Knights LogST. RAPHAEL COUNCIL 10157

From our Grand Knight

There are various things that make me proud to be a Grand Knight for St. Raphael Council 10157. Here are a few:

I trust my brothers in Christ who are committed to make the council a success. It is the brothers’ contribution and dedication in creating events to help achieve our goals. Charity is the first principal of our order and as Catholic men it is our duty help the people in the community and the church.

As a Knights of Columbus member. the love and faith in Jesus and Virgin Mary brought together men from various backgrounds who share a common purpose. I have met many good men and their wives and we have become good friends. Whether drinking coffee or having a pancake breakfast, we always have fun.

Knightline, a monthly newspaper printed by Supreme office of the Knights of Columbus, reports that the knights have set a record for charity in 2013. Knights donated more than $170 million and 70.5 million volunteer hours. During the fraternal year 2013-2014, Council 10157 was committed to help and support the church, communities and other ministries. We enjoy being part of the action. One of our goals is to become the manpower for the church. We want Fr. Tim and Deacon Jim to know that we are here to help and they can count on the men of the Knights of Columbus.

In the coming year, we will continue strengthening the relationship with other ministries, and support church and school projects. We are going to create more signature events such Super Sub, Pinellas Hope, and the new Italian “Knight” Dinner. We are back on schedule with the pancake breakfast, an event that the parishioners enjoy.

Finally, we want to welcome Fr. Kevin Mackin to our church and to the council. Fr. Kevin is a third-degree member and he agreed to be the council chaplin. We will continue the effort to grow in membership by bringing Catholic men to the order. I am proud to be a knight because we are making a difference.

A brief look at the service activities of our Brother Knights

Snoopy gets!a dog house!

Brothers Don Mattick and Tony d’Abramo helped out the recent St. Raphael Catholic School production of You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown by building set pieces for the musical based on Charles Schultz classic comic strip. They constructed blocks for the characters to sit and stand on and a dog house for Snoopy. !

The pieces had to be light so that they could be moved easily but sturdy because there would be dancing on them as well. !!Hoopsters go to Regionals!

The Knights Of Columbus, Council 10157, sponsored a third year of the boys and girls Basketball FreeThrow Championship on January 11 at the St. Raphael Parish Center. There were nine winners who moved on to the District competition.!

St Paul's hosted the Districts on January 25. The St .Raphael contingent did very well, with six who took first place and three who placed second. It was a “family affair”

We congratulate all who represented St. Raphael School and our Council so well and wish them all success in the Regional competition to be held at St Pete Catholic on March 15, 2015.!

We especially thank Coach Brian Shaffer for his continued support of the Basketball Championship and Soccer Challenge events.!

Knights in ActionA brief look at the service activities of our Brother Knights

It’s pancake time again!!It’s September again, so it was time whip up the batter, roll out the sausages, pour out the coffee and get the Free Pancake Breakfast under way again as the activities of the fall season in St. Raphael parish are gearing up for action after a summer of family fun and traveling for many parishioners. Jane Winstead caught brother knights on duty the first Sunday in September for the monthly event.

Birthday girl!Even though it was her

birthday, GiGi Deneault had to be there to help build the Super Bowl Super Subs in February (see story, page 6) and to teach the team how to do it right. However, there wasn’t a chance that she was going to miss out on her birthday celebration. Brother Connie, her loving husband, saw to it that there was a cake to mark the occasion. The Super Sub team sang Happy Birthday and joined in the festivities during a break. !

The Knights of Columbus, St. Raphael Council, recently hosted their first ever Super Subs for Super Bowl fundraising event at St. Raphael. The proceeds will benefit the Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center, for the purchase of a state-of -the-art ultrasound machine.

Knights enthusiastically took orders and accepted donations for Italian sub sandwiches after Masses on the two weekends preceding Super Bowl Sunday.

For a $6 donation, parishioners and friends could order a sub consisting of a 12-inch hoagie roll, ham, capicola, salami and provolone cheese. A variety of condiments were available “on-the-side” when the subs were picked up in the Parish Hall after Masses on Super Bowl Weekend, February 1 and 2. Condiments included chopped lettuce, sliced tomatoes, chopped black olives, banana peppers, mustard and mayonnaise.

