Meet the Teacher The “Meet the Teachers’ Night” was held in the beginning of our school year and it provided our parents with the opportunity to meet their child’s new class teacher and specialist teachers and to find out about the teaching and learning program for the term/year in Primary. Many thanks to all the Parents and Guardians who attended this event and made it a successful and memorable one for all of us at KIS.

Meet the Teacher (Reception)Reception classes had a “Meet the Teachers” Day on August 24th – the afternoon right after the students were dismissed from their first day of school. Parents were briefed on the curriculum, class rules, and teachers’ expectations. The parents also had a chance to visit their child’s classroom to see the class set-up, get to experience sitting on their child’s little chair, and saw the materials that were used in the class. This year we also offered the parents Positive Parenting where we met with each parent after school to learn more about their child. The meetings went well and we think all parents left the school feeling a bit more relax after having a better understanding of their child’s teachers and the school! We look forward to a great year learning and growing together!!

New Staff

I come from a little beach town called Gonubie in South Africa. I am the youngest of three siblings and the only daughter. My family and friends mean the world to me. My love for travel and adven-ture lead me to teach here in Hong Kong. After my schooling I spent a year abroad in New York where I was an au pair to three children. This is where my travel journey and my passion for working with children begun. Thereafter, I studied at Stellenbosch University where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities and my TEFL quali-fication. I then acquired my Post Graduate Certificate in Education while working at Herschel Girls’ School in Cape Town, where I was a teacher and a live in Boarding Assistant at the school boarding house.Since arriving in Hong Kong to teach at the end of 2016, I have both taught and learnt so much through my journey as a teacher. I hope to continue my journey in Hong Kong and I am eager to gain more knowledge and experience through my future encounters as an educator.

I am originally from Scotland but have been living in Hong Kong since I was 5 years old. I have a twin brother, a younger brother and my parents who are all living in the United Kingdom. I am a qualified teacher with the Hong Kong EDB after completing my Post Graduate Certificate at Sunderland University. I have 2 years classroom teaching experience at Discovery Mind Primary School and have been teaching English for 9 years at various schools and learning centers around Hong Kong. I love raising money for charity and my most notable charity event was called ‘Crazy Hair Day’ where the children in my previous school cut my hair into a ‘Green Mo Hawk’ to raise money for the charity Hands on Hong Kong.Along with my passion for teaching is my love for adventure and sports. I love rock climbing, boxing and going on hikes on the weekend. I also have a strong interest for traveling having visited the Philippines, Korea, Thailand and Cambodia last year. An interesting fact about me is I once flew an airplane in Canada. I am looking forward to teaching at Korean International School and gaining more experience as an educator to inspire young minds for the future. I am confident that we will have a successful year and that we will have lots of fun learning.

I am originally from South Africa and hold a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Post Graduate Certificate of Education, specializing in lower primary. This will be my fifth year teaching in Hong Kong and my first at KIS! Before moving to Hong Kong, I spent three years teaching in Incheon, South Korea. I believe in creating a safe, stimulating and happy environment in the classroom. I am positive that all of my students will have a successful year full of enriching experiences.

I was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and have been in Hong Kong for the past 4 years. I com-pleted my Bachelor’s Degree in Education in South Africa, before moving to the U.K. In the U.K I taught in an Independent preparatory school for 4 years. I was also part of the Boarding house estab-lishment. I have taught kindergarten and primary school from year 3 to year 8.I enjoy the outdoors, sports and travelling. Hong Kong has been a great place for me to grow and learn as a teacher. I am always eager for a new challenge and look forward to my time at Korean International. I am very excited to be working alongside Ms. Ferguson and Mr. Mohm. I am confident it is going to be a successful year for everyone. I know this is going to be a great year group and we are all going to have lots of fun through learning .I look forward to working as a team alongside my colleagues, children and parents.

I am originally from a small town in South Africa called East London. Since I was young I have always known I wanted to be a teacher. In 2010 I studied a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Development) through the University of South Africa. During this time I surrounded myself with any opportunity to be with kids by filling in for teachers on sick leave, lending an extra hand in the classrooms when needed as well as au pairing for 2 families in the afternoons for 3 years. This will be my third year of teaching in Hong Kong and I am very excited to be a part of the KIS family. I look forward to working with my colleagues and parents to help provide a happy and fun learning environment for my students.

New Staff

I am originally from Guangdong, China. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Chinese Language and Literature in China, a Master degree of Education majoring in Teaching Chinese as a Second language and Postgraduate Diploma in Education majoring in Chinese language from the University of Hong Kong. I have been teaching in Hong Kong for 6 years. What I believe in Education is to accompany, to guide, to communicate, and to inspire. I love travelling all around the world which broadens my horizons a lot. In addition, I also like writing. Life is like writing a book, and our footprints are the pages of it. No matter what’s going on ahead of you, just try to “write” your world with your heart. This year, I write a new page to my “book”. It is a joy and honor to work with the excellent team in KIS. I look forward to a brilliant and wonderful school year.

