Deputy Grand Knight’s Report

We had an impressive turn out for the Knights Memorial Mass, which was changed to the General Meeting night in December. It was attended by many members and their wives. Great tribute Scott Weatherdon.

The Children’s Christmas party was a huge hit, with Santa (Jean-Marc)

And Ryan Sandul did a great job as usual.

A great time was had by all that attended the New Year’s Eve Party, organized by our GK Mike Warren and SK Jim Smith. Chinese Food was terrific and plentiful.. Capital Entertainment kept the crowd on their feet the entire night. It really impressed me to see Knights that weren’t able to attend the evening show up to help set up and clean up after the event. Many thanks to all that helped make this evening a hit.

In January, many knights and Fr. Paul turned up to help dismantle the Nativity scene, and help take down the Christmas decorations from the Church.

Community Breakfast January 15, headed by Jim Smith and Wayne Harrison was a great success. It was very well attended after both masses. We even had to go and purchase more supplies before the second mass ended. This was a great success thanks to all those who helped, set up, clean up, serving, and helped to cook the food. Kitchen staff was headed by our Chief Chef Allen Galachiuk, who always pulls off a great meal. During the Masses January 21 and 22nd, Ryan Sandul had volunteers sell mission pins after Masses.

There was a Basketball Free Throw Jan.27.

Winter Carnival Day will be a highlight for February. From 1230-4pm there will be sleigh rides, skating games, baked beans, hot dogs, maple taffy on snow. Looking forward to seeing a great turn out to help out with this event. This event will be lead by Allen Galachiuk and Mike Warren, Dan Burnett and Steve Nother. Let’s see your families out having a great time.

And on a personal note, please wear your name badges so we all can get to know your name.

Exciting times ahead.

Dan Burnett, Deputy Grand Knight

District Deputy Report

The Christmas season is now behind us and we begin the second half of

our Fraternal Year. All our Councils in District 98 will be busy during the

next two months. Breakfasts, dinners, winter carnival and dances. This

is great for our members. An active Council is a successful Council. It is

also a perfect time to showcase the Knights of Columbus and all we do for

our Parishes and the community. It is also an excellent time to attract

new members. Personally invite other couples and Church members to

your functions and make a point of spending some time with them. I

know they will be impressed and will want to join this excellent

organization.

Our Councils are also very involved in Church projects, assisting where

they are needed. St. Pat’s Church is continuing with its restoration. Last

week members and volunteers from St. Martin de Porres began an

extensive project to renovate their own parish Hall. Phase one began with

painting the hall and the two stairwells. Today we installed a protective border around the

basement walls. Up next is the renovation of our washrooms. This is the largest project I

have been involved with since I joined #6217. It has been a lot of hard work but it was also a

lot of fun.

Speaking of projects we would like to begin the District Endeavor that we had to cancel last

November at Waupoos Farm. As soon as the warmer weather arrives and the snow leaves us,

we will ask members from our three Councils to work together and complete some much-

needed repairs at this site.

In the coming months our District will receive one of the Special Olympic Flags that is criss-

crossing the Province. Each Council will have it for a function or meeting. All the flags will be

displayed at the annual Special Olympic Games in the Niagara Region in June. In May our

District will also receive the Icon (large portrait) of the Holy Family. Each Council and Parish

will have this beautiful picture for a one-week period. Service books and prayer cards will be

included with the Icon.

In closing, I would like to thank our Grand Knights and members for their continued support

and assistance. I look forward to seeing you at your monthly meeting and your social

engagements as well.

Fraternally, Barry Nicholls, DD 98.

Your bulletin producers Steve & Larry Thank everyone who contributed to this publication. Without your contribution only a small portion of our Membership would have knowledge of all the great projects our Council is involved in.

The Black Dot One day, a professor entered the classroom and asked his students to prepare for a surprise test. They all waited anxiously at their desks for the exam to begin. The professor handed out the exams with the text facing down, as usual. Once he handed them all out, he asked the students to turn over the papers. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions – just a black dot in the center of the sheet of paper. The professor, seeing the expression on everyone’s faces, told them the following: “I want you to write about what you see there.” The students, confused, got started on the inexplicable task. At the end of the class, the professor took all the exams, and started reading each one of them out loud, in front of all the students. All of them, with no exception, defined the black dot, trying to explain its position in the center of the sheet. After all had been read, the classroom silent, the professor started to explain: “I’m not going to grade you on this, I just wanted to give you something to think about. No one wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone focused on the black do – and the same happens in our lives. We have a piece of paper to observe and enjoy, but we always focus on the dark spots. Our life is a gift, and we always have reasons to celebrate – nature renewing itself daily, friends around us, the job that provides our livelihood, etc. However, we insist on focusing only on the dark spot – the health issues that bother us, the lack of money, the complicated relationships with others, or the disappointment with a friend. The dark spots are very small when compared to everything we have in our lives, but they’re the ones that pollute our mind. Take your eyes away from the black dots in your life. Enjoy each one of your blessings and each moment that life gives you. Be happy and live a life such that even the undertaker will be

disappointed when it is your time to go.

Membership Director

Recruiting new members is essential to the continued growth and well-being of your council and the Order. Offering a man membership in the Knights of Columbus gives him the opportunity to improve his own life and his community. Membership allows him to experience the fraternal bond that Knights share while growing closer to his family and faith.

SK Mike Issa, Membership Director ( P.G.K. F.D.D.)

ARE YOU AN ACTIVE MEMBER?

Or are you just contented That your name is on the list? And mingle with the flock?

Or do you stay away at home And criticize and knock?

Do you ever go to visit A Brother who is sick?

Or leave the work to just a few And talk about the clique?

There’s quite a program scheduled That I’m sure you’ve heard about And we’ll appreciate it if you too

Will come and help us out.

Submitted by SK Bill Country

So come to the meetings often And help with hand and heart

Don’t just be a member But take an active part.

Think this over, Brother,

You know right from wrong. Are you an active member?

Or do you just belong.

Children’s Christmas Party

Brothers many thanks to our Council for arranging this year’s Children’s Christmas party. I know that it was very special for the 4 Syrian Families which attended. Brothers Ryan Sandul and Allen Galachiuk along with Pierre Boucher and his merry men did a great job. The highlight for the kids (including this big kid) was Santa aka Jean-Marc.. un grand merci a tous.