The most fun part of the project seemed to be making the subs. The Knights pulled together on Saturday, February 1 to make them. After a false start because of a minor

set-back in the morning, the Knights re-assembled in the afternoon in the Parish Center. Using a smooth, efficient and well-orchestrated assembly line process, they made more than 250 subs in a couple of hours. The entire event was truly a team effort and

resulted in raising more than $900 for charity. The Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center was thrilled to receive the donation. Many thanks to all Brother Knights for your generosity and hard work in support of this charity event.

the project from initial planning, to sandwich making, through final distribution of the last sub Sunday evening. The committee members were Grand Knight Jorge Antunez, Deputy Grand Knight Tom Doyle, Brother Roy Smay and his wife Dottie, Brother Terry Winstead, Brother Connie Deneault and his wife Gigi and Brother Walt Miller.

Special thanks to Brother Terry Winstead, who, in addition to those efforts previously mentioned, hosted a sandwich-tasting evening for the Planning Committee and took the lead for logistics, including the vitally important sandwich refrigeration details.

Extra special thanks and recognition to Brother Connie Deneault and Gigi Deneault for their tireless, non-stop commitment and work in support of Super Subs. In addition to his involvement on the Planning Committee, Connie took the lead on all aspects of the sandwiches, from shopping for ingredients, price comparisons and discounts, ordering, pick-up and delivery. Connie and Gigi did a huge amount of advance work in slicing the

condiments and preparing the meats and cheese for sandwich assembly. They orchestrated the sandwich assembly line and were instrumental to the success of the entire evolution. You may also have noticed that they ran the condiment table for sandwich distribution, as well. Their time, attention to detail and concern for the project was

astounding. Please support following firms that also supported us with discounts or free items that helped increase the amount available for charity: GFS, Publix, City Produce and Chick-Fil-A. Finally and most importantly, we offer our heartfelt thanks to all parishioners and friends who

generously donated to the event for the benefit of the Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center ultrasound machine. Thanks to them, the success of the event was assured.

This fundraiser certainly epitomized the Knights of Columbus Principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity.

Remember –Why cook on Super Bowl Sunday in 2015. Be on the lookout – we plan to make this an annual event. The Knights will be ready with Super Subs in time for next year’s Super Bowl.

Thanks again everyone for your support!

By tradition, Knights Councils have for years produced spelling bees. It makes sense. Its a way of giving back to the parish community, of fostering education and youth development. !!With that in mind, Council 10157 brothers approached St. Raphael Catholic School principal Kathy Bogataj about a parish spelling bee. !!As it happened, Mrs. Bogataj and parent Heidi Sutton had already been discussing the possibility. and now here were the Knights offering to provide the manpower to make it happen. The first-ever St. Raphael Spelling Bee was held in February. By all accounts, it spelled S-U-C-C-E-S-S! Enjoy the photos.!

The Council grows rapidly and become a vital part of the parish and community in a very short time

Knights Log

Our first two years

nights of Columbus Council 10157 has recently completed its first 2-1/2 years at St. Raphael parish. We began

to recruit and organize in the FALL of 2011 and were granted our official Council Charter, now mounted in the Parish Hall, in September of that year. We are a fraternal organization of Catholic men, in service to our Church, Youth, Community, and Nation. The principles of the Order are Charity, Unity, and Fraternity, Charity being the central focus of the Knights of Columbus.

Our original objectives were to increase membership; to smoothly integrate the organization into parish life, supporting existing church and school ministries wherever possible; and, through fundraising events, to provide support to youth and community organizations providing services to the poor and otherwise disadvantaged among us.

We began with 32 charter members and have grown steadily to our present membership of 70 Brothers. Council 10157 received a special award at the Florida State convention in May 2012 for record first year membership growth of 733 per cent, due, in no small part, to the efforts of Brother Wendell Winstead, our first Membership Director.

Our Brother Knights are active throughout the parish as ushers, lectors, and eucharistic ministers, in the Choir and Praise Band, as

instructors in RCIA, Baptism, Confirmation, and Marriage preparation. Brother Knights sit on many parish and Diocese committees.

Brother Don Mattick runs the narthex gift shop with the assistance of Brother Vinny Marceano and his wife Cherie. In 2013, Brother Bill Condon, assumed the presidency of the St. Vincent DePaul chapter from Brother Bill Reidy, who held the position for more than twelve years. Past Grand Knight Tom Doyle serves

on the Bishop’s Advisory Board for the Abuse of Minors and Vulnerable

Adults and the planning committee of the Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center.

