Welcome to the On-line Resource of ‘Know Your London’images and PDF documents !

Adrian Prockter has been researching the history of Londonand lecturing on the subject for over half a century. In thattime he has collected a vast resource of printed material andtaken over 7,000 slides. Of recent times (since 1996 whendigital cameras first became commercially available) he hastaken over a quarter of a million images. Most of the printedmaterial has been converted into digital images, along withthe more important slides in his collection.

While working on research projects about the history ofLondon, Adrian has also lectured to adults and, in doing so,has compiled over 150 lectures - over 50 of them related tospecific areas of Inner London and the rest concentrating onsubjects related to London, like the River Thames, Canals inLondon, Coaching Inns and Modern Architecture, to name buta few.

Until October 2010, all his knowledge was imparted byweekly lectures or Saturday Schools. The lectures were

accompanied by Pack (printed on A4 pages) of information, summarising the material in the lectures. Now that he presentsless lectures, the material is being put On-line. Some of it isfree to access. However, there are many other images and PDFdocuments that are also available on payment of an annualsubscription.

All the material has been produced by Adrian. It is originalwork and nearly all the images used to illustrate the Packswere taken by him. Because may subjects are best explainedusing maps, Adrian has produced many maps of Inner Londonhimself and they are also available in this Resource.

They are all stored on a part of the ‘Keep and Share’Website called ‘Know Your London’. Because the ‘store’ onlylists the images and PDF documents in folders, the layout canbe hard to follow. For this reason, this PDF presents all theimages and PDF documents in the large Resourse in a visualway.

Introduction

The material on the ‘Keep and Share Website’ is storedaccording to its type. All the material in the Resource is eitheran image or a PDF document.

There are, therefore, folders storing ‘Images’ and otherfolders storing ‘Documents’. Some of the images are related tothe PDF documents so, just storing the Resource in this way isefficient for the Website but not very helpful for the user.

The following pages list ALL the images and PDFdocuments stored on the ‘Keep and Share’ Website. Imagesrelated to PDF documents are shown on the same page in thisIndex but they are not stored in that way on the Website.

If you have not subscribed to the annual membership, youwill see images and PDF documents listed in this Index butyou will not find them in the Folders. This is because there areadditional folders which are only available to members.

This Index is divided into two sections:

(1) Six-Year Course - Pages related to the ‘Know YourLondon’ course, covering the whole of Inner London.

(2) Additional Material - Pages giving the background toseveral subjects as well as ‘In Depth’ pdf documents, onvarious London topics; Posters, which are PDF documentscarrying very large images in the form of pictures orpanoramas; and Wallpaper, with various sizes of image to suitdifferent screen sizes on your computer.

Index

Pictures, like the one on the left, showan A4-size pdf document (21 x 30 cm)which is reproduced 14% of full size.

All documents are reproduced 14% ofactual size so that relative documentsizes can be compared. Occasionally pdfdocuments are shown 10% of originalsize where their size is exceptionallylarge.

A red bar across the documentindicates that it is supplied in A4 paper

format. The document can only be obtained by additionalpayment. Other pdf documents are free and are available inelectronic form to download.

A blue bar across the document advises the user that thepdf relates to a map (which is sometimes also supported by animage).

A document shown blank (usually in grey) indicates that it isin the process of being written.

Documents

Images, also reduced by 14%, areshown on the same page (under theheading ‘IMAGES’).

Images relate to pdf documentson the same page and give furthervisual information for a particularpdf ,but in greater detail.

The Six-Year CourseThe layout of this part of the index relates to a six-year

course during which lectures were given relating to thewhole of Inner London. The full syllabus is listed in a pdfcalled ‘KYL Six Year Course’, to be found under ‘London(general)’.

Although the lectures are not being conducted in thesame way as they were in the 1990s, the format is still beingfollowed and the subject material is divided up as if it wasstill in the original format.

In year 6 we complete the study of the City of London.Although the City of London is very small in size, whencompared to the rest of Inner London, the amount of historywithin the ‘square mile’ is vast.

