Congregation Anshai Torah Sivan-Tammuz-Av 5780 June / July 2020 Volume 40 / Issue 6 & 7 Kol Emet This year has been a whirlwind. No one really knows what to truly expect as President, but after two years I can honestly say that this is the most meaningful and special board experience of my life. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your President. First, I want to thank Rabbi Weinberg and Rabbi Kush- nick for your wonderful leadership, guidance, and friend- ship throughout these past two years. I also want to thank our amazing and dedicated staff led by Harvey, Rachel, Kay, Wanda, Carol, Debbie, Daniel, Nancy, Don, and their entire teams, insuring that Anshai runs smoothly on a daily basis. Again, Thank You. It has been an honor to work with you. I will always cherish the special bonds that I have created with each of you over the past two years. Additionally, I want to give a special thank you to all the past presidents for the assistance you provided me when- ever I needed to call on you. Your experience is invalua- ble and greatly appreciated. I could not have asked for a better Board of Directors and Executive Committee. I have been blessed to be able to work closely with Dan, Jay, Haim, Marcy, Andrew, War- ren, Cheryl, and Jen on the Executive Committee. Mar- cy, thank you for your guidance over the past two years, and Cheryl and Marcy, thank you for your dedication to Anshai; we will miss both of you on the Executive Com- mittee next year. Our full Board has been absolutely amazing, and enthusiastically stepped up to the plate whenever needed. They along with the many committee chairs, staff, Rabbis and volunteers have become the Anshai Torah Doers. (One Last Time) Remember DO OR DO NOT; THERE IS NO TRY. Thank you for all that each and every one of you does for our congregation. Our Financial Stability Committee continues to provide us with information and recommendations on important top- ics like the size of our current physical structure, growth, fundraising, endowment and investment programs. We officially created a separate endowment committee out of the Financial Stability Committee to assist us with our financial future. Our Early Childhood Director, Rachel Blum, continues to lead our Preschool in providing a top-notch educational environment for our youngest members. Rachel, it has been a absolute pleasure to work with you over the past two years. We have been very busy over the past year. Our auxilia- ries continue to provide our members with a variety of remarkable programming throughout the year. We began this working calendar year with the great Weinberg Family Golf Tournament, where we had 120 participants and raised thousands of dollars to assist our Anshai children with summer camp scholarships. Diamonds & Dice was a huge success, and we were priv- ileged to be able to honor Pam and Matt Kurtzman for their dedication to Anshai over the years, while having a whole lot of fun. Our Arnie Sweet Scholar-In-Residence program contin- ues to be a yearly pillar of our congregation. We had the honor of welcoming Rabbi Brad Hirschfield as our Arnie Sweet Scholar in Residence this year. We could not have asked for a better Scholar in Residence. Other highlights from the past year include our High Holi- day and Shabbat Services, our deliveries of Shalach Manot baskets; several Israel Advocacy programs (including hosting Sarah Tuttle-Singer); education; Artist in Residence program (where we hosted Joey Weisen- berg); Sunshine committee initiatives; social media, tech- nology and communication implementations and improve- ments; Flower Sales, CAT’s in College programs, Sukkot- Hanukkah-and-Purim Programs; and Tikkun Olam com- mittee programs. We continue the success with our twice-daily minyanim to ensure that all who need to say kaddish for a loved one can do so. Also, our Hesed Committee continues to be an unsung positive for our congregation, doing the little things for our members (like visiting those who are ill, in- cluding during these past two months). 2020 Anshai Torah Annual Meeting – President’s Report . . . President’s Perspective . . .

I want to personally thank each of you who volunteered your time to fundraise for each event this year. It is not easy to ask people and companies to donate their money, but it is a necessary task and cannot be overlooked. Our membership has been steady over the past year; I am happy to report that we have more members than we did last year (over 550 families). I hope we continue to grow our membership moving forward. Membership (in-reach and outreach) is vital and is of utmost importance. We have improved our membership cabinet this past year, and I commissioned new committees that will have the sole focus of membership retention and new mem-bers so we can engage our members in targeted ways, with specific experiences and opportunities for all congre-gants. Our membership cabinet is hard at work to contin-ue to make our shul a success. In addition, our Chai Membership Program has never been stronger with many new families joining to ensure that all who wish to become part of our family, regardless of financial ability, can do so. We must maintain our sense of intimacy and personal in-reach even as we grow. Rabbi Kushnick has provided continued consistency with our Religious School. The search committee has been working extremely hard to find our next Education Direc-tor over the past year. We started our search with many highly qualified candidates, but we have not found the right fit just yet. We will continue to look for our next di-rector as we move forward. Our Religious School Com-mittee, with an active group of parents, has assisted in connecting the classrooms, calendars, and staff with our Religious School families in a positive and productive way. The joint Hebrew High Program with the two other conservative synagogues had another positive year. Our children continue to receive only the very best Jewish education and experiences from Preschool through high school and are fully prepared for their own Jewish Jour-ney thereafter. Sadly, we have seen an increase in anti-Semitic threats, including our own incident last summer. Even though that incident was found not to be a true threat against our shul, we were proactive with the safety implementations and actions for our children, families, and staff. Our con-gregation continues to work on making our community a safer place. We have always been proactive with our security initiatives; and this year, we again made some additional enhancements to our security. The Board of Directors adopted the proposed security recommenda-tions made by the Security Committee, including "if you

