The B.C. govern-ment should immedi-

ately put an extra $50 million into the bud-get of the troubled Ministry of Children

and Family Devel-opment, and wind down the independent watchdog that high-

lights the worst cases of young people who die in ministry care.

Those are among the recommendations of a review by former dep-uty minister Bob Ple-cas, released Monday. Plecas said the minis-try needs a four-year strategic plan to build up resources, starting with hiring 120 addi-tional child protection social workers in the first year and building from there.

Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond has issued a string of reports on child protection fail-ures. The most recent one looked at an ab-original teen named

Paige, who died of a drug overdose in Vancouver’s down-town east side after 30 child-protection reports and interven-tions with her alco-holic mother.

Another recent case was Alex Ger-vais, an 18-year-old who fell to his death in September from a fourth-floor hotel room where he had been housed by the ministry after his Ab-botsford group home was shut down due to poor conditions.

Turpel-Lafond re-jected Plecas’ sugges-tion that an internal “contrarian” and a ministry spokesper-son similar to those

employed by police forces would be trust-ed by the public to identify and report on issues in the ministry.

Plecas said priva-cy rules need to be changed so an all-party committee of MLAs can be briefed on child death and serious injury cases, allowing opposition MLAs to provide the oversight and criti-cism they bring to other ministries of the B.C. government.

Children and Family Development Minis-ter Stephanie Cadieux said she can’t commit to specific financial measures until the provincial budget is presented in Febru-

ary, but she has the support of Premier Christy Clark and the cabinet to increase re-sources for the minis-try.

Turpel-Lafond said accumulated cuts and freezes to the ministry budget leave it at least $100 million below what it needs to keep up with its caseload.

She also objected to Plecas’ statement in his report that no sys-tem will ever protect all children in govern-ment care from death, which he described as rare. There have been 90 deaths so far in the current fiscal year, Turpel-Lafond said.

Lonely Planet, the

world’s most well-known travel guide, has responded after

Cranbrook residents took umbrage with the guide’s description of

Cranbrook.“We’re aware of the

Cranbrook campaign

and we’re big fans of the mugs, though of course we’re truly

sorry about the de-scription and certainly didn’t mean to cause offence. We task our writers to personally visit every place they write about and ask them to provide a fair and honest evaluation, but we are constantly reassessing content with every new edi-tion,” said Natalie Nicolson, representing Lonely Planet.

The mugs she is re-ferring to were pro-duced by the crew at Cranbrookcity.com, a group who is planning to donate cash from sales of the mugs to a local charity.

In various incarna-tions, the page on the Lonely Planet website referred to Cranbrook as “a depressingly workaday town” and “an old downtown area with little charm (and some less charm-ing lowlifes). Skip it and head on to either Kimberley or Cres-ton.”

Nicolson points out that the phrase “a de-pressingly workaday

town” came from an older review.

The latest review states:

“The area’s main center, 31km southeast of Kimberley, Cran-brook is a dusty cross-roads. Hwy 3/95 bi-sects the town, which is a charmless strip of motels. However, it has one great rea-son for stopping: the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel. It has some fine examples of classic Canadian trains, including the luxurious 1929 edition of the Trans-Canada Limited, a legendary train that ran from Montréal to Vancou-ver.”

That is an improve-ment over previous descriptions. Nicolson said that Lonely Plan-et’s destination editor covering Canada, Al-exander Howard, will take the comments the company has been get-ting on social media into account for forth-coming editions.#18-9 Ave S, Cranbrook

In what’s become an annual tradition of saying thanks to its customer and staff, Chris Thom (and his family) of Rocky Mountain Diesel and Autobody have taken the joy of giving back to health care a main-stay of their holiday spirit.

Over the years the

family and business have supported EKFH in providing funding for various areas of care for both hospitals and health care fa-cilities throughout the East Kootenay. For the past several years the Autobody side of Rocky Mountain Die-sel & Autobody con-ducts a Crashed Cars

awareness event. Ev-ery vehicle that enters and leaves the shop receives a personal message from Chris that shares the story of their recognizing the business support and their employees’ com-mitment with a gift to EKFH.

“It’s an exceptional story of giving back to

community,” says Don-na Grainger, EKFH Executive Director. “Although the focus of the Starlite Campaign is about lighting stars atop the East Koote-nay Regional Hospital roofline it really is the stars on the ground that are making a huge difference in the qual-ity of health care here in the East Koote-nay. Chris and Rocky Mountain Diesel have had an incredible im-pact through their gen-erous financial support over the years, “adds Grainger.

This year the $10,000 gift is being dedicated to support the East Kootenay Regional Hospital Oncology

Unit.“We all know some-

one whose lives, indi-vidually and the family, have been affected with a cancer diagnosis. The gift to the oncology unit is our way of high-lighting and saying thanks for the talented and dedicated oncol-ogy team that provides services to individu-als from throughout the region,” explains Chris Thom, Owner at Rocky Mountain Die-sel & Autobody.