I am a Science teacher for Years 7-9 and a Chemistry teacher for Year 10 and 13, I am also a Year 10 form teacher. I have lived in Hong Kong for the last 3 years. Although most of my school years were spent in Yorkshire, England, I was actually born in South Africa. This is where I developed my love for sport, in particular cricket, a sport that I am excited about bringing to KIS in the future.I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences as well as a PGCE and have been teaching for the last 6 years. Cricket is my major passion outside of work and I play competitively for the Hong Kong Cricket Club. Aside from cricket I also enjoy playing football and hiking all of the beautiful trails that Hong Kong has to offer. Travel is another passion of mine and I hope to explore more of Asia and the rest of the world in my free time. I am looking forward to a year at KIS that will excite, challenge and educate my students as well as myself.

I have been passionate about music from a very young age. I began my training at the Hong Kong Baptist University, and later gained my Master degree in Music Education at the University of Texas, U.S.A. After graduation, I have been playing cello in the orchestras, ensembles and choirs in USA, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong respectively. Besides music, I also love learning languages. I believe that music and languages can connect people and help us to understand different cultures. I worked in another international school in Hong Kong for 5 years and have been coaching instrumental classes and orchestra in KIS since 2013. I am looking forward to a great year filled with joy of music and great learning opportunities for our students!

I was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Post Graduate Degree in Education, specializing in Elementary Education from Seoul National University of Education. I am a qualified teacher with the Hong Kong EDB and the Korean Ministry of Education. I have been teaching for more than 10 years in Hong Kong. Before I moved to Hong Kong, I taught at a local public elementary school in Seoul for many years as a home room teacher. It is great that children are able to keep up with their Korean and to learn Korean as a foreign language at the Korean International School. I will create a positive, challenging and comfortable atmosphere in my classroom and will help students be creative, open-minded, and to become global thinkers. I am looking forward to beginning my journey at KIS and hope to be able to contribute my skills to KIS community.

Author Visits

Ms. Sheetal Tahilramani visited us on September 22, 2017. She is the author of the book titled Happy to be Blu.

Blu is a tiny, sweet raindrop who is about to go on a big and wild adventure! As he twists and turns, he learns to let go of his fear and enjoy the ride, all while learning that change can't change who he is on the inside.

“I love your book because I love the part when Blu said to the world, ‘Change doesn’t change the essence of me! Water I am. Water I will always be. Wherever and whenever, I am happy to be me!’”Jaena Year 3F

Library Open House for Parents on 13th October, 2017Our KIS library was open to all parents last October 13, 2017. In line with the celebration of Diwali, we had a short introduction to the festival which was led by Ms. Jay. This was a great opportunity for parents to explore our newly renovated library.

Library Open House for Parents

“To create the True to Life Books, Jan follows wild animals, taking photographs and writing about them in their natural habitats. She is the ‘voice’ of the animals to help their survival. Jan has travelled to China, Borneo, India, Uganda, Sri Lanka and ten times for the African animals. She has played with orangutans in Borneo, chimps in Uganda and pandas on the moun-tains of China. She walked with four young lions in Zambia and has been charged by elephants in Amboseli. A cheetah came up to her in Nanyuki and she has held the horn of a rhino!”

Ms Latta talked about her journey and educational video that can be found at http://www.truetolifebooks.com.au/.

Diwali Guest Speaker from 9th -13th October, 2017 Ms. Jaysharee, from our own KIS family, introduced and shared to all primary students how Diwali is celebrated and how it was originated.

Ms. Jay is our year 4 assistant teacher. She has been working in KIS for six years. We are very happy and grateful for having her celebrate Diwali with us in our KIS library!

Assembly

We were treated to a fabulous ‘Diwali’ assembly The students informed and entertained us through their sharing of the traditions and stories of Diwali. Some of our Reception to Year 6 children also performed. The assembly was made even more special with everyone in school dressed in bright colours to jointly celebrate Diwali and in support of the Hong Kong Community Chest Dress Casual Day.

Thank you to the Diwali committee who helped the students, the parents for your support for the children and to those members of staff who volunteered to take part in the dancing!

Diwali assembly

What a wonderful assembly we all had together.

Secondary students joining in and leading the presentations so confidently; the whole school was rocking and buzzing with thoughts and actions about Mid Autumn Festival Chuseok celebrations.

Great story telling, great singing, wonderful staff dancing and the kids involvement; there was also an amazing array of costumes.

