2016 Director of the University of Indianapolis Human Identification Center (H.I.C). Duties

include: leading the forensic outreach program, which consists of three laboratories: the Forensic

DNA Laboratory (for analysis of DNA samples), the Osteology Laboratory (for curation &

analysis of dry skeletal materials & related specimens) and the Processing Laboratory (for wet

maceration & cleaning of human & animal remains), supervising graduate assistants,

maintaining the budget, setting and monitoring safety and security policies and procedures for all

H.I.C. activities and facilities, establishing standard operating protocols, maintaining OSHA

standards, organizing safety training sessions, maintaining required documentation, engaging in

public outreach and education regarding forensic science, and to conduct human remains training

workshops for medicolegal personnel, as requested.

Forensic DNA Laboratory duties include: conducting research focusing on population genetics, transfer DNA and optimization of skeletal DNA extraction, supervising student

research projects, consulting on human genetic variation and statistical interpretation of population genetics data for state and federal agencies around the country, consulting on issues of human genetic identification for medical examiners, coroners, police and state agencies throughout the country, author of submitted technical reports, and testimony or deposition as an expert witness in Federal courts.

Osteology Laboratory & Processing Laboratory duties include: the excavation and analysis of

skeletal remains from forensic and archeological contexts, supervising student research projects,

consulting on human remains cases for medical examiners, coroners, police and state agencies

throughout the country, author or co-author of submitted technical reports, and testimony or

deposition as an expert witness in State and Federal courts.

RESEARCH INTERESTS & AREAS OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

1. Human Genetic Variation: involves the investigation and understanding of human genetic variation

within and between human populations.

2. Human Identification: involves the positive identification of unidentified human remains.

3. Forensic Osteology: involves the reconstruction and analysis of human skeletal remains from recent

medicolegal cases to reconstruct the decedent’s living characteristics (sex, ancestry, age at death, stature,

identifying features) and identify circumstances of death.

4. Forensic Archeology: involves the controlled excavation, recovery and mapping of human remains and

associated evidence from burial or surface contexts.
