
When the county signed off on our purchase of 5115 Little Falls
in May of 1951 the Columbus Club president Vincent Tramonte
said “The property represents the type of quarters we can point to with pride and say
‘this is my Council Home’. ... This home must and will be the fountainhead of Catholic
action. ‘Brother Knight’ must take on its true meaning.”
During this Lenten season we need to re-commit, as a council to continue to honor
the families who made it possible to be here, the leadership who saw the potential in
having this land for Catholic action, and Bishop Ireton for charging us to be examples
of Catholicism in Northern Virginia.
It’s easy for brothers, both blood and fraternal, to bicker and beat each other up over
inconsequential matters. That can be okay, to a point. We need to ensure we don’t go too
far however so that we don’t cross a point we can’t return from. As the Supreme Court
justices do before they hear every case, which is fitting since our namesake was a chief
justice, shake hands with one another and remember we’re in this world together and keep
our focus on our Catholic identity. We’ll continue to heed Bishop Ireton’s and Vince
Tramonte’s desires and serve our fellow knights, parishioners and neighbors.
One of our members, when he was asked by a non-Knight “why would EDW help
out in such a way?”, gave the perfect answer: “Because we can!” So, we’ll continue
doing what we do and more. Why? Because we can!
Vivat Jesus,
John White

MANAGER’S CORNER Peter Silano
March has arrived and spring is around the corner. We survived Blizzard 2016, thanks
in part to our Board President. John O’Neill III, as most know, J III has been removing the
snow from our property year after year, free of charge. Resulting in a substantial savings
for the club. John truly had his work cut out for him this year but as always came out on
top, of the “snow heap” that is. Thank you J III.
Our new Camp Registration Software has proven successful. I continue to receive
positive feedback from our membership and general public alike, praising the ease of the
registration process this season. As always, we continue to improve our services year after
year. Thank you to the following employees and members who assisted in the implemen-
tation of the new software system in record time: Camp Director, Jill Burdick-Zupancic,
Assistant Camp Director, Mary O’Conner, and Special Thanks to A.J. Valinote for tying
together the new software to the KofC website as well as adding the endless changes to
the KofC website.
Many thanks to KofC Member, Steve Woda and Operations Manager, Nick Beirne for
fine tuning the Pool Registration software and staying with it during the registration process.
With spring approaching we look forward to seeing you at our “Taste of Italy”
Supper Club on March 18. Palm Sunday Breakfast on March 20 (the first day of spring)
and our Annual Easter Brunch on March 27. Please make your reservations early as
both the March Supper Club and Annual Easter Brunch fill up quickly. Please find
menus for the above events elsewhere in this publication.

HONOR FLIGHT SPRING SCHEDULE A chance to give thanks!
Honoring our veterans, especially the World War II generation, is a
tremendous act of patriotism and gratitude and it’s a lot of fun to do as
an entire family, as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout troop, a homeroom class
or a soccer team!
It’s real simple and easy to do. Simply show up and line up outside
when the buses arrive and cheer and say thank you to our defenders. Then
come into the building and help hand out and provide drinks to the
veterans. Please arrive at the main hall 20 minutes prior to the
expected arrival times listed below. Stay for 20 minutes or stay for the
duration and help clean up. I guarantee you if you strike up a conversa-
tion with one of the men or women who served in WWII you’ll gain an
incredible appreciation for what they sacrificed to defeat Totalitarianism
and preserve our freedoms.
This is a great way to introduce our children to giving back to our
society and caring for each other. You can encourage the kids to create
posters or thank you cards to give to the veterans.

run for the Columbus Club board of directors. Brett Smith will be
bringing some fresh ideas and insights to the board in helping us
maintain our Catholic mission to serve Northern Virginia.

LADIES U-KNIGHTED NEWS Jo Balsamo Wood
Greetings!!! The snow is finally melting, Spring
Training has begun, and on Sunday, March 13, we “spring forward” by
changing our clocks to Daylight Savings Time. All indications are that
spring is in the air. The time of year when a young man’s fancy turns to
thoughts of love! Local fire departments recommend changing the
batteries in every smoke alarm in your house, as the clocks are set ahead.
After you lose that much-needed hour of sleep, more fun is in store for
you. Later that week is St. Patrick’s Day and St. Joseph’s day, followed
closely by the first day of spring. Say goodbye to winter and say hello to
spring with temperatures slowly rising to greet the vernal equinox on
Sunday, March 20, which coincidentally is also Palm Sunday. To end this
busy month, Easter is on March 27, the last Sunday in March.
Speaking of Easter . . . Ladies U-Knighted wants to help you by of-
fering our beautiful hand-made chocolate, Easter-themed pops to add to
your children’s Easter baskets. The cost of each chocolate pop is $2.00
or three for $5.00. If you would like to place an order, please send an
email to Jo Balsamo Wood at [email protected] with “LUK
Easter Pops” in the Subject line. Please indicate the number and type of
pops you are ordering (Cross, Easter egg or Lamb) in your email (see
photo below). If you miss the chance to pre-order, we will be selling
them at the Annual Easter Egg roll.
SAVE THE DATE and mark your calendars – open to everyone!!!
Join LUK at the Old Council Home on Saturday, April 30, from
1:00 – 3:00 for a Tea Party and Baby Shower to support the
organization “A Woman’s Choice” who give women the opportunity

