BROTHER KNIGHTS: Welcome to the new Brother Knights, those that just entered as 1st Degree, 2nd Degree and some that will become full fledged 3rd Degree member of one of the State's finest Councils. The Yaw-Yaw ladies hosted a great annual family event. Thank you for the very best Luau Friday night Fish Fry numbers are up to 150, which is very good for these hot summer nights. Thanks for all the workers that show up to make this a successful event. At our business meeting we approved an item that will help one of our Brothers. Robert Goerisch, needed a wheel chair ramp installed at his front door. John Antonicci was able to acquire an eight foot light weight aluminum ramp which is being installed. Council 5803 now owns a ramp that will last a long time. If any brother knows of a fellow Knight that is in need of any kind of assistance, please contact any of our officers. This is the kind of thing we do. At the annual St. Rose Picnic, the Knights took on the duties of grilling the food items. We received lots of praise on how delicious the hamburgers and hot dogs tasted. Thanks for all the Knights that helped to make this event go smoothly. Thank You Bob Spielman GK

Russ:

I remember frequently telling Gail I had a “tiger by the tail” with this group. There was

such enthusiasm it was contagious. I spent more time running after, than leading. We

had to have a place to meet so we signed a lease on an old red brick schoolhouse on

L.A. Ave, near the Santa Susana post office. We had about $179 in the council fund at

that time and no idea how we would pay the rent. The council activity chairman, Vince

Riccio, told me not to worry; he was planning a Halloween dance. Little did I know he

had already printed up 2,000 tickets and intended to sell them all for $1.00 each. He

rented the roller-skating rink on Valley Fair (it has since burned down) for almost noth-

ing. There was lots of beer, for which we dutifully got a license the week after the

dance. True to his word, we made the rent and had a great dance.

Gail:

We ladies drew up by-laws and designed an installation ceremony for ourselves. The

women had decided they wanted to be helpful to the men, but not take on doing the jobs

the men should do themselves. When the Halloween dance was being planned, they

asked us to decorate. Quite a few women gathered to make ghosts, pumpkins and other

decorations. It seems that when there is a goal, or a need, people come forward to fill it

and become a cohesive force. There were wives, mothers and daughters of Knights in

our Columbiettes group. There was also opposition from some who thought it un-

seemly for women to want to share some part with the Knights. There were rumors that

Russ and I were trying to “take over”. For this reason, I took a back seat and kept a low

profile in the Columbiettes. Later, I regretted doing that.

1920: Two years after launching educational, vocational and employ-ment programs for World War I veterans, more than 50,000 students are enrolled in K of C-sponsored evening school programs across the United States and Canada. The Order also launches a correspondence school. 1920: 235 Knights sail from New York City to France. In Paris, they are greeted by Church and civic authorities, who thank the Knights for their WWI work. In Metz, a large equestrian statue of the French pa-triot Lafayette, funded by the Knights, is unveiled. The K of C delega-tion continues to Rome, where it is received in a private audience with Pope Benedict XV on Aug. 28, 1920. 1923: In response to the passage of laws in Oregon prohibiting children under 16 from attending private schools, the Knights work to overturn the law. In 1925, the Supreme Court declares the Oregon law unconsti-tutional. 1924: In response to a request from Pope Benedict XV, the Knights opens St. Peter’s Oratory, the first K of C recreation center for youth in Rome. Four more are established between 1924 and 1927. 1924: The Order’s anti-defamation work resumes after World War I. The K of C Historical Commission publishes the Knights of Columbus Racial Contributions Series. Three monographs highlighting the posi-tive contributions of African-, Jewish- and German-Americans are pub-lished. 1925: The Knights’ Rome youth work stimulates interest in similar projects in North America, and the Columbian Squires program is es-tablished. Brother Barnabas McDonald consults with the Knights on the creation of the Squires. The institution of the first Squires circle takes place at the Supreme Council meeting in Duluth, Minn. 1926: Supreme Knight Flaherty, Deputy Supreme Knight Martin H. Carmody and other officers meet with President Calvin Coolidge about the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico. The Order launches a $1 million educational campaign to influence American public opin-ion on the need for a strong stand against the Mexican government’s attacks on the Church. It takes more than 10 years for the tensions to ease.

