www.greenmap.org.

It’s a way of getting avisual picture of whatgreen spaces, culturalplaces and environmental projectsare going on in a community. If we tried to do it ourselves it would takea long time, so we willbe asking other peopleto help us out along theway. As part of theprocess we will also besetting up mapping stations on streets atvarious points aroundKnowle West in February

and March (dates andplaces to be advertised)so that people who livein different parts ofKnowle West will be

able to add their knowledge and information to the map.The idea is then to havethe map published as aguide for everyone tohave and to enjoy allthe great green spaces, cultural places and environmental projectsthat we have on ourdoorstep. A digital version will also be puton the

Spring should be well-and-truly sprung by now,but don’t despair – if you haven’t started workon your veg garden yet, there’s still time to getgoing. Have a look through seed catalogues – this is best done on a cold, wet, dark evening, when you can stay indoors and enjoy a hotdrink (or a glass of last year’s home-brew, perfick!). Decide what you want to grow, whatyou and your family actually like to eat andremember, you will get better value-for-moneyby growing fruits and vegetables which areexpensive to buy in the shops.

Don’t forget, if you think you will never manageto grow 3kg of pre-packed seed potatoes, whynot share the pack with a friend or neighbour?Better still, buy your seed potatoes and peas, etc. loose, some hardware shops still do this.Plan where to sow: If your garden faces Southor West this shouldn’t be a problem; but if yourgarden is very shaded it could be.

Arrange your crops so the taller plants (e.g.beans) are at the ‘back’ and smaller salads andsuchlike are nearer the ‘front’ (facing South).Harvest rainwater, and use it carefully – or emptyyour bath water onto the garden. I once lost awhole sowing of root vegs to a young spanielwho loved to dig. If, like me, you have pets –why not consider growing your edibles in containers? I’m going for tumbling tomatoes inhanging-baskets this year.

OK, that’s your veg garden started. Put in yourseed potatoes, onion sets and broad beansnow; then think about cabbages, root vegetablesand salads. Water when it’s dry and weedwhen it’s warm, and you can’t go wrong.

My Top Tip for April – Start your Runner Beansoff in the greenhouse (or a warm window-sill)mid-month and plant out as soon as the dangerof frost is over, play crafty, get a head-startover seeds going straight into cold soil in May.

I volunteer for the Mede gardening group, to get involved ringme at the Mede on9041220

The new building will bemade of straw panels - limerendered to make it fire andweatherproof and draw incarbon dioxide. Other plansinclude a solar thermal waterheating system, a boiler thatuses scrap wood instead ofgas, kitchen worktops madeof recycled plastics, such asmobile phones, wellies, andtoothpaste tubes, recycleddenim jeans for insulationand rooms made of materialsthat suck heat out duringhot weather, and reflect heatback in during the cold.

SUCCESS FOR GOLDILOCKS ASBO AND THE THREE BEARSWORDS MMaarrkk LLee LLeeiivvrree Local Resident

It all started for me back in August2006. Flicking through the KnowleWest newsletter I saw just what I’dbeen looking for.

A panto was going to be staged inmy area. Being interested in filmsand plays I knew I wanted to be apart of this production. So I rangthe number and went to a meeting. There were lots were other peoplewho felt the same as me so I wasmade to feel right at home. Idecided I wanted the challenge ofmaking the props so I took on thejob of making the Bears house.Three sets of beds, Christmas pud-dings and chairs, a large papermachetree plus mushrooms and plantsfor the Filwood forest. I was alsovery happy to be asked to undertakethe lighting on the day. I cameaway from the meeting feeling greatat last I was going to be involvedin something I wanted to do andall I had to do was volunteer.

We met weekly to rehearse andiron out any problems, everybodywas so helpful. I was even given abudget that would allow me to makemy designs a reality. This is great Ithought, being taken seriously, trusted to do a good job by people

who were relying on me. I had greatfun sourcing all my materials fromlocal suppliers and my props startedto take shape, giving me a greatfeeling of achievement.

The encouragement I received fromother members of the productionwas tremendous and the responseI received made it all the hardwork very worthwhile.

At last the big day arrived and wehad two performances. The firstshow was for local playgroups andnursery children. Trying to teachpositive values and characterbuilding values to the youngsters. It was lovely to see their littlefaces and hear their little voices. The performance went really well no one forgot their lines and wehad no technical problems.

Then came the evening performance,400 in the audience, and raucousit was with Betty Bad really goingfor it and winding up the audiencefor all she was worth - in particularsingling out our labour CouncillorChris Jackson and making fun outof his shirt much to the enjoymentof the audience. The final curtainfell to fantastic applause, Chrisjumped up on stage thankingeveryone who took part.

The panto worked in two ways, amessage was sent out to the kidsabout being good and trying to dothe right thing in their area and howa group of people with all kinds ofproblems can come together makefriends and overcome difficulties.

The £97 raised was donated toSalvation Army at Padstow rd. The cast and crew would like tosay a big thank you to the followingwithout their help none of thiswould have been possible; theScarman Trust who kindly donatedthe money for the production,Neighbourhood Renewal, and thelocal Police Force. THANK YOUfrom everyone concerned. Performed by Knowle WestBreastfeeding group. For moreinformation contact Rachael on0117 9031788