This year we look at the ward on the far west of the City’sboundary. The largest ward in the City, it is called FarringdonWithout, a name meaning ‘without’ or outside the old RomanWall. This ward is so large that it is divided into two parts, forthe purposes of lecturing - (1) an area called Smithfield whichis made up of Farringdon Without on the east side of old RiverFleet, along with another ward called Aldersgate, and (2) anarea called Fleet Street which is the remaining part ofFarringdon Without, an area lying on the west side of the oldRiver Fleet. This second area also covers much of Holborn.

The two ‘key lectures’ are supplied in the form of a Pack, published in A4 paper form. To support each pack, there are

On-Line resources. The first is a pdf of modern maps, speciallyproduced by Adrian to show the location of all the places ofhistoric interest superimposed on a modern street map. Thesecond is a large pdf carrying a section of London’s first map -the so-called Agas map, produced about 1561. All theinformation in this latter pdf is the result of original research, carried out by Adrian over many years.

In addition, there are three images supporting theSmithfield Pack and two images supporting the Fleet StreetPack.

History Packs: The full history of each Area of Study is toldin an A4 printed pack (Shown above with the other PDFdocuments). It describes all the famous people connected witheach area and the background to each building. They are£7.00 each, available from Adrian Prockter.

St Marylebone(Story)

Paddington(Story)

This year we look at the most northerly part of the City ofWestminster. Until 1965, the City of Westminster was an area ofland spread across Pimlico and Belgravia in the south, extending across Piccadilly, Hyde Park, Mayfair, Soho andWhitehall in the middle and reaching to Oxford Street andland around the Strand at its northern boundary. This is allshown on a map in the ‘IMAGES’ on the previous page.

To the north of Oxford Street was the separate MetropolitanBorough of St Marylebone. To the west was another separateMetropolitan Borough of Paddington. When the GreaterLondon Boroughs were created, in 1965, St Marylebone andPaddington were added to Westminster.

Today, we think of three ‘Westminster’ definitions. There isthe more familiar small area around the Houses of Parliamentand Westminster Abbey that was the original ‘Westminster’.

In 1900 the Metropolitan Boroughs were created and theMetropolitan Borough of Westminster (more correctly calledthe City of Westminster) included all the land as far north asthe south side of Oxford Street as well as land around theStrand and Covent Garden.

The, as has been explained, in 1965 Paddington and StMarylebone were added, forming the London Borough ofWestminster (also more correctly called the City ofWestminster). This year we look at the most northerly part ofthe City of Westminster. Additional MaterialIn addition to the areas lists in the highly structured

format of the Six-Year Course, there are other pdf documentsand images relating to other aspects of London. In general, they support the material already being provided and coveraspects of London by subject, rather than by geographicalarea.

The ‘In Depth’ Packs cover various topics related toLondon. Some are general topics, like Roman Road andMaps of London. Others give additional information toplaces of interest covered in the Packs, but expand the topicwith more emphasis on images than can be included inthose Packs.

‘Newsletters’ are produced once each academic term(around September, January and April). They give news ofwhat is happening in London. On the back page, dates ofevents going on within the Know Your London group.

‘Posters’ are large pdf documents carrying extra largeimages. Since Adobe is a very versatile reader, it isconsidered better to supply the image in a pdf format ratherthan a simple image.

‘Wallpapers’ are a collection of topical images, suppliedin sizes to fit the screen of most computers. According towhat is called the ‘resolution’ of your screen, you will need aparticular size of image to fill the screen. Examples are 1280x 768, 1280 x 800 and 1440 x 900 pixels. Some screens haveother resolutions but the three quoted are the common ones.

Once you know the size of image that you require, justdownload it from the Keep and Share Website and set it asyour wallpaper.

The images are stored in a folder called ‘Pp Bart Small’. In1965 the 28 Metropolitan were combined to form just 12London Boroughs. It is therefore not possible now to findmany of the old Metropolitan boundaries on modern streetmaps.

At the moment there are six pages which have beenreproduced from the very heart of London. Additional sheetswill be added as time goes by.
