COVID restrictions are becoming a normal part of everyday life. We encourage our community to continue adhering to these restrictions and work with our school in moving forward while still trying to maintain both continuity of service and our established relationships. This week we had a parent request to see their child receive an award. While this request is usually accommodated, at this time we are unable to accommodate such a request. To assist the parent to share in this moment with their child, we videoed the presentation of awards at our Monday afternoon assembly. While my camera work wasn’t the best, it was still a wonderful way for our community and our families to share in the delight of seeing their children receive such awards. As principal, I will endeavour to continue this action while we are in these restricted times.

At Kootingal Public School, like all other public schools, visitors to schools are restricted to essential visitors. We encourage all families to consider alternate ways of communicating and dealing with our school. We do have our text messaging service, Facebook inbox and telephones in which to speak with members of staff. We can also perform online video calls via Zoom. However, if you do need to come on to the school site, please ensure you sign in on the visitor’s register located at the front desk and scan the QR code. The visitor’s register is the department’s register, while the QR code is for NSW Health. We know it takes additional time to do both, but they are requirement of the department. If you do not have access to QR code technology, our front office staff are able to record your details on your behalf into a spreadsheet that can be sent to NSW Health if required.

While we still adhere to COVID restrictions, there are other sections of our school that are still forging ahead. This week Mr Cracknell and Miss Merrett selected both football teams to compete in the Tamworth Zone PSSA Football knockout and gala day. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams will compete next Thursday at the Gipps Street fields. In line with COVID restrictions, only one parent is permitted to attend the gala day. Each parent must sign in using the appropriate QR code for the event.

This week we had a contingent of five staff attending further training in the implementation and delivery of the QuickSmart numeracy program. Currently, this program targets students in year 4 and aims to improve the speed and accuracy of mental arithmetic in the four operations. It is always imperative to ensure continual development of staff in the delivery of our intervention programs like we do in our classroom practice. At the professional learning event, our staff presented to their peers the current progress of our program including feedback from students regarding their participation.

This term we commence our Come & Try Program for Kindergarten 2022. Our Come & Try Program during Term 3 is designed for all children intending to enrol in Kindergarten in 2022, regardless of school. The Program will operate on Wednesday afternoons each week for part of Term 3 2021. A bus will transport those students attending from Kootingal and District PreSchool from 1:15pm and return the children by 3pm. Parents may wish, however, to bring their child at 1:30pm and collect them at 3pm. The program will orientate children to school and to the Kindergarten setting, as well as help develop

social skills, gross and fine motor skills, literacy and numeracy skills necessary for a confident and smooth start to school life. At the start of Term 4, our Kindergarten Bright Stars Transition program will commence. This program is designed for students intending to commence Kindergarten at Kootingal Public School. All days will be advertised throughout long day care and pre-school centres and through our normal means of communication.

If you know of a family that has a child who may enrol in Kindergarten next year, please direct them to the school. We welcome parents and children to our school at any time to view our facilities and as a part of our transition program. As well, we would like to offer assistance in choosing a school and ensuring a sound start for each child.
