Ziegler Ave, Kooringal, 2650 Ph: 6922 5155 [email protected] KOORINGAL HIGH SCHOOL Success in Learning TERM 2 WEEK 4 17 May 2016 Ziegler Congratulations this week: A number of students have gained selection in Riverina teams to participate at CHS state carnivals, they include: Ben H - Rugby Union Zac Pinney - Football Tyson Hodge - Open Rugby League Trial s Alex Mc, Sam S and Ben Nosworthy have all been selected in the 2016 Arts Initiative Boys Vocal program. This will involve two days at Griffith practicing and performing. Eve St John was successful in the first audition to attend the Talent Development Project workshop later this year. KHS has had several talented students go through this system - Darren Coggan, Brendon Boney, Ellen Harding, Jennifer Fitzgerald to name a few. Kooringal High is performing well in a range of sporting events, with wins in the Currie and Carroll Cups. Our netball teams also performed well at the Tracey Gunson Shield games. The junior team made the semi-finals after a very strong performances in the pool games. The U16 Rugby Union team had a very strong win last week in the rain and will play their next round in the coming weeks. Krystal Jessup has been selected in the Australian U18 & U21 fencing team. This is an incredible result as Krystal is in year 9 and Krystal will be competing against competitors a lot older than her. The school community wishes her the best for the upcoming competitions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff involved in the events listed above. These teachers all take personal time to coach or organise the events and extend the positive experiences and opportunities of the students at Kooringal High. Thanks for a job well done. The last two weeks at Kooringal High have seen a number of major events conducted within the school. The completion of year 11 Mid-Course exams saw yr 11 students have the opportunity to further develop their exam skills and test their knowledge for their preliminary courses. Both year 11 & 12 had 1/2 day sessions on study skills presented by Elevate Education. This is the fourth year Kooringal High has been involved in the program. Feedback from students continues to be very positive. There was the opportunity for the parents to learn about these new study skills and how they can best support their child through the senior years with a parent information evening on Monday night. Naplan has concluded for another year, with years 7 & 9 sitting these tests over three days. They are always challenging however they are a great opportunity for students to see how they rank against other students in Australia. Year 10 Commerce had the yearly excursion to Sydney visiting a variety of sites. Once again Kooringal High received glowing comments about the students behaviour and interest in the activities they participated in.

PACER

Students from Kooringal High School have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist the families of our students in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed to us $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate was paid directly to our school and we thank PACER for their contribution.

BELL SHAKESPEARE

Wow! What a Performance.Friday 6th May saw KHS host the team from Bell Shakespeare for an adapted version of Hamlet in the PAV. This was the third year we’ve run the event and, as always, the actors did a fantastic job of entertaining and engaging their audience.

Shakespeare has a reputation for being challenging in his language and Hamlet is a complicated play, but the team’s performance carried their audience from start to finish.

This year, more than previous years, the audience was very mixed in terms of age and experience and it was great to see students from most English classes (yrs 8-12) choosing to experience what, in the past, they might have dismissed as ‘too hard’ or ‘too dull’. Instead, they were treated to a typical Shakespearean feast of betrayal, murder and jest, with even the harshest critics (Yr 8 boys) grudgingly admitting they enjoyed the performance. Looking forward to next year. GET YOUR TICKETS EARLY!

SENIOR DEBATING

On Friday the senior debating team travelled to Albury for round 2 and 3 of the debating competition. First up was Albury High School on the topic of gambling as sponsors for sport. The second debate was against Murray High School . Unfortunately the team lost both debates. However, they worked really well as a team, and improved out of sight throughout the day. They put up a good challenging debate on both occasions and should be proud of their efforts.

Year 10 Commerce Excursion to SydneyStudents loved the opportunity to explore Sydney and learn firsthand how the law and government works on their recent Commerce excursion to Sydney.

Highlights included sitting in on the Roger Rogerson murder trial at the Supreme Court. In the words of the students” it was a real eye opener”. So too was the guided walking tour of the streets of Kings Cross at night with people who had experienced, drug addiction, gaol time, homelessness and discrimination. Their messages were blunt and powerful. They warned of the dangers of drugs by telling their stories.

Students also visited the ABC TV and radio studios, Westfield Tower and NSW parliament for Question time. They could not believe the poor behaviour of our elected leaders.

Students walked 42 kilometers in two days to all corners of the city. They walked from Bronte to Bondi, had dinner at China town, went to the top of Westfield Tower and toured the Opera House. They conducted research by interviewing the public in Martin Place and gained confidence as they completed more interviews.

The last day saw students embark on the Amazing Race through the city to information and taking selfies at 60 sites. The race took them to places many would not normally venture but they now realise the diversity that the city has to offer.

The behaviour of the students was again outstanding. They were always prompt which is so important in a jam packed itinerary. They loved being responsible for their own learning and rose to the occasion. The trust in these students was well founded and the students, their parents and the school should be very proud of such a fine group.