see something, say something." The safety for our chil-dren, congregants, staff, Rabbis, and our synagogue’s physical structure will always be of the utmost im-portance. We have worked tirelessly to keep our financials stable while being fiscally responsible. With that said, COVID-19 changed our financial picture for the remainder of the year, but we were able to obtain an SBA PPP loan that assisted our yearly financial outlook. We currently have a positive cash flow and will continue to keep a close eye on this coming year’s budget numbers to make sure that we are financially successful over the coming year. I want to thank Rabbi Weinberg, Rabbi Kushnick, Harvey, the staff, Dan, Executive Committee, the Board, our COVID-19 Task Force, and TF Sub-Committee for all you have done in order for Anshai to continue on as smoothly as possible during this dynamic time. These are trying times, and to have such a collaborative effort to assist in making these difficult decisions is greatly appreciated. First, we needed to go virtual, which we did immediately (from meetings, school, education, to services). We are having magnificent attendance at our daily minyanim, Kabbalat Shabbat & Havdalah Services. Your commit-ment to be active in our virtual world shows how positive our future will continue to be. Then, I put together, with the assistance of our Rabbis, Harvey, and Dan, a COVID-19 Task Force to assist with navigating through vital decisions that needed to be made. The task force was made up of past presidents, business and financial experts, current BODs and non-profit experts (all in conjunction with the guidance of Dr. Jeffrey Kahn and Steven Davidoff). The Task Force worked diligently to make certain we as-sisted Rachel and our Preschool/Summer Camp with op-tions and opportunities to make our PreK families com-fortable for the remainder of this year and into next year. We made sure our financials and cash flow were protect-ed by applying for the PPP SBA Loan, which we have already received (A very special thank you to Pam Kurtz-man, Rusty Cooper, Jonathan Goodman, Jay Post and Harvey for your assistance with obtaining the PPP Loan). We revised our budget for next year, which was viewed at the meeting, to account for the possible difficulties that we may face in light of COVID-19. Additionally, we have con-tinued to pay all of our Rabbis and staff.

Anshai Torah Families

A note from the Hesed Committee —

We all know the remarkable acts of humanity seen all over the world during this Covid-19 crisis and I have seen my own little miracles from the many volunteers who called to help Hesed. Hesed committee volunteers made over 150 phone calls to the more senior members of our congregation to offer help or simply to check in. We shopped and delivered groceries, ordered, cooked and delivered meals. We also delivered fresh baked challah from the kitchen of Sharon Horn. I am overwhelmed with the generosity and support of all those who, despite the difficulties, help make sure our congregants are well supported. Volunteers from both our congrega-tion and from our greater Dallas community did not hesitate to step forward.

In addition to meals, a group of young adult volunteers took it upon themselves to provide a family with an order from Amazon: diapers, wipes, toilet paper, water, children’s books, toys and snacks, laundry detergent, and gift cards. A congregant wrote: “I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all you and the volunteers have done for us. There really are no words to express my sincere gratitude. My heart is filled with gratitude”. Another wrote: “Thank you so very much for offering to help get us kosher meat. We are so very grateful. We are now stocked with food so we can continue staying inside our home”. Gerri Romanik said “Your volunteer is an absolute angel. Talking to her filled me with joy; she simply made my day and week that much better. My heart is full. Thank you so very much for bringing her into my life”. So from the bottom of my heart I thank my volunteers: Ilene Baumel, David Berman, Ora Bernstein, Ilene Bierman, Sheryl Billman, Kristen Binkley, Jenna Braoude, Cynthia Brooks, Kerri Chambers, Karen Cohen, Liz Cooper, Stephen Fleischman, Jessica Gordon, Alex Horn, Sharon Horn, Arielle Iola, Marcy Kahn, Lynne Kirshenbaum, Tanya McDaniel, Janis Peiser, Denise Pollis, Jessica Ringenberg, Katty Rosenstock, Sherry Rubin, Genna Skolnik, David Stanley, Sheri Vine, Ivette Wilderman, Lisa Wile, Carolyn Wilkov and Natalie Wills. And to all those who contacted me, I will call on you as the need arises. Your kindness is immeasurable; it has warmed my heart and soul. I wish everyone blessings for good health. Elaine Levitt Hesed Committee Chair

Even our young volunteers helped their mom pack meals and made greeting cards.

