Some of the wheels are 3 meters wide. Only six of the seven horse still stand today.[2]The temple fell into disuse after an envoy ofJahangirdescreted the temple in the early 17th century.1. In the 13th century, king Prathama Narasingha Dev ordered 1200 carpenters to build a temple for Sun God. He invested 12 years of revenue in that project which took many years to complete. There is a beautiful story in the making of Konark temple. The head of those 1200 carpenters tasked for making the temple was a man called Bishu Moharana. His son, called Dharmapada, was born to be a architect. He studied all the basic techniques of temple making in very early years. At the time when the temple was about to over there was a problem of installing the top portion of the temple called "The Chuda". After many failures, the king became very angry with the carpenters. He then ordered to complete the work in 7 days otherwise every carpenter will be hanged. All were in fear, but then Dharmapada came and told them that he will do the job and will sacrifice himself for the sake of 1200 carpenters( As that would probably defame his father and all the other carpenters). Finally he installed "The Chuda" and jumped to theBay of Bengaland shown his bravery and goodness to all the world.