With the leadership of Bothers Bill Condon, Bob Hargrove, and Bob Musselman, we held our first Parish Pancake Breakfast on September 23, 2012. This event provides an excellent opportunity to build fellowship and has become very popular. It is now hosted by the Council on the first Sunday of every other month.

Brother Dave Bach leads in hosting coffee and donuts on alternate first Sundays after the 9:30 a.m. Mass. We introduced poker to the CCW Card Party; took ads in their Cook Book and Convention Program; and, provided manpower for their annual Rummage Sale. On November 11, 2012, we co-sponsored, with the CCW, the Parish 50th Anniversary Picnic. In March, 2013, the Council organized a presentation on the

Shroud of Turin, with 100 parishioners in attendance. Brother Connie Deneault holds the position of Director of Youth Activities and is responsible for

coordinating youth programs with the School and Youth Ministry. We conducted our first K of C Soccer Challenge in September, 2011, and added the Free Throw Championship in January, 2012. Principal Kathy Bogataj and Coach Brian Shaffer have been very supportive of our efforts and both competitions have become annual events. and Rick Brooks have been judges in the Diocesan Science Fair finals hosted by St. Raphael School the past two years.

The Council has provided the manpower to operate the Raffle Booth at the St. Raphael Festival in October each year. In 2013, 20 Knights provided 120 volunteer hours at the festival. The Council has also sponsored a

hole at the Home and School Golf Tournament the last two years. Brother Mike McBride has been the Scoutmaster of St. Raphael Troop 219 for more than ten years and contributes more than 1,500 volunteer hours every year. His sons, Chris and Louis, both Knights, as well wife Becky, are also heavily

involved in scouting at St. Raphael. Brother Chet Ugan has been the Chartered

Organization Representative from St. Raphael parish for ten years.

Brother Ted Scarpino has volunteered time beyond counting to our youth and has handled the “front-end” organizational details of the Lenten Fish Fry, which is held five

Fridays during Lent. The team of Bob Hargrove, Bob Musselman, and Bill Condon handle the deep fryers and six to eight “runners” handle the support chores while Brothers Roy Bubb, Connie Deneault, and Rick Brooks take care of the cleanup. We also contribute to the Youth Ministry trip to Washington, D.C., for the annual National March for Life.

Council 10157 is also very involved in the support of community organizations. In 2011, we spun off from St. Petersburg Council 2105 and have maintained close ties since. We partner with them to organize the Pinellas Hope Dinner at St. Raphael Parish Center every year in the fall. Pinellas Hope is a ministry of Catholic Charities that provides shelter and rehabilitation services to the homeless in the county. In the last two years, we were able to raise $6,200, from this fundraising dinner, to further their work.

We have also partnered with Council 2105 in manning concession booth at Tropicana Field for Rays baseball games. This project has been our biggest fund raising effort, by far. Proceeds have allowed us to provide financial support to such activities and organizations as Pinellas Hope, St. Vincent DePaul, Food for Families, Scouts, Home & School Association, Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center, and St. Raphael School and Church.

Our latest project is to provide funds to purchase, with matching funds from the K of C Supreme Council, a state of the art 3D-4D ultrasound machine.

Feeding the hungry has been a goal of the Council from the beginning. We conducted our first Food for Families collection and distribution of non-perishable foods in August of 2011. We provided $575 as a “startup fund” for the parish St. Vincent DePaul Mustard Seed Ministry. Brothers Jorge

Antunez and Rob Miller delivered meals to needy households on the south side last summer as members of the Mobile Meals for Children team.

The Citizens with Disabilities Campaign (aka Tootsie Roll Drive), conducted each winter, supports our neighbors with intellectual and physical handicaps. More than 20 men participate and contribute about 100 volunteer hours to the collection each year. Over the last two years we have contributed more than $1,000 each to Morningstar School, PARC, Special Olympics, and Wounded Warrior Project.

St. Raphael Council has had the opportunity to contribute to disaster relief for victims of the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Hurricane Sandy in the northeast in 2012, and the devastating typhoon in the Philippines in November 2013.

Our Council received the third place trophy for Excellence in Community Activities and another third place Trophy for Excellence in Public Relations at the State Convention in May, 2013.

Respect for life from conception to the end of natural life is a prominent theme of the Church and the Knights of Columbus. Our members participate every fall in the 40 Days for Life Vigil and help collect for the Foundations of Life Baby Bottle Boomerang project. We have helped organize, fund, and conduct their annual Walk for Life fundraiser. We also have provided diapers and wipes to the Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center.