Whether you wish to say thanks, acknowl-edge a loved one, or simply just because a gift to the Starlite Campaign can provide funding to purchase critically needed medi-

cal equipment and/or patient comforts. Do-nations can be made on-line at www.ekfh.ca; at your local hospi-

tal or health care facil-ity or through Canada Post to EKFH, 13 24th Ave N, Cranbrook, BC V1C 3H9.

Students in Mrs. Halldorson’s Grade 5/6 class recently spearheaded the annual Food Drive at Kootenay Orchards Elementary School. These students were responsible for going to classrooms each morning to collect and tally the items that were brought in. On December 16th, they packed all of the items up and sent them to the Cranbrook Food Bank. This year a total of 1322 items were collected. It is so nice to see a school come together to support those in need. Thank you Kootenay Orchards students and families for your generous donations this year!

After a full year of gathering, sorting and plac-ing, the Kimberley Pipe Band are proud to have a Limited Edition History Book available for sale. It’s a beautiful, hard cover book that is filled with hun-dreds pictures of the band’s history dating back as far as 1927. This memory and picture book was compiled by former Pipe Major Jim Warriner and his wife Elsie. In preparation for the pipe band’s 90th Anniversary and Tattoo in July of 2017, the band felt the timing was perfect to offer this to the public. The copies can be purchased for $30 from Kimberley’s Centex and from the Edward Jones of-fice in Cranbrook.

Pictured is Kimberley’s Mayor, Don McCormick accepting a book from Jim Warriner.

Cranbrook’s down-town has a mighty fes-tive feel to it these days. Along with the City’s lamp post decora-tions and tree lighting, shoppers have been treated to creative and alluring displays in al-most every store front window since the end of November. From old fashion Christmas themes to a dazzling evening light show it’s well worth a leisurely stroll.

The Cranbrook Downtown Business Association, want-ing to add incentive to the decorating tra-dition, collaborated with SNAPd East Kootenay and Sweet Gestures Chocolate Shoppe to hold the 1st annual “Spirit of the Holidays” decorating contest, open to all downtown shop loca-tions.

Joey Hoechsmann, DBA Chairman, ex-plained, “One of the DBA’s mandates is to create a better down-town experience. We were very impressed with the amount of downtown businesses that have embraced the holiday spirit and decorated their win-dows and stores. This contest is a great way to encourage down-town businesses to have a little fun and attract shoppers in the process.”

On Thursday De-cember 17 Lotus Books was named the winner. Owner Erin Dalton claimed the prize which includes a ¼ page ad in SNAPd East Kootenay’s Janu-ary 2016 edition and a stunning (and deli-cious) Christmas Holi-day Basket from Sweet Gestures Chocolate Shoppe. “The book tree in our window was built from hand-rolled cones made of pages

from a misprinted copy of local author Bruce Kirkby’s  Sand Dance. Thanks to our friends & followers on Facebook for taking the time to comment & share the photos”, said Dalton when asked about her shop’s unique window pre-sentation.

Both Snapd and the Cranbrook DBA were pleased with their part-nership on this first annual Holiday Deco-rating contest and are grateful to Sweet Ges-

tures for offering to enhance the prize. “We encouraged participa-tion from the down-town business commu-nity urging them to be creative, be festive and have fun,” said Snapd owner Janice Sommer-feld. “There are many businesses that have their windows beauti-fully decorated and we invite them to partici-pate next year. Con-gratulations to Lotus Books as the 2015 win-ner!”

Hugs: To the gracious woman at the Dollar Store in the Tamarack Mall who helped my son out. He is recover-ing from an accident and unable to work. He was there with his 4 young children getting birthday supplies and had to step away for a moment while paying

for his items. This lady stepped in and paid for his merchandise. Thank you so much, that was very kind of you.

Slugs: To David Wilks committee for not yet (December 2015) pick-ing up election signs be-tween Wycliffe (airport junction) and Marysville

(Jim Ogilvie Way).

Slugs: Santa: please bring the road contrac-tor on the Salmo Cres-ton portion of the high-way some sand. It looks like he is the only one unable to sand this por-tion of our roads and that is so sad.

If tears could build a stairway, And memories were a lane, I would walk right up to heaven, To bring you home again.

No farewell words were spok-en, No time to say good-bye, You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why.

My heart still aches with sad-ness, And secret tears still fl ow, What it meant to lose you, No one will ever know.

Missing you...Love Mom, Dad, Jordan andDaymon

If each person reused two feet of ribbon this

Christmas it would save 61,000 kms of ribbon.

What You Need to Know About Glass

The glass collection bins in the East Kootenay are for container glass only.

That means only container glass that holds food and beverages. Some examples include: ✓ Jam jars ✓ Pickle jars ✓ Cheez whiz jars ✓ Olive oil jars ✓ Iced tea or wine bottles

These containers must be well rinsed with lids removed.

The following are NOT accepted in the glass bins: ✕ Dishes of any kind (clear drinking

glasses, pyrex dishes, corel ware, pottery, plates, etc). No dishes!

