SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
“The main purpose of education should be to impart a culture of the heart, a culture based on spiritual values.” -Amma
Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru was one of the remote
centers for hosting a two week ISTE workshop on “Basic Electronics” conducted
from 28th June to 8th July 2011. Department of ECE took the responsibility, and
executed it successfully with technical assistance from ICTS group and the support
from facility department.
Around 19 faculty from various engineering colleges of Bengaluru and
10 from ASE, Bengaluru attended the workshop. Lectures were beamed across the
country through internet using A-View software. The objective of the workshop
was to train the teachers on effective teaching methodology for Basic Electronics.
The experts also identified the concepts that need to be highlighted while
teaching. The workshop also included quizzes conducted by IIT Bombay for the
participants. There were interactive sessions with the faculty of IIT Bombay. CPLD
kits that were used to conduct various experiments in the lab during the workshop
were supplied by IIT Bombay. The workshop was executed under the guidance of
the Co-Coordinator Mr. Giriraja C. V., teaching support provided by Mr. Ganapathi
Hegde, Mr. Karthikeyan and Ms. Sankari, and with technical assistance extended
by lab instructors Mr. Narendranath, Mr. Shinith E. T. and Mr. Jagadeesha.

Orientation Programme for B.Tech. First Year Students
B.Tech. 2011 batch took their first step into Amrita School of
Engineering on 27th July 2011, and the occasion was marked by a grand
orientation ceremony. The event began with a video clip depicting Amma’s
charitable activities and her selfless service to mankind. Dr. K. Shreekrishna Kumar,
Director, AICTE, South-West Region was the Chief Guest of the inaugural function,
and dignitaries on the dais included Poojya Swami Amritageetananda Puri;
Correspondent, Br. Dhanraj Swami; Dean Academics, Dr. B. N. Nagaraj; and
Associate Dean, Dr. Rakesh S. G.
Br. Dhanraj Swami welcomed the gathering and introduced the Chief
Guest. Dr. K. Shreekrishna Kumar addressed the gathering wherein he praised the
University’s academic excellence and its flawless image in the educational
endeavor. Associate Dean assured the freshers of a ragging-free campus, and
administered the oath. The Chief Guest was felicitated by Poojya Swami
Amritageeanda Puri.
In the afternoon session, the students were oriented on various
aspects of the institute. Ms. Suja P., Academic Coordinator, explained the
academic system with its rules and regulations. Mr. Balakrishnan, Head of the
Corporate and International Relations Cell, took the young aspirants through the
tremendous job opportunities enjoyed by Amrita students. He also spoke about
the various training sessions conducted for preparing the students for the campus
interviews. Mr. K. K. Suresh Kumar, the Chief Librarian, spoke about the various
features and facilities offered by the Amrita library. The students were also briefed
about the hostel facilities and the code of conduct by the Chief Warden, Dr. G. N.
Kumaraswamy.

Ms. Jyotsna G. S., Chair, Amritadhara, introduced the students’
Activities Council and its activities to the students. The President of Amritadhara,
Ms. Nandini Mathan spoke to the freshers about the multifarious opportunities of
participating in both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The orientation
programme ended on a warm note, with a video showing various activities
conducted by the college.

National Seminar on Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery of Medical Data
A national seminar on “Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in
Medical Data” was held at Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru Campus on
the 28th and 29th of July. The seminar was organised by the Department of
Computer Science and Engineering, and was sponsored by the Indian Medical
Council. The seminar sought to broaden the understanding of the role of data
mining in the medical field. The seminar was attended by over 70 participants
which included faculty and students from different states and colleges.
The key note address for the inaugural ceremony was delivered by
the Dr. P. S. Jaganathan, Director of PG Studies, PSNA College of Engineering,
wherein he spoke about the relevance of data mining, and its potentials in the
field of medical data.
On the first day, presentations were made on various research areas
in the field of data mining by eminent academicians of Bengaluru. Dr. Shirish K.
Shevade, Associate Professor, IISc Bengaluru spoke on “Machine Learning
Algorithms in Medical Applications”; Dr. P. Jaganathan from PSNA College of
Engineering spoke on “Data Mining in Medical Domain” and Dr. A. Srinivas, HOD,
Dept. of ECE, PESIT Bengaluru spoke on “Data Mining Techniques for Predicting
Cardiovascular Diseases”.
The second day began with a lecture on “XML Data Mining on
Medical Records” by Dr. K. G. Srinivasa from MSRIT, Bengaluru. The next speaker
was Ms. Pushpita Roy Pushilal, Project Data Manager, Ecron Acunova , who spoke
on “Data Mining in the Pharmaceutical Industry”.

The afternoon session had a lecture delivered by Dr. Deepa Gupta
from Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru, on “The Role of Natural Language
Processing in Electronic Health Domain”. Professor S. Nandagopalan from
Bengaluru Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, spoke on “Echo Cardio-graphic
Image Analysis”. A lecture on “Data Mining and its Applications in Neuro
Degenerative Disorders with a special reference to Alzheimers Disease” was
delivered by Ms. P. Sandhya Joshi from Amrita School of Arts and Sciences,
Mysore.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. B. Uma
Maheswari from the CSE department and presentation of certificates to the
participants by Dr. T. S. B. Sudarshan, Chair – CSE.

and Re-Tooling session conducted by Cisco Academy on 29th July 2011 at
Coimbatore.
Anirudh M. Mavilakandi, Suarabh Rai and Pavan Kashyap, CCNA qualified
students of 2011 batch, got placed in Cisco Systems.
Mr. Praveen D. has joined Department of Physics. He was
employed with ASE Bangalore in the year 2008-2009 and
took a break to pursue research in Bangalore University.
His areas of interest are Ionically Conducting System,
Batteries, and Active Galactic Nucleus.
DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
Dr. Shastry has joined the Department as Professor
Emeritus. Prior to joining Bangalore campus, he was
Professor Emeritus and Chairman at Ettimadai campus
from 2003 to 2011. He also worked at North Eastern Hill
University from 1985 to 2003 and BITS Pilani from 1971 to
1985. His area of specialization is Theoretical Nuclear
Physics.

Placement News
Four students from Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru have
been placed in Mu Sigma and Microsoft. Two students who got placed in Mu
Sigma are Sidhartha Mani of CSE VII Sem and Udaya Shravan Kumar of ECE VII
Sem. Aditya Sriram and Rohan Prabhu of CSE VII Sem have been selected by
Microsoft. These students were last year’s interns in the company.
Accenture Technical Training Program
165 students from CSE, ECE and EEE underwent 17 days of rigorous
hands-on-training delivered by project managers of Accenture. This training has
considerably strengthened the students for the upcoming placement season.
New Appointment for CIR team
Bangalore CIR team has been strengthened by the addition of
Mr. Sureshkumar who will play the role of Placement Manager for engineering
disciplines.
Initiation of Credit System in Learning & Development
The University has made the placement training a credit course from
the academic year 2011. CIR training delivery team has commenced the delivery
of credit course for the III semester in Aptitude and English Communication.
Students will be assessed from the 4th semester onwards.