games for prizes. All are invited; please stop by and join the fun. We are
asking that you donate an unwrapped gift to this event. Suggestion for
tax-deductible gifts include: diapers (newborn – 5), pull-ups, baby wipes,

Jerry Garren PGK, has held the vital financial secretary position
since December, 2004. Jerry took over with a heavy heart, as Gene
Rutherford his predecessor took ill that February.
For over 11 years Jerry has been the Camerlengo of the Edward
Douglass White Council. He has not only cared for the financial
well-being of EDW, he has been the chief advisor on all fiscal
matters and a core advisor along with the trustees and the Past
Grand Knights for all matters when valued informed opinions are
needed by the Grand Knight.
With Jerry’s announced resignation at the January 7 council
meeting we are now looking for our next financial secretary. The
person will be appointed to a three year termby the Supreme Knight,
Carl Anderson with a recommendation from the Grand Knight.
EDW’s Financial Secretary duties are much more intensive for
obvious reasons than a normal council. The duties run the gamut
from maintaining both the Knights of Columbus and the EDW
databases, collecting and depositing dues and donations, working
closely with the treasurer to safely handle the income, deposit and
withdrawals of council funds. Maintaining our council member-
ship rolls, arranging death notifications in The Washington Post,
control of the 500 Club roster. The FS also acts as the Financial
Agent for the Columbus Club of Arlington, Inc. in respects to
collecting the club’s dues.
The duties and responsibilities of a financial secretary are graver
than those of the other council officers hence why the Supreme
Knight, through the Grand Knight, controls the appointments. With
the more serious role comes the understanding that the time
demands for the job are heavy. The Financial Secretary does need to
be available on a continual basis, seven days a week. The Financial
Secretary position is the only council-level office that comes with a
modest compensation package.
Candidates must be a third degree member of the Order, shall
not hold a license or be engaged in the sale of life or health
insurance and cannot have a criminal record.
If you are interested in applying for this key position or have
any questions regarding it please contact the Grand Knight, John
White, via email [email protected]. If you are applying for
the position please send a letter of interest with your qualifications
Those who show an interest or apply will be given a more de-
tailed listing of the job description. Those candidates still showing
an interest will be interviewed in person by the Grand Knight and
designated other senior officers. At the conclusion of the interviews
the Grand Knight will forward a recommendation to the Supreme
Knight in New Haven, Conn. for his consideration of appointment.
Submissions for the position need to be delivered to the
Grand Knight by March 18.
FAMILY NIGHT IS BACK Family night is back, make plans to join us in the mansion on
April 9th. We will have a movie and food for your kids in the
front room, while you enjoy dinner at the bar. $15 per child.
Questions can be directed to Kenny Goss 703 448 0332
KNIGHT LIFE 5
CULTURE OF LIFE The Courage to Step into Life
By Suzanne Tanzi and Alessandra Stoppa
John Foppe is a husband, father, author, painter, motivational speaker,
and executive director of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Born without
arms, he is an outspoken advocate for a “culture of life,” in every state of
health and capacity. He asserts that the current debates are centered around
a misunderstanding about where our value lies:“We live in a world where
our worth is bound up in what we do, and independence is key. But I have
learned in my life that interdependence is the most fulfilling way to live... I
help you; you help me, and together we are more; we are one.” Bringing
this wisdom to bear upon the controversial topic of euthanasia, often
linked to the national abortion debate, he keeps it very simple: “This whole
notion of assisted suicide sells all of ourselves short.” Physician-assisted
suicide occurs when a physician facilitates a patient’s death by providing
the necessary means and information to enable the patient to perform a
life-ending act.
In the United States, physician aid in dying (PAD), or assisted suicide,
is legal in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Vermont, and
Bernalillo County, New Mexico; its status is disputed in Montana. Why
are euthanasia advocacy groups gaining voice and media presence in the
USA? Dirk De Wachter, a professor of psychiatry at the University of
Leuven in Belgium, one of the first countries to legalize the practice,
believes that his country’s approach to suicide reflects a crisis of nihilism
created by the rapid secularization of the popular culture in the past thirty
years. Euthanasia became a humanist solution to a humanist dilemma.
“What is life worth when there is no God?” he said.
Indeed, for the Church, there is no distinction between defending hu-
man life and promoting and supporting the dignity of the human person in