✕ Shower doors, windshields ✕ Lightbulbs ✕ Picture frame glass ✕ Glass trinkets (like candlestick holders and tree decorations)

On December 25th alone, over 30 million bags of

garbage will be thrown out of Canadian households.

If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts

in reused paper or gift bags, it would save enough paper

to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

Reuse Comes Before RecycleOver the holidays many people will receive gifts that will replace perfectly good older items. Instead of throwing good items away, please consider giving them away so they can be reused.

There are Reuse Centres at the Cranbrook, Kimberley, Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood Transfer Stations and Columbia Valley Landfill.

The Reuse Centres accept household items in good working condition. Everything in the Reuse Centres is available at no cost.

Some examples of items that are accepted in the Reuse Centres include:

✓ Chairs ✓ Pictures✓Televisions ✓ Small dishes✓Light fixtures ✓ Tools

Items that cannot be accepted include large appliances, tires, mattresses, automotive parts, scrap metal, wood and clothing.

Please Keep it CleanOur yellow recycling bins are often on private property and it is so

important that we keep them clean.

Please put all recyclables in the bin.

Over the holidays, the bins see a huge increase in volume. While our contactor will be working hard to empty the bins more frequently, sometimes they will be full. If you encounter a full bin, please look for another bin in the area or come back. Never leave recyclables on or around the bins. Thank you for helping us keep our recycling areas clean!

To find the holiday hours at RDEK transfer stations

and landfills, visit www.rdek.bc.ca

For more information contact the RDEK at 250-489-2791 or 1-888-478-7335

That’s a Wrap Paper based wrapping paper can be recycled in any of the yellow

bins in the East Kootenay and in the curbside recycling programs in Fernie and Invermere. From cards and envelopes to wrapping and tissue paper, please recycle as much as possible.

Recyclable: ✓ Paper based gift wrap ✓ Cards ✓Envelopes ✓ Gift tags ✓ Tissue paper ✓ Cardboard boxes ✓ Brown shipping/packaging paper

Not Recyclable ✕ Foil based wrapping paper ✕ Envelopes or gift tags with foil lining ✕ Bows and Ribbons

Electronics and Small AppliancesElectronics are often a hot holiday gift item. Old electronics that are still in good working condition can be taken to an RDEK Reuse Centre; however, if they’re no longer working, they may be able to be recycled.

Electronics recycling depots are located at the Cranbrook, Invermere and Fernie Bottle Depots. These depots are for small volumes only.

The following items can be dropped off FREE OF CHARGE for recycling:

✓ Computers – desktop and laptops ✓Monitors ✓Keyboards and Computer ✓Mice ✓Printers ✓Televisions ✓Fax Machines ✓Scanners ✓DVD and VHS players ✓Stereos and MP3 docking stations ✓Radios ✓Discman, Walkman, MP3 players ✓Earphones ✓Microphones ✓Speakers ✓Cable, satellite and PVR boxes ✓Vehicle audio and video systems

The Cranbrook and Fernie Depots (not Invermere) also accept more than 120 small electrical appliances, ranging in size from electric toothbrushes to countertop microwave ovens.

Products are divided into categories including: kitchen countertop, time measurement, weight measurement, garment care, air treatment, floor care and personal care.

For details, visit regeneration.ca

Yellow Bin BasicsThe yellow bins in the RDEK and curbside programs in Fernie and Invermere take the following:

✓ Mixed paper – including Christmas cards and envelopes (as long as they’re not foil)

✓ Aluminum and tin cans – please rinse well! No aluminum foil, pie plates, etc. Only cans are accepted

✓ Cardboard – all types; boxes must be flattened. Cardboard covered with wax, foil or soiled with grease or food waste cannot be recycled

✓ Plastics – Grocery bags (garbage must be removed from grocery bags) and plastics #1 - #6 (except Styrofoam)

Plastics NOT accepted:

✕ Styrofoam (even though it's marked as a #6) ✕ Unmarked plastics – if it doesn’t have a number on it, it can’t go in

the bin. Often the lids are made out of different plastics than the containers, so you have to check carefully

✕ #7 plastics

Batteries IncludedBoth alkaline and rechargeable batteries are recyclable. Drop o locations include:

Cranbrook: • Cranbrook Photo • Staples • The Source (in Tamarack

Centre) • Kootenay Communications

Kimberley: • Kimberley City Hall

Elk Valley: • City of Fernie • Fernie Aquatic Centre • District of Elkford • Sparwood Communications

Columbia Valley: • Selkirk TV & Appliance • Home Hardware • The Source

Flip Your Lid!Metal lids cannot be recycled

in the yellow bins. Please make sure you remove the lids before putting glass containers in the recycling bin. Metal lids can be recycled for free at Columbia

Recycle in Marysville.

Styrofoam is NOT recyclable in the yellow bins. The only Styrofoam

recycling depot in the East Kootenay is the

Cranbrook Bottle Depot.

No Styrofoam
