    PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE / FOUNDATION

Welcome to all of our new members that I have a met over the last several months; especially all of those cute little babies that keep getting added to our congregation. It is great to see how our congregation is growing with so many young families. However, we keep being reminded of the circle of life, as we have sadly lost several congregants, including some of our longest tenured members recently. Our Temple family would not be what it is today without the dedication

and foundational contributions that have been made by so many of these individuals. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families. This should serve as a reminder to all of us that everything that is done to support and grow our Temple is not just for us now, but for our children, grandchildren, and future generations of Temple families.

I wanted to update you on some things we are doing to continue to make our congregation a thriving and welcoming community for all. Under the leadership of Deborah Fabricant and her Bylaws Committee, we have updated the Temple Israel bylaws. You should have all received an email with a link to these updates to review. Should anyone have questions, please join us on Tuesday, May 16th at 7:30 PM for a Town Hall Meeting to specifically discuss the changes. The congregation will vote to accept these changes at our Annual Meeting, this year being held on Sunday, June 25, 2017. Please make sure you attend to hear the latest updates and to provide your vote. There will not be an open discussion for the bylaw changes at the annual meeting, so if you have questions they need to be addressed at the Town Hall gathering on May 16th.

As many of you know, we have been holding our Annual Gala celebration at Temple Israel since returning from the remodel. We are very excited to announce this year’s celebration, “License to Kvell,” our take on a James Bond evening. During this evening, we will recognize and honor the leadership and dedication to our community of Mark Beizer & Cathe Hagerman-Beizer and Paddy Kaller (a member of Temple Israel for 70 years!). This will be held at the Temple on Saturday, June 3rd. This is our largest fundraiser of the year, and we encourage everyone's attendance or participation in our fundaising efforts (more information on page 11).

This time of year also reminds me of the expression, “April showers bring May flowers.” Well, this winter we finally had our share of rain, which has given us some incredible blooming flowers and trees this spring. So my advice to all of you, please slow down and appreciate all of the flowers, trees and beauty that is all around us. I guarantee you will not regret it!

So for this month’s chuckles, I will leave you with a couple of quickies. First, 'A dyslexic man walks into a bra...' and finally 'I went to the zoo the other day, there was only one dog in it, it was a shitzu.' Have a wonderful month!

Financial skills are not a requirement. We need individuals for marketing, donor outreach, record keeping, correspondence.

Nominees must have 5 years of membership at the Temple and be in good financial standing. Meeting times are being reevaluated. For more information about this exciting opportunity please contact Don Fike, Foundation President at [email protected]

Shavuot is known by several names: Chag Hashavuot (the Festival of Weeks), Chag Habikkurim (the Feast of the First Fruits), and Chag Hakatzir (the Festival of Reaping). Ashkenazi Jews may pronounce and write the name of the holiday as Shavuos.

Shavuot (lit. weeks) is known as the Festival of the Giving of the Torah at the foot of Mount Sinai. It was recorded in the Torah that after 7

weeks (or 49 days) of wandering in the desert from the time of the escape from Egypt, the Children of Israel proceeded to Mount Sinai in the desert. Moses ascended the mountain to meet God, who gave him the Ten Commandments, which were written on two tablets to be delivered to the Children of Israel.

The Torah commands: "And you shall proclaim that day (the 50th day) to be a holy convocation!" (Leviticus 23:21). The name Shavuot, "Weeks," symbolizes the completion of this seven-week journey. Everyone present at Mt. Sinai promised to follow these rules and to teach them to their children and their children’s children, and so on and so on. We still teach these rules today!

Shavuot is also a harvest holiday. In the time of the Temple, the ancient Israelites brought their first fruits to the Temple to offer to God at Shavuot. Along with Sukkot and Passover, it is one of the Shalosh Regalim (Three Pilgrimage Festivals), during which people gathered in Jerusalem with their agricultural offerings.

In modern times, Jews can no longer bring the first fruits of their harvest to the Temple in Jerusalem, and thus there are no particular mitzvot, or commandments, associated with Shavuot. There are, however, several rituals that are traditional components of celebrating the holiday.

It is customary to decorate ones home with greens and fresh flowers on Shavuot as a reminder of the spring harvest and the ancient ritual of bringing the first fruits to the Temple.