Mid Autumn Festival & Chuseok celebration

The Primary school was a “splendiferous” place this week with a “wondercrump” celebration held to mark the anniver-sary of Roald Dahl‘s day. It was brilliant to see the children dressed in various hats, beards and other models they made associated with Dahl’s magical storytelling. Thank you to all the teachers who helped the children with their designs and to Mr. Lau for his organisation of the day ; great fun was had by all.

Class Trips

Geography Fieldwork Site Visits

On the 27 September 2017, Mr Williams our new head of science and Mr Cardinal took all the KIS Secondary Students studying Physics went to the Computer Reconstruction of Cosmic History at HKUST. Renowned Professor Simon White, the 2017 Shaw Prize Winner in Astronomy, has brilliantly delivered an enlightening presentation. He has shown how we can improve our comprehension of our universe with computer simulations. These have been used as an alternative to experimentation to validate science theories when it is not possible to conduct one.

HKUST Astronomy Lecture

The Social Studies Program kicked off the first leg of its fieldwork based assessments on September 26 when the Year 11 Geography students climbed Lantau Peak to study weathering and erosion on the mountain. The students began the hike at Ngong Ping and trekked up the mountain to an elevation of around 1,000 meters. During the hike, the students followed a checklist of IGCSE Geogra-phy related terms and processes and then photographed and documented them into a fieldwork diary.

The second fieldwork site was Tai Mo Shan and Tai Shing Stream, where the students trekked a river to explore, photograph, and document the processes associated with erosion and transporta-tion of rock.

The students will be doing a number of fieldworks throughout the year. The next trip is to Tung Lung Chau.

Day Camps

The Reception students had a blast on their first day camp to Mui Wo on October 9th. The lovely weather, sunny but with a light breeze, which made the outing even more enjoyable. The children had fun building sand castles by the beach, playing games like “You Say, I Say”, spotting Water Buffalos and having a picnic on an outdoor area. Although it was a tiring day, with some of them falling asleep on the way back to school, the students have had an awesome time and it was overall, a worthwhile outing!

Reception Day Camp

Year 1 Camp

The Year One classes had a wonderful time attending Day Camp on October 9th. First they rode the bus out to Lantau Island and saw the wonderful view of the ocean and green hills.

Upon arrival, the camp leaders from “Treasure Island” at Pui O Beach were waiting for the children at the bus stop. They started the children out with games and songs, and then lead the children to the beach for some fun in the sand!

The children had a great time working together, eating a picnic lunch and playing tag with over 100 children from K.I.S! They also saw buffalo and birds along the way, and enjoying getting their hands dirty in the sand.On behalf on the Year One children and teachers, a BIG THANK YOU to the Coordinators at K.I.S for organising such an amazing day!

Wall of Fame

Our student Flauta Gen Randolph joined the “The next BMW Designer 2017” car design competition and entered the finals. The BMW and Sing Tao Daily invited our principal, teachers and students representatives to attend their award ceremony.

The Next BMW Designer 2017

It is a long way to success. It's only a story and I am happy to share about Oswin's baseball journey with you. He started playing baseball (T-ball) at 5 years old. He joined the Hong Kong Baseball Association training program for a year and then joined Tsuen Wan Baseball Club. At that time, he learned the basic skills. The coaches were tough and highly focused on fitness training. At that young age, they have to run as much as 10+ laps of 600m. Also, at that time they learn how to work as a team. Sadly, the Club was not able to recruit new players. Therefore, most of our players joined other Club. Oswin joined Shatin Baseball Club at around 8 years old. It is one of the local baseball club with long history in Hong Kong. He played various positions including pitcher, catcher, short stop, second and third base. Excitement was buzzing from students as they participated and competed for the first time representing The Tigers from Sai Wan Ho.The Year 4 boys from the Football ECA’s at KIS were invited to assign two 7-a-side teams to take part in a one day tournament at Happy Valley. Opposition school teams included were NAIS; NIS; IMS; Anfield; YCIS; FIS; ICA and KIS. PD Day & WorkshopsProfessional Development Day on Friday 6th October Thank you everyone for a day spent together. The PD day took a lot or organizing and reorganizingMy thanks go to those on the Leadership team who never gave up and worked their magic to bring everyone a day of inspiration.

