Royal Canadian Legion Branch #8 (Virden MB). Revised Restrictions Proposed On Tuesday, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin presented new COVID-19 public health orders being considered for implementation after the current ones expire at midnight Friday. The measures would not apply in Northern Manitoba, where pandemic cases continue to rise. They include: Permitting two additional visitors (family or friends) to a household; Allowing outdoor visits of up to 5 people plus members of a household on private property; Increasing the maximum number of people who can attend a funeral from 5 to 10, plus the person officiating; Permitting retail stores to sell all products, with the current essential items list eliminated. The requirements to limit occupancyand maintain physical distancing would remain and be enforced; Allowing hair salons and barbershops to reopen at 25% capacity, with physical distancing in place and a requirement to collect information for contract tracing purposes; Permitting non-regulated health services such as reflexologists to reopen, with physical distancing in place and a requirement to collect contact tracing information. From Friday to Monday, approximately67,500 citizens provided feedback via an online survey regarding their preferences for relaxation of restrictions. Manitobans now have the opportunity to do the same regarding these proposed changes by visiting www.engagemb.ca. Once implemented, the new health orders will be in place for at least the next three weeks. Pack Hunters A new study has revealed a big surprise about electric eels—they hunt in packs. Prior to the study published in Ecology and Evolution, scientists thought the creatures hunted on their own, zapping and then eating fish solo. But in a Brazilian river in the Amazon, researchers for the first time documented a pack of Volta’s electric eels (technically, knifefish) teaming up to corral and kill small fish. The eels gather in groups of about 100, then encircle tetra fish and herd them to shallow waters. There, smaller groups of eels close in and zap the tetra, sometimes with enough force to send them flying out of the water. The demobilized tetra are then easy pickings. While it’s common for mammals to hunt together, the practice is rare among fish. The number of fish species who do this is thought to be about 10. Volta’s electric eels grow to roughly 8 feet in length and are capable of delivering an 860-volt shock, the most powerful of any creature on Earth. If 10 of them zapped at the same time, it would be enough to power 100 light bulbs, says Santana. And, yes, he’s been zapped himself, describing it as strong enough to cause numbness in his arms. “It’s a really strong discharge, however the duration’s really short,” he says. Researchers documented the hunting strategy multiple times on Brazil’s Iriri River, though they are not sure how widespread it is among eels elsewhere. They have begun a citizen science project to gather more information. Rocket Test Cut Short NASA cut short a test of the core stage of Boeing’smassive Space Launch System rocket on the weekend, leaving its future deep-space missions in flux. The so-called hot fire, which took place at NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, was meant to be the last of eight “Green Run” tests needed to ensure that the core stage of the rocket is ready for launch. With the core stage anchored vertically on a platform, the test began at about 5:27 p.m. ET and ran for just over one minute, well short of the scheduled time of eight minutes. The test shut down early after a mission controller declared a “major component failure” on one of the four RS-25 rocket engines from Aerojet Rocketdyne. All the engines shut down safely, and NASA still obtained some data from the test, but far less than hoped. On Tuesday, Boeing Space Launch System manager John Shannon said the test would have to run for at least 250 seconds to get the necessary data. Prior to the early shutdown, NASA was able to power up all the core stage systems, load more than 700,000 gallons of supercold propellant into the tanks, and fire all four engines at the same time to simulate a launch. Following the hot-fire test, NASA was supposed to ship the Space Launch System core stage to Kennedy Space Center in Florida next month for assemblywith Lockheed Martin’s Orion spacecraft. But that timeline now looks doubtful. At a press briefing Saturday, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said it’s too soon to tell if another hot fire will be necessary. When asked if a launch of the full Space Launch System rocket is feasible later this year, he said it’s too early to tell. If another hot fire is needed, the engines would need 21-30 days to reset, said John Honeycutt, who is NASA’s SLS program manager. He added that he doesn’t anticipate any significant design changes to the core stage. Worlds May Move The International Ice Hockey Federation will make a decision in the coming days on whether to pull its world championship from Belarus as pressure increases from sponsors over a crackdown on opposition groups in the country. German motor oil manufacturer Liqui Moly said it would cancel its sponsorship deal if the championship remains in Belarus, a day after carmaker Skoda vowed to do the same after 28 years as a sponsor of the event. The Belarusian capital Minsk and Latvian capital Riga were picked in 2017 as co-hosts for the May 21-June 6 championship. Criticism of Belarus’ involvement has grown since a disputed presidential election last year was followed by mass arrests at largely peaceful demonstra- tions. Fasel met with longtime Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk on Monday, saying he wanted to use the tournament to build bridges between Lukashenko and the opposition. However, opposition groups criticized Fasel after he was pictured embracing Lukashenko. Fasel said the gesture didn’t mean the IIHF was taking sides in Belarusian politics. The Danish city of Herning, which hosted part of the 2018 championship, is a possible replacement for Minsk, Fasel said, and there have been initial talks with 2019 host nation Slovakia. Latvia could also host on its own, he added. Speaking before the announcements from Liqui Moly and Skoda, Fasel said the IIHF was “financially solid” despite having to cancel last year’s world championship in Switzerland because of the coronavirus pandemic. . Fighter Open To Return Friday night in Abu Dhabi that was co-promoted by Nurmagomedov’s new Eagle FC organization. In Octo- ber, Nurmagomedov surprisingly announced his retirement after a second-round submission win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. Leading into that bout, Nurmagomedov was grieving over the death of his father last summer due to complications from COVID-19. Nurmagomedov’s father, Abdulmanap, was also his head coach and closest confidant. Nurmagomedov (29- 0) is ESPN’s top-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The native of Dagestan, an autonomous republic of Russia, has won all 13 of his UFC fights, a record for most consecutive UFC lightweight victories.