The custom of eating dairy products - cheese, cheesecakes, blintzes and other dairy products are customarily served and eaten during Shavuot as the wandering ends in the land flowing with milk and honey.

Many people stay up all night studying Torah. This custom evolved from the story that says that when the Israelites were at Sinai, they overslept and had to be awakened by Moses. As a result, many modern Jews stay up all night to study and celebrate receiving the Torah. These events, known as Tikkun Leil Shavuot, which literally means “Rectification for Shavuot Night,” are understood as the custom of studying with a community in order to re-experience standing at Mount Sinai,

where the Jewish people received the Torah. The Tikkun Leil Shavuot was developed by 16th century mystics in Safed, who believed that by studying on Shavuot, they were symbolically preparing Israel to enter into a sacred relationship with God. Modern interpretations and versions of this practice include study on a wide range of topics.

Traditionally, the Book of Ruth, part of the section of the Bible known as Writings, is read during services on Shavuot. Ruth is a young Moabite woman who married an Israelite man. When her husband died, she followed her Jewish mother-in-law, Naomi, back to Israel and adopted the Jewish faith and people as her own. To feed herself and Naomi, she gleaned in the field of Boaz, a rich man. Boaz is taken with her, and eventually they marry. King David descended from Ruth.

On May 31st at 10:30 a.m. Temple Israel will conduct a Shavuot & Yizkor Service. As usual, all are welcome to celebrate this wonderful holiday!

TIKKUN LEIL SHAVUOTTuesday, May 30 at 6:45 p.m.

Facilitators: Rabbi Moskowitz, Sharon Amster Brown, and other teachers

Revelation at Mount Sinai was a shattering experience for the Israelites. It cracked open reality as they had come to accept it and disclosed a dimension of profound beauty and power, which they were invited to embrace. To ritualize this moment of creative disorientation the 16th century Kabbalists of Safed created an evening of all-night study (Tikkun Leil Shavuot), which concluded at the break of dawn with a service welcoming the festive moment of Shavuot. Tikkun Leil Shavuot celebrates a moment of truth and wonder which remains eternally alluring.

Join us, as we embrace this tradition of study, celebration and wonder. Cost: none

    FOCUS ON NEW MEMBERS!

    GLORIA ROTH

“It’s good to be back at Temple Israel and in Long Beach at this different phase of my life.” Gloria Roth, married by Rabbi Wolli Kaelter at Temple Israel, recently moved back to Long Beach after many years away, and immediately became immersed in a wide variety of activities at the Temple.

Gloria grew up in Reform Judaism and belonged to a few different synagogues when she lived in Orange County. She is now divorced and with no immediate

family in the area, Gloria is eager to become an active part of Temple Israel’s family and community, and to make new friends. She has a keen interest in life-long learning, especially Jewish heritage and history. She has experience working with adult education and looks forward to helping with our JJL Committee, as well as attending classes and programs. As a retired teacher and school counselor, Gloria loves volunteering with children, helping with art projects and reading. She hopes to do more of this at Temple Israel as she has at other synagogues.

Since joining, Gloria has dove into temple life. She attends the Rabbi's weekly Torah Study class and has a particular interest in Kabbalah. She has already signed up to be a volunteer in our library, enjoys helping in the kitchen and is interested in volunteering with our Torah Center and serving on our JJL Committee, as these are areas of experience for her.

Gloria is the proud “parent” of her two cats, Joey and Jack Benny, and her horse. In addition to loving animals, Gloria keeps active and has become an avid bicyclist. She recently rode round trip from Ventura to Ojai, about 30 miles! Gloria enjoys aerobics, watercolor painting, gardening and knitting. She is a big fan of “Indy movies,” the Long Beach Symphony, MOLA and the Long Beach Museum of Art. Gloria is committed to social justice and grassroots efforts to protect the environment, and both human and animal rights. She hopes to connect with others at Temple Israel who share her passions and interests.

    EXPERIENCE ISRAEL NEWSby Bonnie Bachenheimer

As with other holidays, Passover is much different in Israel than it is in Southern California. Two weeks before the first night everything changes. Political arguments about the government cease and discussions turn to why one can or cannot eat kitniyot. No one has time for extracurricular activities because they are preparing for Passover; cleaning the closets, cupboards, house and car; arranging for guests; kashering the

    kitchen; cooking and baking.

