Over the past two weeks we have worked on our behaviour policy and individual education plans, we have been involved in swimming trials and started our system based OLNA testing. Our swimming carnival was yesterday and the sportsmanship and leadership our students displayed was awesome. Congratulations to all students for their efforts and especially to those who came away from the day as championship winners. Aquila was the winning faction and to everyone in Aquila I congratulate you. To the students in other factions, there is always next year! Thanks to Ms Naisbitt and her band of helpers, whose efforts meant it was a great day that was enjoyed by all. As a school, we have had a discussion this week about lockers and have resolved to stop using them for now. We will review this decision in Term 4, but have found that the use of them by students meant many were late to class, many left items in their lockers and missed valuable instructional time going back to their locker from the classroom, and interactions in that area during changeover were not always positive. As we are a relatively small school, our students can easily leave what they need for each lesson in their designated rooms, thus negating the need to store equipment and books elsewhere and carry heavy bags. Students will take their bags to class each period and this will also mean if they need something from their bag, it is right there and no time is wasted in retrieving it. Two staff at the school have secured Curriculum Team Leader positions within the school, Mrs Susan Marsh won the Literacy position and Mrs Trina Hill, the Numeracy role. Thank you to Susan and Trina for applying for these roles. The Executive team look forward to working closely with you and your teams to analyse data and plan for improved student outcomes in these areas. I am sure other staff will join these teams and contribute their valuable insights for the benefit of our students. At Kojonup DHS, we are very fortunate to have School Council members who are dedicated to our school and making it a great place to be. Council has decided to meet twice per term and our next meeting will be on the 24 th March. At this meeting we will be looking at the Director General’s Statement of Expectations for Principals and signing off on this document. We will also look at some updated school policies. If you have anything that you would like taken to the School Council, please approach one of the Council members and speak to them, we value every school community member’s opinion and input and this is an integral part of each Council member’s role. In closing, we would like to extend our condolences to the Cox family on the passing of Jack a man who will be fondly remembered by our school community. DEPUTY PRINCIPAL NEWS ATTENDANCE

Did you know?

Missing half a day of school each week = missing one month of learning a year.

Missing a day of school on average a week between Kindergarten and Year 12 = missing nearly 2 and ½ years of school.

Whilst enrolment in Kindergarten is not compulsory, once enrolled, attending is compulsory.

We know however that some children may need extra encouragement to go to school

regularly.

Some common problems you may have getting your child to school:

They won’t get out of bed in the morning.

They go to bed late at night.

They can’t find their uniform, books or school bag.

They are slow to eat breakfast.

They haven’t done their homework or are avoiding a test or assignment.

They are watching television, playing video games or on social media late at night or before school.

You may also be worried that your child:

may not have friends or is not fitting in.

may be feeling lost at school

fears getting into trouble or failing

may have learning difficulties

may not be getting along with a teacher or other students.

How can we work together to support your child to attend school regularly?

Parents and Carers

Have a set time for your child to go to bed at night and get up in the morning.

Have their uniform and school bag ready the night before.

Have a set time for breakfast and daily homework activities.

Have a set time for television or access to the internet / social media and games.

Talk about school positively.

If running late, encourage your child to still go to school and reassure them that you will let the school know.

Organise for your child to meet a friend before school so they can arrive at school together.

Speak to your child’s teacher or one of our deputies, Mrs Fleay (Secondary) or Mrs Stephens (K to Year 6).

Teachers and Deputies

Provide predictable routines to reduce anxiety about going to school.

Provide learning activities that are responsive to your child’s needs and developmental level.

Work with parents / carers to address any issues or barriers to attendance.

Talk to you about possible support from our Chaplain, School Psychologist or other agencies.

Provide a positive and supportive learning environment through our Positive Behaviour Support program.

Monitor attendance and make contact with parents / carers if their child is at risk due to low attendance to see what

support we can offer.

Implement health and wellbeing programs that support the social and emotional development of our students.

If we can assist you to improve attendance for your child or children, please feel free to ring or pop in and see us. Heather Stephens
