These release notes describe the changes made in Preps 7.x software. Where applicable, the release notes refer you to additional documents for more information.
The Preps software is a prepress tool that you use to create press run layouts for bound-work impositions, ganged flat work, and step-and-repeat work. You can work on the fly in an interactive workspace, use stored templates for frequently repeated layouts, and print the production output to common file formats. It also supports varying degrees of workflow automation.
You can impose PDF input files or unpopulated job pages for sheetfed or web press-run layouts, and packaging label and flexible bag printers, and send the output to any PostScript-compatible device such as a computer-to-plate (CTP) device, imagesetter, on-demand printer, digital printer, wide-format imposition proofer, or laser printer.

Integration with the Prinergy Workflow software
Preps 7.5 is integrated and supported with Kodak Prinergy Workflow 7.5. Preps 7.5 is automatically installed with the Workshop/Workspace client software when you upgrade your Prinergy Workflow. Preps 7.5 is also supported with Prinergy Evo 6.1.3 or later.
Preps 7.1.3 is part of the Kodak Prinergy Workflow 7.0 software and is installed automatically with the Workshop update. Preps 7.1.4 is released as standalone software.
To confirm which version of Preps you have installed, select Help > About Preps 7 or .(Windows) Preps 7 > About Preps 7 (Macintosh)
Licenses for Preps 7.5
See .Licensing
Licenses for Preps 7.1.3 (integrated with Prinergy Workflow 7.0 software)Upgrades to Preps 7.1.3 from Preps 6.x or earlier are chargeable for customers who do not have a service contract that includes software upgrades. A Prinergy Workflow or Prinergy Evo license key containing a Preps 7.x license is required in order to upgrade. You must upgrade the Preps software together with your Kodak Prinergy Workflow software. In this case, Kodak Prinergy Workflow version 7.0 is required.
If you are using a floating license, you must upgrade the Preps software together with your Kodak Prinergy Workflow software. In this case, Kodak Prinergy Workflow version 7.0 is required to run Preps 7.1.3.
Licenses for Preps 7.1.4 (standalone software)Preps 7.1.4 requires a Preps 7.x license key and can be licensed as a standalone application in two ways, using:
The new software-based licensing
Prinergy's floating license manager (FLIM)
8
The software-based licensing in Preps 7.1.2 and 7.1.4 replaces the previously used dongle-based licensing. Follow the instructions in the section to replace Licensingyour dongle-based license with a software license or to activate your freshly-installed Preps 7.1.4 standalone software.
To convert a software-based Preps license to a Prinergy floating license, you must upgrade to the minimum version supported by Prinergy before converting the license. Floating licenses provide additional flexibility by allowing a seamless transfer of licenses between workstations.

Preps 7.5 new features and fixed bugs
New features and enhancements
Combine as SpreadPreps now offers users the ability to convert a series of pages selected from individual pages into one full length/height page (spread). Crop marks are automatically adjusted to accommodate the new page size and Fold marks are automatically added if gutters exist between the series of selected pages to indicate fold/spine width dimensions. See . (PREPS-12836)Press Runs workspace
Collation Mark FunctionalityA new Static Collation Mark Resource can be defined which is not restricted to the spine or fold area of low and high folio pages. Static Collation Marks can be placed anywhere on the Press Run, but the parameters cannot be saved as Smart Marks for reuse in new Templates and Jobs. See . (PREPS-Collation Mark settings14188)
Imposition Bounding Box BehaviorImposition Bounding Boxes for classic impositions will now reflect only the imposition from the bottom left page corner to the top right page corner for each Section. This new behavior makes it easier to manipulate multiple Sections on one Press Run. (PREPS-14107)
Expose the Print Dialog window on Save and Return to PrinergyWhen using Preps integrated with Prinergy, it is now possible to expose the Print dialog window by pressing Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows). When pressing these options, the menu function becomes the "Print" Save and Return to Prinergyfunction. (PREPS-14025)
Collation Mark PlacementSmart collation marks can now be placed on the front, back, or both sides of the sheet (Press Run). See . (PREPS-11625)Common settings for SmartMarks
10
Improved positioning of Collation Marks that were defined without a binding stylePreps 7.1.0 introduced a feature that allowed users to define collation mark placement without a binding style. When creating a new smart collation mark or editing an existing smart collation mark, you could select in the Binding list. None This allowed you to define collation marks based solely on the position with respect to the page, on all sides of page 1 in the press run.
In version 7.1.1 and earlier, the direction and position were incorrect. The new behavior in Preps 7.1.3 and later is correct. If you created any templates in Preps 7.1.1 or earlier that use these types of collation marks, you will need to update the templates. See . (PREPS-13850)Collation Mark settings

Using the Preps Template Migration Utility
What does the Preps Template Migration Utility (PTMU) do?
After you install the latest version of Preps, you may want to copy or move the templates, marks, and jobs from your older version of Preps to the new version.
PTMU migrates templates and marks within the Preps Resource folder. It converts static marks to SmartMarks and verifies the internal naming structure of the templates. It will also convert files, which is helpful if you reuse them .job
on a regular basis.
Where can I find the PTMU?
PTMU resides in the folder in the Preps Application folder.Utilities
Using PTMU in a standalone environment

FAQsWhat is the benefit of converting if I can convert on the fly when I am importing into Prinergy?
35
Converting on the fly is another option, but the import will be slowed down by the conversion process.
How do I know if the conversion was successful?
Check the log file. The template conversion messages will report successful outcomes.
Other than looking at the logfile, how can I tell if a template or job has been converted?
Open the .job file or the .tpl file in a text editor. You will see something like:
%%Creator: Preps 7.5.0 build number 347 Macintosh
If the Preps version says Preps 5.3, the file has not been converted through PTMU.
During a PTMU conversion I get a pop up window saying that the internal and external names of the template are different and do I want to convert?
They should be the same. By clicking , you will change the internal name to Yesthe external name.
What will PTMU do?
It will:
Convert static marks to internal SmartMarks.
Verify the internal naming structure to make sure that the external and internal file names are the same and log any discrepancies.
Check for missing mark files. For certain mark types, it will validate if there is a PDF equivalent for the EPS file defined. If not, it will log that discrepancy.
Place templates that cannot complete the migration process into a quarantined folder.
Generate a log file.
Can I convert .job files?
Yes. The .job files must be in the same Preps folder from which you are running the PTMU.
What is not converted?
The utility will not convert an EPS/PS file to a PDF file.
Can I still use Signature Select?
Yes
How can I tell if a mark in a template has been converted to a SmartMark?
When you open a converted template in Preps 7, the mark properties will show a SmartMark without a name. That is a key indicator that the template is from Preps 5 and has been converted through PTMU. If the mark is required to be used in any new work, you can use ‘save as’ on the converted mark in the template and save the mark to the marks folder as a resource that can be used in future.
36
I’ve converted my templates and marks following the recommended procedure. I’m seeing errors that weren’t there before, now what?
Record the errors. Get screen captures if possible. Open a support call. The support team may ask you to collect a job, plus the template and marks used for that job, to help resolve the issue.
Will all marks work like they did before?
If you come across an issue where you are getting unexpected results, check for published articles that may offer more information. If you don’t Partner Place
find information, open a support call.