any stage of life. Pope Benedict XVI writes in Caritas in Veritate,, “The
Church forcefully maintains this link between life ethics and social ethics,
fully aware that ‘a society lacks solid foundations when, on the one hand,
it asserts values such as the dignity of the person, justice, and peace, but
then, on the other hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or
tolerating a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated,
especially where it is weak....’” (no. 15)
Dr. Marc Beauchamp, MD, FRCSB ( Fellow of the Royal College of
Surgeons of Canada), has devoted the past five years to an educative effort
to raise awareness in neighboring Canada to combat the looming
euthanasia laws that are moving forward, though last year’s ruling was
stayed by the court and will not take effect until June 6, 2016. Beauchamp,
an orthopedic surgeon living in Montreal, is President of Vivre dans la
Dignité (Living with Dignity), the largest and most active group opposing
euthanasia, and is part of a collective of 616 physicians ready to go to the
Supreme Court should the law pass.
“Education is a work that requires a great deal of time. But this does
not reduce the fact that we are called to face an emergency. If euthanasia
is sanctioned as a ‘right to treatment,’ it could be followed by a request
that everyone have this right.” Given Belgium’s recent approval of eu-
thanasia for minors without age limit, it is evident that this concern is not
mere alarmism.
As in America, future applications of any euthanasia mandate depend
on the vagueness in the law’s guidelines. In the “holes” in the wording of
any law, everything becomes subjective. For examples, what is the exact
meaning of “grave illness” or “unacceptable physical or psychological
suffering” or even “medical aid in dying”?
Beauchamp does not take lightly the Hippocratic Oath, taken by
himself and all doctors upon entry into the medical field. This has been
the foundation of the profession for twenty-one centuries: “I will
prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability
and my judgement and never do harm to anyone. I will give no deadly
medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such council.”
Beauchamp’s efforts are an example to pro-life advocates in the USA,
though, as a committed surgeon and father of seven (some quite young),
the decision to engage in these five years of struggle was not automatic. “It
has been a very demanding battle, and painful as well. However, my
passion is not for the battle, but for the human person, for my relationship
with God, the source of love and openness to myself and others. For me
and my wife, who is an oncologist, it has been first of all an opportunity to
live life as one, united in openness to what we love most, to the presence of
Christ in those we have before us.”
He retains this openness even with the those against his cause. At one
point, he found himself in the national Canadian television station studio
with the Minister of Social Services, Véronique Hivon, the promoter of
the euthanasia law -- the “enemy” par excellence. “We said things that
were diametrically opposed, but after she spoke, I looked her in the face;
I wanted to look well. In that moment, something happened. I realized
that we are all on a journey toward something greater. We make
mistakes – I am certain that this law is a terrible error – but we are on a
journey, both of us, to know the truth of life.” The same dignity he so
desired to protect, for which he battled so fiercely, he saw in her face: the
mysterious journey of the other toward her destiny. That day he went
home happy -- “It was the greatest surprise, after a public ‘clash,’ to find
myself so full of tenderness for her.”
John Foppe echoes this knowledge of and desire for human fellowship
in the struggle, in reaching out to those who might be considering ending
their own lives, and those who support and assist them: “Everyone of us
have conditions that make us feel broken, incomplete. But in the midst of
these conditions, life is still worth living. In such times, have the courage to
step into life!” Coming from John, we are able to read between the lines:
“You are not alone!”

Beauchamp, is a journalist for the international Catholic monthly, Traces.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING
SPECIAL OLYMPICS IN VIRGINIA!! We’re very proud to announce that with your financial support Special
Olympics in Virginia raised over $1,034,954 to fund efforts to provide
athletic competition and support to Virginians with disabilities.
The Virginia Knights of Columbus State Council team was the second
highest fundraiser and the highest non-Special Olympics organization,
raising $21,328. AND with each of your donations EDW was the number
one council on the state team raising $3,333!
Be very proud of our ongoing involvement with Special Olympics and know
that every penny raised at the plunge stays inVirginia to help our families and
neighbors. Some of those terrific athletes are EDW family members.
The Knights of Columbus have always been a major supporter of the
Special Olympics and this is one great way we continue that patronage.