In a few short years, Council 10157 has become a dynamic and integral member of the St. Raphael family of ministries, and prominent in the community. Under the able leadership of Grand Knight Jorge Antunez, we intend to continue our growth and expansion of our efforts in furtherance of God’s work.

Family Italian “Knight”By T. Allan Smith

When Brother Vinny Marceano was a parochial school kid in Gary, Indiana, his dad worked hard on spaghetti dinners and other church projects. An indelible childhood memory of his dad toiling alongside the nuns in the parish kitchen, triggered by an old photograph, was the catalyst for a new signature event for Council 10157.

Brother Vinny heads up a committee creating the first annual Italian Family “Knight” dinner on September 20 in the Parish Center. The evening promises to be a gala occasion with a traditional Italian dinner, music and plenty of fun.

If the lively, food-laden committee meetings are any indication, the real event will be festive indeed. Vinny is working closely with his wife,

Cherie, Connie and GiGi Deneault, Tom and Marie Machuga, and Don Mattick to bring the evening to life. At a recent committee meeting over Caprese salad and sloppy joes, banter reigned and the committee members discussed the upcoming evening.

The dinner idea developed after the council decided to no longer

participate in working a Papa Johns booth at Tropicana Field during Tampa Bay Rays games, said Council Warden Connie Deneault. Something else was need to raise money to fund council charities. It needed to be a project that promoted the Knights’ focuses of charity, unity, and fraternity.

At first, they were talking about a spaghetti dinner, Cherie said, but then ideas started to develop. Vinny recalled sitting in his home office

one day and inexplicably picking up a family photo album his mother had assembled years ago.

“I’m not a person who likes to look at old stuff but for some reason I picked up a book and opened it up and there’s a picture that was taken of my father doing the spaghetti dinner. Now I must have been maybe six, seven. My father worked two jobs so it was a thrill to go anywhere.”

Where they went was to the local parish, where his father was always immersed in one church project or another. As Vinny mulled over those fond memories, he became convinced that the project should be a dinner. But not a spaghetti dinner like his dad had work on. Too ordinary. Everybody does spaghetti dinners.

No, this dinner had to be special, Vinny thought. Different. He thought about it, discussed

it. Finally, it was settled. It would be baked ziti. The idea lay dormant among brother Knights for a time but then it seemed to gain momentum, and, before long committee members began to see genuine enthusiasm for the project.

No one was more enthusiastic than Vinny’s wife, Cherie, who described the preparation process in reverential terms. The slow cooked rich

tomato sauce will begin on Friday night before the Saturday event. It’s from a family recipe and the ingredients are similar to what you put into lasagna, except for no meat. That means onions and peppers and garlic and various herbs. Ahhh! Can’t you smell the aroma already?

Page 27: KNIGHTS LOG -- Fall 2014

While the sauce simmers Saturday morning, the sausage and meatballs will be started. They’ll be served on the side so anyone who prefers a meatless meal can skip them.

“You can’t go wrong with baked ziti,” opined Vinny. “If something is good, it’s well worth waiting for.”

Meanwhile, Marie Machuga, a talented graphic designer, has been working tirelessly creating the menu poster, billboards promoting the event, and scores of table decorations. She’s also planning the general room decor for the evening. Other committee members are securing gift baskets and other items to be raffled off or presented as door prizes, arranging for beer and wine, which will be available for a donation, and other things to drink.

Don Mattick, a veteran of parish projects such as this for decades, is handling ticket sales. He noted that if all members of the Council 10157 buy two tickets, the project goal will be easily

reached. Add to that enthusiastic support from parishioners and you’ve got the makings of a very successful signature event.

Signature event? One of three major fund-raising events of the year. Council leaders see these events as the keys to success. The Super Bowl Super Sub project has already proven to be a winner with its debut in January. Count on it making a return engagement when the Super Bowl rolls around again. Then get ready for fun when Las Vegas springs to life in the Parish Center with a fun-filled night of roulette tables, poker tables, and plenty of chances to satisfy your inner Archie Karas.

Italian Family “Knight” dinner then completes the trio, with an emphasis on the social gathering of the parish family, the sharing of good times, and, of course, the food. “That’s why we want to make it like a family night,” said Vinny, “because if you know an Italian family, you never

leave the house hungry.” Buon appetito!
