PART A

Overview: In this lesson, a balancing scale is used as a metaphor for friendship, to help children understand how to achieve a positive relationship with their peers.

Duration: 1 Hour

Resources required: • Balance Scales (one per table) • Box of various materials for weighing (one per table) • ‘Weights of friendship’ Worksheet [Appendix 1] (one per child) • Writing pencils/ pens

Learning Objective: To develop an understanding of the different attributes involved in friendship and understand how to embrace difference. Gaining a sense of balanced relationships by recognising the different qualities we all hold.

Lesson Section A: Understanding balance and friendship

Class room preparation: Place a set of balancing scales and a box of weighing materials on each of the class tables.

Step by Step:

1. Begin the lesson by highlighting to the children that the subject of our work is going to be ‘friendship’. As a class, create a mind-map on the board, giving the class an opportunity to share what they consider friendship to be, taking their contributions to add to the mind-map.

2. Explain to the class that in order for a friendship to be a positive one it must be balanced, fair and equal. Draw the children's attention to the balance sales and materials in the centre of each of their tables. Set the children the task of testing and experimenting how they can make the scales balance with the different materials.

This activity is great for visual learners! It gives them a mental image of balance to refer back to as the lesson progresses.

3. Clear away the scales and materials and explain to the class that there is space for lots of different qualities in a friendship, like the different materials we just used. But if there is too much of one thing, things can become unbalanced, as we saw with our scales. Give each child a copy of the ‘Weights of friendship’ worksheet (Appendix 1), asking them to write key words in each of the weights, highlighting qualities that may need balancing in friendship. E.g If there was too much or too little of these attributes the friendship would be unfair and people may be unhappy, such as anger. Once this has been completed have the children share their ideas with one another.

Class room preparation: Push the tables to the side of the room and have the children sit on their chairs in a large circle.

Step by Step: 1. Begin a class discussion by highlight to the children that the material we used on the scales to find balance

were not the same, they were all different. We also managed to find balance with different materials on each side of the scales, they didn’t have to be the same colour or texture for them to balance. Ask the children to make contributions as to why this may be like friendship.

E.g. People being different from each other does not stop them being friends, in fact it is a great thing as we can learn from one another!

2. Drama game ‘Anyone who…’: Staying in a circle, remove one one chair, this person stands in the middle and takes on the role of ‘The caller’. They call out “Anyone Who…" completing the sentence e.g. has red socks / likes pizza / has 3 older brothers etc. which has to be true for them also. If the statement is true for anyone else in the circle, those children move out of their chair and find another one as quickly as they can, as well as ‘The Caller’. The last person left goes in the middle and becomes the next caller.

This game allows the children to explore ways in which they may be similar or different from one another in a fun and relaxed manner.

3. Music game ‘Rhythm Orchestra’ - Split the children in the circle into 4 different groups. Then the teacher as the role of ‘The Conductor’ teaches each each group a their own, simple body percussion rhythm . This could include clapping, stamping or tapping on different body parts. (The important thing for The Conductor to remember, is all the rhythms need to work to the same beat, so they can come together successfully) Once all groups know their rhythm, the conductor starts each of the groups performing their rhythms repeatedly, until all groups are performing at the same time and a part of the orchestra, all in time with one another. - Why not try this activity with percussion instruments, such as maracas, drums or bells!

This game highlights that although we are all different as individuals we can still all come together positively as a group.

4. Bring the class together to debrief through a discussion all we have learnt today about friendship.

PART B

Overview: This lesson encourages the class to identify and celebrate their similarities and difference, to come together in a positive manner.

Duration: 30-45 min

Resources required: • Percussion instruments (optional)

Learning Objective: To develop an understanding of the different attributes involved in friendship and understand how to embrace difference. Gaining a sense of balanced relationships by recognising the different qualities we all hold.

Lesson Section B: Celebrating our similarities and differences

Display idea: Take photos of the children during the music and drama activities and place on a display board. Then invite the children to complete the thought bubbles [Appendix 2] during your lesson debrief, to highlight all they have learnt about friendship and place along side the photos.

Having this present within the class room, can act as a continually reference point for positive friendships and celebrating our differences.
