A Clear Business Case
• Beat Customer expectations with everything we do
• Enterprise class – Must scale with business growth non-disruptively
• Improved and predictable recovery solution
• Automated onboarding of workloads to product
• Solution to eliminate or effectively minimize source workload contention
The Partner Selection was Critical
8
Journey from replicating a few individual workloads on a Flatbed Truck…….
9
… to replicating all workloads as 6,000 finely tuned Ferraris!
10
Ferraris for everybody sounds great….
QUESTIONS TO ASK
• Ensure our “highways” are big enough for our workload peaks
• Safely onboard existing production workloads?
• Test our recovery plan’s ability to meet the stated RPO/RTO requirements?
11
First…let’s lay the groundwork for discussion…
12
Hosting Environment Overview
• What were we required to protect?
• SOME quick numbers…
• Quick Facts
• 100% vSphere – 5.5u3 / 6.0u2
• +760 ESXi hosts (rack/blade mixture)
• 27 HP 3PAR arrays (P7400/P8400)
• +5,700 Virtual Machines
• 2.3 Petabytes Thick Provisioned VMDK under Zerto protection
13
1. Infrastructure Highways
RPO within seconds as long as the following infrastructure components can accommodate peak write IOPS:
Network
Storage
Compute

3. Host level?
2. Chassis/TOR?

Highways – Storage Utilization
Utilization : How much space is needed at the DR site?
• Determine your journal history requirements
• Back of the napkin math to include Journal/Scratch:
REQ = (# of protected workloads * 60 GB) * 2 +
(thin provisioned storage utilization of source array)
16
Performance: How much performance is required at the DR site?
FOLLOW THAT IO…
Highways – Storage Performance
17
Highways – Compute
• VRAs
• Doubled vRAM (3GB -> 6GB)
• Doubled vCPU (1 vCPU -> 2 vCPU)
• ZVM (recovery side)
• vCPU = 8
• vRAM = 16GB
• vCenter (recovery side)
• vCPU = 8
• vRAM = 24GB

2. Onboarding Workloads
19
REST APIs… hooray 4.5u3!
Onboarding - Consistency
20
Zerto doesn’t touch your source array, except for…
• Init Syncs
• Delta Syncs
Onboarding – Contention
21
Cluster 4
16 hosts / VRAs
Cluster 3
16 hosts / VRAs
Cluster 2
16 hosts / VRAs
Cluster 1
16 hosts / VRAs• VRA built in throttling is very
effective
• Take a metered approach aligning with storage capability
16 x 72 IOPS = 1152 Read IOPS
16 x 72 IOPS = 1152 Read IOPS
16 x 72 IOPS = 1152 Read IOPS
16 x 72 IOPS = 1152 Read IOPS
Onboarding - Contention
22
3. RPO/RTO - Implementation Test
• Product has been implemented to stated design, all workloads onboarded
• All customers are under protection and showing sub 60 second RPOs
• But…. what happens in that “nuclear” moment?
23
Implementation Test
• Project conclusion was a full POD test
• Consisted of roughly 1000 VMs, 375 VPGs
• Test run multiple (dozen or so) times to gain confidence in RTO timing, RPO story
24
25
Wrap-Up
•Best Vendor Decision
•The Product “Just Works”
• Implementation – A Full Partnership
•Product Support – Phenomenal