Gerri Romanik enjoys the greeting cards and meals provided to her.

Bar Mitzvah . . . Called to the Torah

Page 6

Kol Emet

David Matthew Gershenson will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Shabbat morning, June 6, 2020. Da-vid is the son of Laura and Eli Gershenson, and younger brother to Hannah. He is the grandson of Neil z”l and Bari Millman of Dallas, TX, and Alyson and Elliot Gershenson of Houston, TX. David is entering the eighth grade at the St. Marks School of Texas, where he is an exceptional student and is very involved in school sports. David ran cross-country and was part of the undefeated 7

th grade soccer and baseball

teams. He enjoys playing baseball and soccer out of school as well. David plays baseball with the Rays (Young Guns), and plays on DKSC, a select soccer team in the DFW area. His other interests include video games, hanging out with friends and traveling. For his Mitzvah project, David participated in ACEING AUTISM where he helped teach kids with autism how to play tennis. We would like to thank Warren Rubin, David’s tutor, for helping David prepare for his Bar Mitzvah. He was sup-portive and encouraging of David throughout the process and we are truly appreciative of his time and dedication. Thank you to Rabbi Weinberg and Rabbi Kushnick for their guidance and support throughout David’s years at Anshai Torah. We could not be more proud of David and his accomplish-ments. We look forward to celebrating this Simcha with our family and friends from near and far and the Anshai Torah community in June and again in October.

Jonathan Buck Grossfeld, son of Ashley and Marc Grossfeld, was called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Thursday, May 21, 2020. The beautiful and mean-ingful service was conducted, with our immediate fami-ly present, at Levine Academy in the Wende Weinberg outdoor prayer garden, with Rabbi Weinberg officiat-ing. Rabbi Litton of Levine Academy was also in at-tendance, acting as Gabbai during the Torah service. The service was also livestreamed on Facebook, and was used as the Levine Academy morning service for that day. Over 2000 views have been recorded to date of his service video on Facebook. Jonathan worked so hard to learn his Haftarah and Torah portions, and he was thrilled to have the oppor-tunity to have his service at this time rather than re-scheduling. We would like to thank Rabbi Weinberg for making our day so special. Jonathan’s parsha lays out a framework for the Jews to set up and take apart the tabernacle as they traveled through the desert. Unfor-tunately, the Torah did not provide guidance for hold-ing a Bar Mitzvah during a pandemic, and we are ex-tremely grateful for the flexibility and creativity to help create this special service for Jonathan. Also, thank you so much to Adina Weinberg for pre-paring Jonathan for his Bar Mitzvah. To say that Jona-than was overwhelmed and anxious when he began would be an understatement. Adina’s calm demeanor and always smiling personality helped put Jonathan at ease to allow him to prepare for his special day. Even when we pivoted to a weekday Shacharit service, her encouragement eased the transition. Jonathan just completed his 7

th grade year at Levine

Academy, where he enjoys being a member of the basketball team and is also a member of the Student Congress and NJHS. A heartfelt thank you to Levine Academy, especially to Rabbi Litton, for opening your doors to us — not just for this event, but welcoming our family for the past 14 years. It is even more mean-ingful that we held our service in the Wende Weinberg Prayer Garden with Rabbi Weinberg. Wende was so influential in our family’s Jewish journey that we cannot think of a better place to celebrate this special occa-sion.

The following students were not properly identified as Seniors in last month’s Kol Emet. We sincerely regret this error. Ethan Grandfield is graduating from Reedy High School in Frisco, TX. He will attend the Uni-versity of Oklahoma in the fall. Ethan is the son of Sherri and David Grandfield. Madeline Schafer, daughter of Dee Anna and Greg Schafer, will graduate from Wakeland High School in Frisco. In the fall, she plans to attend the University of Florida, majoring in biology. Leah Ariel Stoller is graduating from Plano West, where she has been very active in BBYO and National Honor Soci-ety. In the fall, Leah will attend Arizona State University to study Finance. She is the daughter of Steve Stoller and Sophia Stoller, and oldest sister of Talia, Sasha and Tessa. Walker Wood, son of Beth and Don Wood, graduated Willow Bend Academy in November 2019. He currently at-tends cosmetology school, preparing for a career as a stylist, colorist and make-up artist.