INSURANCE REPORT September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. To help educate con-sumers about the need for and value of adequate life insurance protec-tion, the Life Insurance Market Research Association (LIMRA) has published the following five facts. These statistics are certainly worth considering.

Fact 1: nearly three fourths of North Americans agree that life insurance is the best way to protect against premature death of the primary wage earner.

Fact 2: Twenty-four million households have no life insurance protec-tion at all. Almost one third of adults have no life insurance protection.

Fact 3: Forty-four percent of all households either don’t own life insur-ance and believe they should, or own life insurance and feel they need more. Among those that already own some life insurance, 40 percent believe they don’t have enough.

Fact 4: One fourth of primary wage earners feel they do not have a plan in place to provide a decent standard of living for their family if they died tomorrow. Twelve percent of families would immediately have trouble meeting everyday living expenses and another 15 percent would have difficulty keeping up after several months,

Fact 5: People would like to discuss life insurance with a financial pro-fessional. Consumers feel buying life insurance is an important and complex financial decision. Half of them find it difficult to decide how much to buy, and 43 percent worry about making the wrong decision.

I’d like to meet with you in your home, at your convenience. I’ll work with you to make sure your family is protected. As a brother Knight you can trust, I’ll take the stress and worry out of the buying decision. Give me a call.

Our annual fishing trip is fast approaching. How many times have you said to yourself that you should go on the trip at least once? This trip should be on your bucket list. Start thinking now and be ready when the next trip comes around. The annual Men's KCO (K of C Outdoor Club) fishing trip to the Bishop Creek area of the Eastern Sierra's is be held on the 1st weekend of October (10/1/15-10/4/15). Join me and 40-50 of your Brother Knights, friends, and families for a great weekend. In addition to the South Fork of Bishop Creek that runs through the campground, there are the South Lake, North Lake, Lake Sabrina and Intake 2 fishing areas nearby. The event is held at the Creekside RV Park with campsites, RV sites, and trailers available for rent. You must make your own reservation for sites. They hold a few sites for us but they are first come-first serve. Contact the office at Creekside for a reservation of your desired site. Be sure to tell them that you will be part of our group. They may be reached at 760-873-4483. Activities include a fishing derby with many prizes (adults and kids, de-pending on attendance), a BBQ Tri-Tip Dinner on Saturday Night, and card games almost every night. If we have enough interest and help we may have a Sunday morning breakfast. Beautiful mountain (elevation 8300 ft at the campgrounds) scenery, good fishing (trout up to 5 lbs) and good people. You shouldn't pass it up. Ask anybody that has ever gone, they will tell you what a great weekend it is. This event is open to Council and Assembly members, their families, and friends. We generally have only male guests (let your wives and daughters have a "ladies night out" with other fishing trip widows). Lets hope that the weather, the Edison Company, and assorted others allow for more water into South Lake, Lake Sabrina, and the creeks. Like all of California, the Eastern Sierras need water/rain/snow. Let us pray that our drought ends before we have more serious water shortages and possible ration-ing. Special Note: The pond within the Creekside Campgrounds continues to be under control of the California Department of Fish and Game. They stock the pond on their schedule. All normal Fish and Game laws apply. For more information, please contact me at a Council or Assembly Event or call me. SK Bill Alexander PGK KCO Club Event Chairman 805-527-4720

