8nited States Army engineers fought at Milne /ay and maintained communications and supply at Port Moresby.
American anti5aircraft units also served at Port Moresby& Milne /ay and /una.
he Japanese9ike the Australians until late '()1& $mperial 0apanese Army units tended to
be recruited by region... 6uring the 3okoda phase of the Papuan campaign
the majority of the 0apanese fighting troops were from the island of Shikoku or
from the :iroshima area. 9ater these were reinforced by troops mainly from
2saka. %he $mperial 0apanese Navy escorted shipping to Papua and was
engaged in coastal operations. %wo thousand of the Navy;s marines served at/una and Milne /ay. %he $0N <$mperial 0apanese Navy= also provided almost
all of the aircraft supporting land operations from bases at 9ae& Gasmata and
-abaul. Perhaps 1'** of the 0apanese force in Papua were not from 0apan.
%hese men& primarily engaged in carrying ammunition and food& were from
3orea& "hina and %aiwan.

o! do youfeel a&out
the enemy-
As we have discussed %he battle of 3okoda was not an isolated battle but was a part of a series of skirmishes that lasted over a period of months from August '()1 > 0anuary '()+ in Papua New Guinea. As we have seen above& America became involved in the effort to force to 0apanese out of Papua NewGuinea after the /attle of 3okoda. "omplete task 1 to figure out where the fighting happened and thetactics that were involved.
2ne of the reasons why 3okoda was so important was because it was the first time in 7orld 7ar $$ in thePacific %heatre that 0apanese land forces were stopped. $t was also important because if they took PortMoresby they could use Papua New Guinea as a landing base to invade Australia <if they wanted to > it isdisputed as to whether or not 0apan was going to invade Australia or not=.
2ver ?@&*** Australians served in the Papuan campaign in the army& air force& navy or auiliary services. Some were never to return home& others would bring back memories that would be scarred for life or return home wounded with physical disability.

2ne of the reasons why 3okoda was so important was because it was the first time in 7orld 7ar $$ in thePacific %heatre that 0apanese land forces were stopped. $t was also important because if they took PortMoresby they could use Papua New Guinea as a landing base to invade Australia <if they wanted to > it is
disputed as to whether or not 0apan was going to invade Australia or not=.
%he military strategy of 0apan from 6ecember '()' to mid5'()1 was an aggressive oneB %o advance to
occupy locations of strategic importance& either resource rich areas& or places that would allow them to
better defend their gains. %he Allied strategy in the same period was defensive& simply to prevent the
0apanese achieving their strategic goals.
%he 0apanese had attacked to obtain the rubber of Malaya& the oil of /orneo and the 4uinine of 0ava& but
there was no particular resource in Papua that they desired. -ather Papua was one of those places which
would form a useful link in the chain of defences of the newly con4uered area. Aware the Allies had built up
their strength in Australia and assuming this would be directed northwards towards the major 0apanese
naval base of -abaul& the 0apanese re4uired a screen of air bases forward of -abaul to protect it. %he
Allies wanted these same air bases in Papua to support their attack on -abaul. Port Moresby& Milne /ay&
3okoda and /una were the airfields or potential airfield sites in 4uestion. %hese four locations were of
continuing strategic interest for both sides and so became the focus of most of the land& sea and air
fighting in the Papuan campaign.