Grocery stores shut down a couple of hours before the start of Passover. Henceforth, throughout the holiday, they either take all of the non-pesadick food off the shelves or they restrict access with barricades and covers. While some restaurants kasher their kitchens, and a few bakeries make delicious potato bread and semi-delicious pesadick pastries, many eating establishments are closed.

The Seder I attended is like none I’ve been to before – except last year. My daughter’s husband’s father is from Yemen, so they follow the Yemenite traditions. The entire table (plates, food, glasses) was covered before the meal; matzot were soft (wetted); the Hebrew prayers sounded different; we had Yemenite soup for our main dish. There was not a gefilte fish or chopped liver in site. [Last year I asked if I could bring food to the Seder. “Sure” they responded. “What do you want to bring?” “How about tsimmis or kugel?” I answered. I was met with blank stares. What IS that?] Our family consisted of nine adults and twelve young children – four still in diapers.

The first day of Passover is dedicated to bar-b-que. I doubt there is one Israeli who is not eating salads, meats and vegetables from the grill. We had chicken wings, hot dogs, lamb kebab, “chorizo,” and steak. Everyone (including the children) ate artichokes (without butter).

The interim days (Chol HaMo’ed Pesach) are for enjoyment. All schools, public agencies and many offices are closed. National parks, zoos, campgrounds, amusement parks, museums, recreation areas, swimming pools, movie theaters, shopping malls, water parks, tourist villages, aquariums, festivals, farms and everything for entertainment adopt an extended schedule to accommodate the millions of families seeking holiday fun. [There is only one Seder meal in Israel. The holiday lasts seven days.]

Passover in Israel is enjoyable and painless. Everyone in the country is doing basically the same things that I am. The best part is that I do not need to explain to anyone the reason I’m taking a day off work to prepare for a dinner, or why I can drink wine but I cannot drink beer.

    EXPERIENCE ISRAEL / SCIC

Shelves in the macholet (convenience store)

Reflecting on our people’s long journey from slavery to freedom, made even clearer and more tangible after having relived the hagaddah story this past Pesach, I hope we will be inspired to greater activism by serving those who are less fortunate than ourselves; those who, like our forebears, yearned for a better future both for themselves and for their children.

Ours is a very long history of our ancestors’ courage in facing oppression which, hopefully, move us to greater support for our diverse counterparts around the world who are still fighting for freedom … every single day … especially as voices of hatred and intolerance are rising, both at home and abroad.

Together, we can honor our shared values by putting our compassion into action.

Some of the ways we Jews can stand up proudly for those who are oppressed and vulnerable in the world are by magnifying the voices of those silenced by bigotry and violence … upholding the dignity and rights of all by fighting for civil and political rights, combatting the effects of climate change, ending violence against women and girls, and aiding communities after disasters and conflicts.

Let us join with Temple Israel’s own Social Action Committee, Yad b’ Yad, the Caring Community and other temple groups, as well as with the South Coast Interfaith Council (SCIC), California Conference For Equality And Justice (CCEJ), Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUW) and the many additional community groups working for peace, justice and equity. Let us follow in the footsteps of our ancestors and live the values we so cherish.

An extraordinary self-portrait, in which Kertész interrogates himself about the course of his own remarkable life, moving from memories of his childhood in Budapest, his imprisonment in Nazi death camps and the forged record that saved his life, his experiences as a censored journalist in postwar Hungary under successive totalitarian communist regimes, and his eventual turn to fiction,

culminating in the novels—such as Fatelessness, Fiasco, and Kaddish for an Unborn Child—that have established him as one of the most powerful, unsentimental, and imaginatively daring writers of our time.

DISRUPTIVE THINKING: A STUDY OF FIVE JEWISH ARTISTS

Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. May 4, 11, and date TBD

    Teacher: Rabbi Moskowitz

The thrust of Jewish wisdom has been to disrupt conventional thinking in order to help us think of the ordinary in extraordinary ways. We will look at five Jewish artists, each of whom was part of a distinct artistic movement: Camille Pissarro, Marc Chagall, Man Ray, Mark Rothko, and Larry Rivers. Each was instrumental in breaking with prior ways of seeing and creatively expressing the world around them.

Through them, we learn to see what has always been present and become amazed. Cost: none