4TH DEGREE CORNER DEACON’S CORNER Pope Francis’ US Visit In anticipation of Pope Francis’ September visit to Washington, DC, NY and Philadelphia, we are all ears to hear what he has to say. He will make his first stop in Washington on Sept. 24th. The Pope is sure to seize his opportunity when he addresses Congress. He will be the first pontiff to ever address a joint meeting of Congress. He is also to appear on the west front balcony to address the public. There is a lot of speculation of what he will have to say. Surely we will hear about: Climate, change, hunger or taking care of the poor. Will he have something surprising to say? Will he speak frankly but friendly in his US trip? Will he present challenges to the Congress? Pope Francis will next visit Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Fami-lies amid much expectation as to what he will have to say. Anticipation runs in high in Philadelphia for words of papal wisdom about the unit that is the cornerstone of society – the family. The Pope has a leadership style that prompts him to listen before he speaks. He has been listening to what others are saying about family by way of preparation for the upcoming October Synod of Bishops on the family in Rome. His listening could not have missed what the US Supreme Court re-cently said about same sex marriage and what so many younger Catho-lics are saying by word and choice, about cohabitation and contraception. I expect the Pope not only explain but also inspire us on marriage as a vocation. We are likely to hear about marriage being a commitment to permanence, fidelity and openness to procreation. The attentive listener will find much about the mystery and meaning of life in what Pope Francis will have to say on his US visit. I, for one, will be all ears to hear what he has to say. I hope you will to. Let us pray this prayer for a successful visit: A Prayer for the World Meeting of Families - Philadelphia 2015 God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of com-munion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Pray for us! Deacon Terry

POPE NAMES THREE AUXILIARY BISHOPS TO THE ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES

We welcome our new Bishops-elect! It is with deep gratitude to our Lord that we welcome our newly elected-Bishops to the Archdiocese. Fr. Robert Barron, Msgr. Jo-seph V. Brennan and Msgr. David O’Con-nell as auxiliary bishops for the Archdio-

cese of Los Angeles. The new auxiliary bishops will join Archbishop Jose H. Gomez, other auxiliary Bishops, priests and deacons in serving the faithful of the largest archdiocese in the United States. The Archdiocese of Los An-geles comprises three counties in the south-ern part of the state of California: Los An-geles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. The area ex-tends from the northern county line of Santa Barbara County, near the city of Santa Maria, to the southern county line of Los Angeles County. More than 5 million

Catholics live in the archdiocese’s 8,765 square miles. There are 287 parishes lo-cated in 120 cities, seven missions and chapels. Let us keep them in our prayers and may God bless them!

PARISH NEWS ARCHDIOCESE NEWS

St. Rose is Doing its part to Conserve Water St. Rose of Lima is taking an active part in caring for the environment. As we all know, California is in a drought and our parish is doing what we can to help conserve water. If you haven't noticed, we been removing plants, shrubs and trees that re-quire a lot of water and replacing that area with mulch, a product that helps prevent evaporation and keeps the weeds to a minimum, or drought tolerant plants. By replacing sprinklers with drip watering systems and reducing watering times, we have cut our water usage by 35-40%. Ad-ditionally, where we can, our church and school campus is “Going Green.” In an effort to help con-serve on electricity, we are replacing some of our energy burning lights with L.E.D. fixtures. Our church air condi-tioning units are a HUGE consumption of energy but too costly to replace at this time. In the meantime we have in-stalled time clocks so the system will only be used during weekday and weekend mass times and other events. What can you do to help? If you should see a sprinkler watering the sidewalks, a broken sprinkler, a drip system that has been broken, a sink or toilet that runs longer than it should, etc. PLEASE call the rectory and let us know. Although we are working on this continually, sometimes things get over-looked, but with your eyes and ears, we can get it done.

Thank you and God Bless!

Upcoming Knights of Columbus Cruise

When I wrote my article regarding the upcoming cruise I had many questions and I said that I would talk to our travel agent to lay the groundwork for another Knights cruise. I was very nebulous about details as I had not received any recommenda-tions from our potential cruisers. To my surprise I received a call from our travel agent Adeline the next day. She found a cruise on a Princess ship in January 2016 at a great price. The only limitation was that we must signup quickly to get the price. I spread the word and we had 10 couples booking the cruise within 3 days. What a great response!! As of the writing of this article (Aug 19th) we have more booked and we are still getting interest. As of today (still Aug 19th) we have 15 couples and two singles booked. We still have a few more ready to book depending on their personal situations. We could have as many as 20 couples going on the cruise. For those of you that may still be interested I have details that may help you. We sail on Monday, January 18, 2016 returning on Friday, January 22, 2016. We sail on the Crown Princess from San Pedro, a day at sea, stopping in Santa Barbara, then on to a stop in Ensenada Mexico, then back to San Pedro. Most of us booked a Balcony cabin at a price of $604 including the cost of the cruise, port fees, and taxes. Costs could change if you want to upgrade or downgrade to a different class of cabin. Adeline reserved 30 cabins but you must act fast as she cannot hold them too long. For booking and more information call Adeline at "Sweet Ade-line Travel and Tours" 1-818-368-6545 and tell her that you want to be part of our cruise. The information revealed in the undercover Planned Parenthood videos has shocked the na-tion, but the monetization of fetal body parts was an everyday occurrence for Abby Johnson during her eight years as a clinic direc-tor at Planned Parenthood. In 2009, Johnson experienced a conversion to the pro-life move-ment while assisting in an ultra-sound-guided abortion. Since then, she has become a strong advocate for women seeking alternatives to abortion and has founded And Then There Were None (ATTWN), a non-profit organization for abortion clinic workers looking to break from the abortion system.