Our CATs in College committee continues to connect our students to Anshai Torah while they are in col- lege, graduate school, or active military. Needless to say, that looks very different today than during typical times. We aim to support our kids as their lives are turned a little bit upside down during the Covid-19 pan-demic. We were able to honor our high school grads (our new CATs in College kids) at the end of May with a gift bag including a special book from Rabbi Weinberg and Rabbi Kushnick. Congratulations to our college grads, Sarah Balis (Arizona State), Yael Cohen (University of North Texas), Shelby Evans (UT Austin), Zachary Kolodny (UT Dallas), Rachael Knubowitz (University of Arkansas), Ilana Kovach (UT Arlington), Dani Milner (Bentley University), Sydney Shusterman (University of Kansas),

Erin Sporkin (Indiana University, and Michael Zetune (UT Austin). We are pleased to offer these great projects to all children of Anshai Torah families at no charge. To be included, please remember to let us know about your child in college (or if they’re graduating) and send us their updated contact information to [email protected].

A special thank you to our CATs in College 2019-20 donors! Please consider making a contribution to the CATs in College/Military fund so we can continue to connect with our students with fun packages, gift cards, and more. To make a contribution, log into shulcloud, and under the "donations and payments" tab, select "CATs in College" from the dropdown menu. Also, continue to send photos of your student enjoying Jewish life on campus and their special gifts from CATs in College. Thank you to ALL of the volunteers who have helped make this happen! Yes, we have had to reschedule or cancel some program-ming and Mitzvah Events. We are working with all of the upcoming B’nai Mitzvah families for options as we navi-gate through this pandemic. We had our first Zoom meet-ing with the August and September Mitzvah families this past week, and plan to do so with the next set of families in the very near future. Our goal is to host every scheduled Shabbat B’nai Mitz-vah, beginning in August, although our service may look a little different. As we began to focus on our future during the pandemic, we realized that we needed to shift our attention to how and when we would re-open. Ensuring everyone’s safety to the best of our ability, with social distancing and vari-ous procedures would define our immediate future. I commissioned a Reopening Sub-committee to the Covid-19 Task Force with the mission of working on recom-mended protocols and procedures of our future reopening of the shul (what needs to happen to reopen and what we need to have in place when we reopen). The sub-committee is looking at all aspects of the current state of the virus, safety, guidelines, cleaning, shul life, preschool/summer camp, Minyanim, and services. I want you to know that we all have worries and concerns when it comes to opening up our doors again to the Pre-school and for you to attend services, but we will get through this together. The sub-committee’s recommendations on protocols and procedures will provide us with the guidelines for reopen-ing. Important safety protocols will be put in place, the number of members present at the shul will need to be set, no food service at this time, masks will be worn, and social distancing will be maintained. Strict procedures related to use of the Torah will be introduced, as well as changes to our participation during religious services.

We will continue to utilize the best medical advice availa-ble to determine how and when we should move forward with the re-opening of the shul. We are going to do all that is in our capacity to ensure the safety and protection of our children, congregants, Rabbis and staff. The process of opening the building in the very near fu-ture will be staged and gradual. Our procedures for opening the shul will be continually reviewed, subject to the medical advice we receive and government directives. We are in the middle of a dynamic situation, and we are prepared to tighten our social distancing restrictions and protocols as necessary. We will continue to utilize various technologies to address the set of conditions defined by COVID-19, including Zoom platform and a new Livestream platform for Shab-bat services beginning next month. This will allow all members to be able to attend services either virtual or in person. Our plan is to get back to normal (our new nor-mal) as soon as possible. Dan, I will make every effort to continue to make your transition to being our next President as smooth as possi-ble. I am confident you will do a wonderful job and con-tinue the wonderful success that we have experienced at Anshai over the past 21 years. I want to thank all of you, my kids Bailey and Sawyer, and especially Jana. Jana, through the many meetings and late nights, you have been by my side. I could not have done this important task without your support and pa-tience. I look forward to a little more free time with you and the kids after June 30. I am grateful and honored for you choosing me to serve as your President the past two years and I now look for-ward to joining the fraternity of our Past Presidents. Thank you and Shalom,
