From the ManseSummer holidays are approaching and from talking with many of you I get the impression that some of you can’t wait for the holiday to arrive. It is now just over 6 months since we arrived in Arbroath and since I have been inducted to this charge. On the one hand the time seems to have gone by very quickly and in many respects it feels we have been here for longer, in particular as we got to know some of you well. On the other hand, despite my best intentions, I feel that I have not yet been able to get to know more of the members of both congregations better, and this makes it feel we are still new here. Nevertheless I feel that in this short time in both congregations we are continuing to make small steps together in building up our relationships with each other and at the same time seeking to grow in our faith together as we share in the gospel and support each other, and as we witness God’s love in action to others. I am looking forward to continue building with you upon what it is already here and move forward with both congregations. In the following months we will be starting to look at developing a new vision for both churches and as a result we will need to consider a number of important decisions for both churches to help us move forward in faith. Despite the holidays the coming months are busy in the life of both our churches. In June we have the Medieval Fete, the Year of Light Ecumenical service at the harbour (where we might even get a glimpse of the Olympic torch). In July we will have a Holiday Club during the week of 18-22 July, where we expect to have a good number of kids coming to explore together, through games crafts and fun, the treasure of life. Then in August we will mark the 400th

Session News On the 12th of this month we had a fairly lengthy meeting when Sheila Smith read a report from the Mother & Toddler group, who are now meeting in our hall. They are progressing very well with a good attendance and a waiting list---so much so they are enquiring about another session! Thanks were given to all the volunteers.Unfortunately Ruth McCormack has resigned as Safe-Guarding officer, owing to family commitments. Thanks were given to Ruth for her services. Yvonne Logue very kindly offered to fill the position.Alistair Vannet has been appointed Youth Representative for Angus to the General Assembly. We wished him well and look forward to hearing of his experiences. There are many social events planned for the next few months. WORLD MISSION STAMP APPEAL I am writing to thank you for the used stamps which you have kindly sent. Please thank everybody involved in collecting these stamps and their continued support and hard work. In 2010 we raised just over £2000 can we make that over £3000 in 2012? This year the appeal is raising money for the Mount Olivet Boy’s Home in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. The home is in central Jamaica and looks after around 30 boys with an average age of 12. Most of the boys are from socially deprived areas and have little contact with parents or relatives. The boys attend primary and secondary school. Some boys have multiple reading and problem-solving difficulties and acquire skills at a slower rate that their age peers. The home is staffed by “house parents”, who have been positively assessed in various areas including child safety. Mount Olivet is self- sufficient in the production of eggs and chickens and sells surplus eggs to the community. A computer lab was introduced in 2004 with 11 computers. With every good wish Carol Finlay, World Mission Stamp Appeal.

The full letter is posted up on the notice board in the hall. Please have a look of it and keep the stamps coming in for this worthy cause.Anne Murray

LET THERE BE LIGHT!  As I am writing this letter "we" are all rather anxious, but very excited at the thought of how the church will look after our new lights are installed, for some time now some of us have had great difficulty in reading the music and  reading the words, especially around the pulpit area! It looks very likely we will be returning to the church for our service on Sunday 5th June. All this work, as you can imagine, is costing a lot of money, but the elders and deacons feel it is necessary to keep our church in good condition and fitting for the 21st century. We have had a number of coffee mornings to raise funds for the lighting fund, and we now ask for donations of money from the congregation.-----If you wish to contribute, please enclose cash or a cheque(made payable to Knox’s Church),in an envelope marked "LIGHTING FUND”, and place it in the plate, or give it to an Elder or Deacon. This will be greatly appreciated. Also in aid of this fund we are organising a concert in the Church on FRIDAY 3rd JUNE 7.30pm. Please do try to come along as we hope it to be a very friendly and enjoyable evening. The In-harmony choir, conductor Ruth Powrie, The Male-Voice choir, conductor, Sheena Glover, and a choir from Inverbrothock School are all performing. I hope it to be quite a shortish concert so that we may adjourn to the hall for tea/coffee and cake. Tickets---£5.00    children under 12--free available at Church  or at door on night.

Why Go To Church?

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday... "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 203,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the ministers are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all." This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, - much to the delight of the editor.

It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

Ecumenical service for the Year of the Light, (appropriately the Feast of Pentecost)

to be held at the Signal Tower Sunday 12th June at 4.30pm.

Social Events that are family friendly Roll up, roll up if you enjoy a good get together, Knox's & St. Vigeans believe that it would be a good idea for our churches to work together in providing social events that would cater for the families of our parish. These events would be for the WHOLE church family from the very young to the very old. This would allow the congregations from both churches to get to know each other better and to let new and returning members get to know more of the congregation. These events would also allow some members to be part of the church who are unable to come along on a Sunday morning. These would be informal events (like the Royal wedding Cafe) and do not need too much organisation. They will be fun events that will allow our churches to show Gods love in a practical way to all in our parish. Both churches will be used to host different events (dependant on suitability of venue for event) but it would be good if we had volunteers from both churches at each and every event working together to provide our congregations with the most enjoyable time.So far we have had The Royal Wedding Cafe & a BBQ. If you think you would like to help organise or help at an event speak to Lesley Balaj. If organising is not your thing support each event by coming along and getting to know more people from your church.

A Message from Brenda

As you will have already read in your News letter, Knox’s has had new lighting installed in the Church. We are trying very hard to raise money towards the cost. Alice Menmuir is organising a concert for June 3rd with 3 well-known local choirs.I am organising a concert to be followed by a Cheese& Wine on Saturday 6th

August at 7.30 in the Church. Tickets for the Concert only will be £7. For the Concert plus Cheese & Wine £11 each. Tickets can be had from your Elder or Deacon or by contacting myself on 01241 – 878724. tickets to the Cheese & Wine are limited. Those taking part in the Concert are :- James Hutchieson – Janet Williamson – Nick Hunter – Violet Thomson – Danny Lafferty – The Barrack Brothers – Colette Dear – Eileen Robb. Your support for both of these Concerts would be very much appreciated & also you will have a great nights entertainment.

* * * * * * * *David Jamieson, your Gift Aid Treasurer has retired and we thank him for many years of collecting the tax back on what you gift to the Church. I have taken over from David, so you may get a call from me at some point. I see from looking at David’s records that there are many members of the congregation who are working but don’t do Gift Aid. For every £1 you give we can claim back 22p. from the government. So please, any member who would consider doing Gift Aid please don’t hesitate to call me or see me at the Church. Many thanks

Brenda McLeod.

** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **Prayer is absolutely crucial in everything that we do, so it is wonderful to announce Knox’s prayer circle. If you have any concerns that you feel would benefit from prayer please tell Isobel Bell and she will pass the message on to the prayer circle and the issue or event will be prayed for. If any elder is made aware of situations within their district that require prayer

please let Isobel know. If you would like to join the prayer circle again speak to Isobel.