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT DEPUTY My Brothers of Council 5803, Just a quick note to personally thank some brothers of our council who made our 3rd Degree held at St. Rose of Lima on August 30th turn out so nice. Brother Bob Smith and Brother Mark Griffith worked all morning hooking up the audio and video system used for the degree. It worked flawlessly. GK Bob Spiel-man, Willie Romero, Bob Smith and DGK Tony Demarco and PGK Andy Prete did set up. Brother Michael Mead, DGK Tony Demarco and Nick Wirtz processed the candidates. The State 3rd Degree Team was assisted during the degree by, Bob Smith, Mark Griffith, PGK Earl Todd, GK Bob Spielman, Nick Wirtz, Joey Lo Dolce and PGK Andy Prete. PGK Herman Conant was our photographer and Fred Valdez worked the 4th Degree membership table. During the Degree PGK Bob Spielman, PGK Rick Ostrich, Tony Loniero and Tony Bonomo were busy prepar-ing the lunch. They prepared and served a wonderful lunch to over 100 brother Knights from 10 local councils. Once again the brothers of 5803 came through when called! You guys are the best! Fraternally, PGK Cliff Wirtz District Deputy 79

Brothers, I write this after just coming home from our 3rd Degree exemplification held at St. Rose of Lima in Simi Valley. We had 10 councils represented and 46 men exemplified. My thanks go out to Simi Council 5803 for hosting the event and to the Degree Team who drove many miles to accommodate us. I could not be happier with the way our day went! I also want to thank Moorpark council for doing our 2nd Degree last week. I truly believe we have the best 2nd Degree team around! The cooperative spirit of these men and can do attitude is greatly appre-ciated. Our District Warden Andy Prete and I, along with our wives attended the Los Padres Chapter Installation held at Holy Cross Church in Moorpark. Our Worthy State Deputy Ed Huestes was there to install our new President Michael Ohler. All of the State officers attended. I thank the Grand Knights and council mem-bers in District 79 who took the time to attend. Council 9969 did a super job hosting the State Officers and all the brothers and their ladies. Now that summer is over it is time to get back to work in our councils. As you have all heard me say, membership is not any one brother’s job. It is EVERY brother’s job. Each of our councils needs to build our membership. New mem-bers bring new ideas, new energy and renewed life to our councils. I will do all I can to help you achieve your membership quotas. Our District now has three 1st Degree Teams. If you have any men who want to join our order, let me know and I will have a team ready. Last month I told you about our District raising money to help our brothers in Council 5746. Council 5803 donated $200, Council 9410 donated $300 and Council 9969 donated a set of officer’s jewels. The brothers of Council 5746 are most grateful of the kindness and fraternal friendship shown to them. In Sep-tember, I will ask our other Councils and Chapter to make their motions and get their donations in. Lastly our State Deputy has asked all councils in the state to make the following events a priority for your council. They are, Coats for Kids, Wheelchair Drive for our Veterans, Adopt a Seminarian and the ID (Tootsie Roll) Drive. I will speak at all of your meetings this month on these events. I thank each of you for continued cooperation and kindness shown to me at your meetings. May God bless you and your loved ones and may He comfort any of you in physical or mental distress. Cliff Wirtz District Deputy – 79 805-208-8970 [email protected]