This year we were lucky that we had many volunteers to hold a workshop sessions; we wanted to balance ideas about working with staff across the school collaboratively, with staff in a committee to plan events and actionswith staff across the section to share an idea. PD days are also times when staff can shine too; thanks to all those of you who stepped up and forward to offer to do something for their colleagues

Our thanks to all those other outside speakers/groups who volunteered to come forward to do something for us all.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT OVER THE DAY

International School Fair The Standard Fair and the Hong Kong International School FestivalWe were represented at both Fairs; September 16 was another big day for us at Korean International School. This was the day we ran a booth at the International Schools Festival. Our second outing in two weeks - The first being the Standards Fair. We expected the event to be quite interesting but in fact the result was nothing short of astounding; we were also invited to the Hong Kong International Schools Leadership Breakfast with more than sixty senior leaders attending. At the Hong Kong International School Festival we had a cast of 12 teachers and the following students; Marco /Prestley / Sid/ Jayan/Maria/Omega/Fabia/It was great to see our school participating in this event we did ourselves proud. It was a great marketing exercise, but more importantly it showed Hong Kong the quality of our young students and our teachers. So many of the visitors commented about how; enthusiastic, helpful, confident, competent and communicative our Y11/12/13 students were on the subject of their school. They really all were amazing and awesome! They conveyed to many parents the strengths of our school in many languages not just English, at times I heard them extolling our virtues in Cantonese and Chinese [Mandarin!] So too I might add were the members of staff who volunteered their time on the Saturday to support me and the school. They too were amazing and awesome!

Together the students and teachers dealt with wave after wave of interested families who were asking many questions and yearning for information about our school we all worked hard but boy were we tired at the end! Also my thanks to the office staff and Patti for all their input and help especially when we thought our boxes had disappeared. Patti you were a life saver. Jenny in the school office was wonderful. Thank you once again for your continuous support, patience and commitment as together we are moving KIS forward to make us become a ‘school of choice’ in Hong Kong and to establish a place in the International schools’ ecosystem ’the cradle of excellence and innovation’. Once again a great big THANK YOU to all the Y11/Y12/13 students, the teachers and office and admin staff. Please let me state for the record how proud and pleased I was about our school’s enthusiastic response to this event… we came… we saw… we conquered.

Box of HopeOur School participates in the Box of Hope each year, it is a worthwhile and meaningful way for the students to give back in order to make a positive difference to another child's life.‘Box of Hope’. Box of Hope is an annual charity project aimed at providing useful/educational gifts to underprivileged children in Hong Kong and Asia donated by Hong Kong school children and local organisations. To create a Box of Hope, children put toys, games, toiletry items such as toothpaste & a toothbrush, combs, hair-brushes, soap and statio-nery items (no liquids or food items) into an empty cardboard box (e.g. a shoe box). The box is then wrapped in colourful paper and the completed Box of Hope sticker the children will bring home from school is stuck to the box. You can also wrap your box in house colours too! Please do not seal the box - the organisers need to be able to check the contents before they are sent off.Thank you to those who have already sent in their. Each child at KIS will be given an A5 sticker to bring home which has ideas about items that can be included in the box. It would be great if each family could donate a box of gifts. The website gives more information: http://boxofhope.org/home/main/en/ Let’s hope we can brighten the lives of many children.Box of Hope is an annual charity project aimed at providing useful/educational gifts to underprivileged children in Hong Kong&Asia donated by Hong Kong school ...All boxes must be brought to the school office between November 6th - 10th.Thank you for your support of this worthwhile event.

Notice to ParentsCover ArtThe overall winner will be named KIS Writer of the Year. All award-winning works will be published, along with a selection of shortlisted entries. The school reserves the right to “lightly edit” works that are published. New Journeys to the WestAlmost 1400 years ago, a brave young monk made a multi-year journey from China across the southwestern mountains to India. His trip was celebrated in a novel called Journey to the West, written about 500 years ago.In the novel version of the tale, the young monk, whose name is Xuanzang, is accompanied by magical companions, including the Monkey King, a friar and a talking pig. The odd group of friends battle strange monsters and suffer hard-ships, before learning that overcoming difficulties is necessary for the monk to find true spiritual fulfillment. But the true story on which the novel is based is also remarkable. The real life Xuanzang travelled for years and found a magical community of learning in India called Nalanda – which historians believe might be the first campus university in human history. So Journey to the West is really two collections of tales – one from the novelist’s imagination, and one from history. And it also launched a fascinating literary character. In real life, the monk learned about an Indian god called Hanuman. In the novel, we meet the Monkey King, a creature with magical powers who is mischievous but ultimately on the side of good.

Charity Events

from the IS Newsletter Team- Ms M. Chan, Mrs. G. Khoo, Ms. K. Suresh, Mr. J. Warburton & Ms. M. Shaw

The Charity Committee has had a successful start to the new school year. On Friday, 13th September, in celebration of The Diwali Festival, the Secondary students where provided with the opportunity to dress casually while the Primary students dressed in traditional wear. A fun day was had by all where the secondary students went around selling samosas. A total of $4,073 was raised for a local charity as well as the community chest.

Towards the end of September, Mexico was the victim of major earthquakes where they suffered many losses as well as damages to the towns. KIS decided to do our part to help contribute towards rebuilding their community and so on the 26th September the children were encouraged to dress in the Mexican colours and donate money towards the Mexican Earthquake Relief Charity. Here we were extremely successful raising a total of $16 300.

Thank you to all have joined in and contributed.
