Swedish Government! The Swedish Government is run by a King and Queen. But their type of government is a Constitutional Monarery. This means that the King and Queen share power with the other elected leaders of Sweden. Sweden had a new constitution made in 1974.

INDUSTRY In Sweden, 71% of all Swedes are employed. Sweden is actually one of the most successful economies in the world! Some important natural resources are silver, lead, zinc, iron ore, and copper. Timber exports (mostly for paper products) are also used a lot. Not having very much fossil fuels, which is imported, Sweden d e p e n d s o n n u c l e a r a n d hydroelectric power for 90% of its energy uses.

IMPORTS AND EXPORTS One in four households don't have a car! Lots of people are

now using trains, subways, and street cars. Almost all of the roads are paved and there are only three international airports. They rely and always use cellphones every day. They have TV and have one of the fastest internets in the world because they have a high density of web servers.

MONEY SYSTEM In Sweden, 9.65 Krona would equal one US dollar. This means that if you wanted to buy a Lamborghini, you would need 965,000 Krona! Salaries are very high but so is living.

CULTURE!

Religion Sweden is a highly secular society and they have the freedom of religion. About 87% of all Swedes attend the Evangelical Lutheran Church but most people don’t attend church services often. Traditions & Celebration1st Swedes Celebrate New Year’s Day which is May first, National Day which is June sixth, and Påsk other wise known as Easter which is celebrated over several days. It starts on Skärtorsdagen. That is the day before good Friday.

Food Swedes eat a small breakfast at around 7:00AM then have something small midday.

Traditionally, middag was the main meal which was served at midday. Most urban people eat light lunches then have their main meal at around 6:00PM.

Traditional Clothing In Sweden, everybody knows the newest trend and are normally the first to get the

new trend. They always wear warm clothes because it is cold out there. It is important to be clean and neat in public. They also wear traditional clothing a lot.

THE PEOPLE OF SWEDEN

Sports of Sweden There are many indoor and outdoor sports played in Sweden. Some of the winter sports include of skiing, hockey, snowboarding, cross country skiing, ice fishing and hunting. There are many skiing and snowboarding resorts in Sweden. Some of the summer and spring sports are sailing, tennis and soccer. Many familys on the weekends go out to the country for some family fun that includes hiking, canoeing and camping. Swedish keep active all year round!

Education Children ages 7-15 go to school in Sweden. The literacy rate in Sweden is 99%. That means 99% of Sweden’s population can read and write. There are six universities in Sweden to this day. Fourth through seventh graders take English as a second language. Most schools in Sweden are kindergarden through ninth grade. The word school in Sweden is called

Grundskola. Schools there are a little different from our schools here. For the most part kids there study what we study here. It would be exciting to be able to go to school in Sweden for a couple of days.

Family and LifeLife in Sweden is fun! The life expectancy of woman in Sweden is 83.1 percent. The life expectancy of men in Sweden is 78.5 percent. Many people that live in Sweden address each other by their first names. When in a formal situation they use titles. Many families own Summer Cottages. In Sweden each employe is required to have 25 days off.

When they have their days off, the whole family goes to their summer cottage. While their they go camping and boating. If one family does not own a boat they share boats with family friends. In Sweden family’s are a big deal. They take time for one another!!!

Entertainment

Many young kids are involved in some sort

young people to get up on the stage and sing,

dance or play an instrument.

THE HISTORY OF SWEDEN

Wars and Conflicts Sweden was founded 1523.

Gustavus Vasa was the one who found Sweden. In Sweden there were lots of conflicts with the vikings. The vikings use to go to other villages and take valuables. Sometimes they would even take people to be their slaves. Sweden was involved in the Napolenic war. On June 6, 1823. In war they lost Finland, and gained Norway. Sweden had remind at peace. Sweden stayed out of World War I and World War II.

Land MarksThe Drottngholm castle is over

300 years old! To this day the royal family owns the castle. Gotland is an island in Sweden. It is 78 miles long and 32 miles wide. There are many little islands scattered around Sweden. Most of them you have to take a boat to get there. Many say that Gotland is a marvels place to watch the sun set. Oresund is the bridge that connects Sweden to Europe. Sweden has many great land marks.

Legends and AncestryIn 1364-1389 a German king

ruled Sweden. A very popular legend is the one about Gotland. Many people believe that Gotland rises every evening and sinks every morning. They believe this because it is very hard to see Gotland from other island around. It is also believed that the Gotland people live under water. There is some weird legends going around Sweden.

Famous Historical Leaders

Carl Linnaeus is a famous scientist in

Sweden. Ingmar Belman was a very famous

filmmaker. Who is known all over the world. Who

was originally from Sweden. Gustav III was

once the king of Sweden. Astrid Lindgren

is extremely famous here and in Sweden.

She has written a book called Pippi Long-

stockings. She has also written more little kids

books.

A Look At Sweden’s Geography

Sweden is covered in vast green forests, glacier topped mountains, wild rivers, and beautiful coastlines. Their fjords are sparkling. ! The size of Sweden is 932 miles north to south, and 250 miles east to west. The size of Sweden is about the same size as California! " Sweden is a land full of water. Their rocky coastline is 4,724 miles long! They have 90,000 lakes. Their largest lake is Lake Vanern located in the southern lowlands. In fact it’s the largest lake in Europe! Lake Vanern is 2,156 square miles! Also, Their longest river, Torne, withe the Morconio river, flows 354 miles on the border of Finland. All these waterways are good because they use them to travel.! Sweden has 3 regions. there is the Norland, the largest, is located in the north, lowland, a region of beechwood forests and farmland, and Gotaland, a region with rocky Smaland highlands. Sweden is bordered by Norway, Finland, Gulf of Bothina, and the Baltic Sea." Sweden’s temperatures have a big range. In July, temperatures rise to 63 degrees F, and in the winter temperatures can drop to -45 degrees! BRRRRR! No wonder it is so cold, 15% are the country is on the Arctic Circle!

Sweden is home to the famous ice hotel! This hotel is built and rebuilt each year.

Fall eel parties in sweden are when the skies grow dark and the eels don’t see the fishermen’s nets and the fishermen catch a lot of eels!
